It has a one-piece satin maple neck with a skunk stripe and 22 frets, AlNiCo V pickups, a full-sized basswood body, and a two-point trem with satin block steel saddles. The fretboard dimensions are the same as a Player Series. It’s a better guitar that cost less than half of what a new Standard goes for. So yeah, the F-word on the headstock doesn’t make it better.

It also reminds of my Players, as both have a modern C profiles. But they're not the same. I have 2 Affinities right here and have had Squiers for years. Including on the channel. This has a wider neck, wider nut, wider string spacing, MIM electronics & tuners. The Poplar and Laurel is why it's the price it is, knowing it leaves room to "update" it later. Everyone knows this is $100 too high and testing the field. They're a business. I think they saw a $ gap between the CV & Player line they filled it. Without threatening sales of CVs or Players.

Hear me out: Ben is correct - this is not a Squier. They are not worthy of carrying the Squier name. Because I own 2 Squier Standard Series Stratocasters, I can attest to the facts that: The Squier has 22 frets. This Fender has 21. i.e.: not a Squier! The Squier has an Alder body. This fender has Poplar. i.e.: not a Squier! The Squier has a Rosewood fretboard. This Fender uses Laurel. i.e.: not a Squier! The Squier has AlNiCo pickups. This Fender has ceramics. i.e.: not a Squier! Does anyone see a pattern forming? These new Fenders fail to live up to the "Standard" that has been set by Indonesian Squier Standards - 20 years ago! So, being a downgrade of an old import guitar seems to be what the mighty Fender has been reduced to. What. a. crime.

If you want the Fender locking tuners, the P2 tuners are double pinned, just like the MIM standards. You can easily change them out. Drop in replacement. And the Alnico 5’s sound pretty good. No need to change them, unless you’re simply looking for a different sound. I bought both of mine on sale, for $649 each, from Guitar Center. They’re completely gig worthy and play great. Fender has realized their Standard Series, which evolved into the Player Series, was indeed a " standard" from which they shouldn't have deviated. This is merely bringing back what once was. Simple. Older players remember being able to score a MIM Standard Strat/Tele around the $500 price point for many years. It's a vicious cycle for corporate bean counters to always crave profits; this is the result. I remember comparing a new Player Strat to a new Standard Strat. Side by side. The biggest difference was the new Alnico pups vs the magnetic pups. Alnicos were brighter, thinner sounding. Magnetic were more mid-focused, fuller sounding. It's a big difference & a personal preference. Owning both would give you 2 distinctive classic Strat tones.

Of course it doesn’t guarantee that they aren’t - but it makes no sense to me that Fender wouldn’t have put good sounding pickups in this guitar. The cheap selector switch, cheap pots, (even if they are bigger, they are still the cheap ones, I buy bags of alpha pots for $1.70 each retail, CTS does not even make any for that price point.) It even has the flimsy cord jack, the one people pay me to replace with a quality Switchcraft jack. The pickups with the magnets glued to the bottom, etc. I am not there to feel the neck, so that is your call. 1mm wider string spacing is just a measurement programmed into the equipment, not quality.. I buy those saddles as replacements, they are the same price per bag for either string spacing. Routing is just a program, not a quality. I have a Squier Classic Vibe that the neck feels every bit as good as my Fender FRS guitar. I look at everything from a manufacturing point of view. Objectively speaking, what's different between this and a Squire?
@benpowersguitar4 күн бұрын
As shown in the video, every part is different. The wider neck, nut & string spacing is something you only get on higher end Fenders. Squier & Player Series don't have that.
@ByGraceThroughFaith7774 күн бұрын
@benpowersguitar I understand, but I have an Indonesian Bullet that has a 42mm nut too. It says Backed by Fender, Crafted in Indonesia. Aren't these new Fenders the same guitars quality wise as the spec'd out Squires? I believe they are. So if they want to charge 200 more for a logo and rebranding, that's fine, but they aren't any different than the top Squires. They know some people will pay that premium. The tooling for a thicker poplar body is just a setting in the CNC machine, the same goes for the metal parts. They can tweak the design and the packaging a bit and slap the fender logo and nobody would know that they bought the same quality guitar as a 200 cheaper Squire that doesn't say Fender. In my opinion, the move is to replace the Vibes for these Standards and sell more guitars that say Fender on them, and keep the 250 affinity series as the top Squier, because people were adopting the highend Squiers as amazing value guitars that they are, and skipping the player series entirely. It's a sleek move, but for now, at least for me, there's no reason to pay more for the same.
@benpowersguitar4 күн бұрын
@@ByGraceThroughFaith777 The nut width is wider on this than your Affinity. You have 1.650. These, like higher end Fenders, have 1.685. Which allows for the wider string spacing. Which is why this has a new bridge, with wider saddles and a harder material. It's why the neck is also wider and has a modern C profile. The electronics are similar to the newer CV and exact to the old MIM, full size alpha pots, mechanical switch with the MIM/ceramic pups. The finish on the neck is steps above Squier. The woods may be from the same source. I don't know. I know Fender has a problem at least through the Player line with seams showing through the finish. I have assumed for a while that the issue is they're are saving money by not drying the wood as well or using a cheaper adhesive. They're a business. I think they saw a $ gap between the CV & Player line and they filled it in a way that won't hurt the CV or Player lines.

@ In one NAMM video a guy was talking to a Fender rep and he said that Fender has been working on this line for two years. I don't think the possibility of tariffs played a part in this. I kinda think Fender wants to create a ladder a guitarist can climb of Fender equip. You get tired of your Squier, you can step up to the next rung to an Indonesian Fender if you can't afford MIM or MIJ, eventually working your way up to an American build. Kinda like Apple, they want to get their hooks in you and keep you buying their products. I know they're taking some hits in the comments, but I give credit to Fender, in the last year they started selling the ultra low end Squier Debuts on Amazon for $119 and now a budget Indonesian Fender for $599. If the standard had the same specs as the MIM standard, like wood types, finish, skunk stripe, and logo. I feel like this is just a cheap copy of the MIM standard. And they should have just made these in mexico. Thats what makes them more special, in comparison to made in oversea guitars.
