Batman fights a lot of supervillains and bad guys with weird hang-ups and gimmickry, but stories like this help remind the audience that Batman isn't just about punching criminals. His highest ideal is that of justice. Not revenge, or vengeance, or imprisonment. He wants to make the world a better place.

One of the great things about this series was how much time they spent on all the villains not just the big 4 that were well known. They established depth and backgrounds for all of them.
@paulwt97832 жыл бұрын
Batman doesn't have any big 4 who everyone knows, he has a very large well known rogues gallery, in a close contest w Spider-Man and the X-Men for best in comics.
@paulwt97832 жыл бұрын
But that said your actual point is correct. One of the reasons this is the definitive Bat is that it isn't just the all-star enemies or even supervillains in general, they include a ton of underworld and crime stories and build up the entire cast of Gotham criminals. And they mix the costumed and the uncostumed criminals perfectly into the world, wo sacrificing (as Chris Nolan did) the comic book qualities of the costumed villains. They give an internally plausible and consistent story world where all these kinds of villains can co-exist and even interact and play big parts in each other's stories. Nolan had to make his costumed villains overly 'realistic' to do this. Burton, the non-costumed villains were too unrealistic. Only this show (and some runs of the comics) get it all perfect.

@@paulwt9783 at the time of the shows first airing in the 90’s the average person still only knew of the Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman because the 1960’s Batman show was still for the average casual person the definitive version of Batman. Very few people knew of Mr Freeze, Bane, Scarecrow, Ra's al Ghul, Clay Face, Two-Face, Man Bat, Ventriloquist/Scarface ect outside of a few hardcore comic book readers, those villains just weren’t as famous because of that. The animated series gave just as much love to them as the big four from the 1960’s and made the other versions household names in pop culture for the average person. I was 21 when the 92 series first aired and it was huge, beating out Oprah in the ratings at times.
@paulwt97832 жыл бұрын
@@noirgatherer i remember how big it was, you are mischaracterizing the notoriety of various characters tho. Harvey Dent was literally the DA in Tim Burton's Batman, and was likely planned on becoming Two-Face had he stuck w the series. As it was they had Two-Face and Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy and Bane all as villains in 90s Batman movies. the 'average person' doesn't know any comic book character until/unless that character appears in mass media such as tv or film. that isn't really relevant. the characters you name were not obscure to comic book readers. this would be like claiming Galactus isn't generally well known or a major villain, bc he's never really appeared onscreen yet. the comics are not just the original medium, they are a major medium. they didn't used to be minor subsidiary obscure source material but major media unto themselves. The Batman movie of Burton wasn't a big phenomena bc people remembered the campy tv show from the 60s, but bc they had been reading the comics for 50 years. and Bane btw is a particularly bad example bc he was barely in the cartoon and only grudgingly. his fame was entirely comic book based. the comics were big deals.
@noirgatherer2 жыл бұрын
@@paulwt9783 your missing my point. I was talking about being famous pop icons that were well known outside of the fandom. Many of the villains like scare crow and clay face were in cartoons as far back as the 70’s but never rose to the level of fame as the big 4 had. the average non superhero fan wouldn’t know much about Manbat but would know who the Joker was in the same way they would know who Andy Warhol or Groucho Marx was. I was talking cultural fame. The animated series rose the others to that level. It made Mr Freeze a beloved villain when he had just been a two dimensional gimmick before.

Thorne is actually a fairly well-known Batman enemy. He’s been around since the seventies in the comics. But yeah, I guess he’s not a supervillain though. By the way, most Batman episodes aren’t filler. “Moon of the Wolf” and “Prophecy of Doom” might be an exception to that rule, but mostly they all have some bit of gold nuggets in each episode. Also, just because they don’t have well known villains don’t make them bad, “Beware the Gray Ghost” is one of the best.

I think in pre Crisis comics Thorne tried to kill Hugo Strange but Strange survived and used his knowledge of psychology to drive Thorne insane by making him think Strange's vengeful ghost was haunting him.
