I just can’t pick up a 24 fret guitar and play it like it’s second nature like I can with a 21 or 22 fret guitar. Not sure why, but I just can’t. Especially Jackson’s. I generally don’t rely on fret markers. I think I may use the double dot 12th markers subconsciously. I don’t mean to if I do. Those Jackson fret markers really throw me off though. But on 24 fret guitars I’m always screwing up when I get above the 18th fret area. I never have any problems with 21 0r 22 fret guitars. I’ve never owned a 24 fret before, so maybe that’s the reason.
@benpowersguitar

I can see that. I have known other players that have issues switching to a guitar with 24 frets. Just like I know players that aren't comfortable playing anything under 25.5 scale length. We're guitarists. We're odd people, but we're great :)

Thanks for this. I recently bought a 5150 amp top and felt like I could use a more 'metal style' guitar. My Gibson Flying V, Explorer and various Epiphones (V, SG, LP etc) , are already good for metal but I feel these go better with my Marshall amp. So I considered buying a Jackson Dinky (the JS32Q), having played one years ago, and went looking for reviews. When I saw this vid I realized I still had an Ibanez Gio with Floyd Rose, the GRG270B. I picked it up at a pawn shop years ago, it was in poor condition, so I paid almost nothing. I fixed it up a bit, it needed some TLC and a couple of bucks worth in parts, and it is a great guitar again. When looking for Dinky reviews I found your video and it reminded me I still had the Ibanez. Gonna try that first (it needs a proper set up, haven't played it in ages) and see how that works out. Maybe I will stumble upon a Jackson one of these days, if so I will definitely buy it. Or would you still recommend getting a Jackson JS32 with high output humbuckers and Floyd Rose style trem for metal stuff?
@benpowersguitar
@benpowersguitar 21 сағат бұрын
I personally prefer the Ibanez RG450/470 series. Mainly the neck. The JS32 will do fine though. Also, Jackson has the dk2xr and dk2xr, which used can be a great deal. Trying the old Ibanez first is definitely the way to go.

@@benpowersguitar OK thanks, will do, my main concern is that the Ibanez Gio pick ups sounded a bit muddy at higher gain, from what I remember. Gotta put some new strings on first anyway though, then I'll see what happens. It's a bugger we don't have any decent brick and mortar shops anymore where I live, or I could just walk in and try a couple of guitars. The only one in my area has moved away years ago and mainly sells custom shop Fenders and brands that noone ever heard of, preferably with lots of switches, weird looking shapes and reliced to bits for like 5k or more. All hail the 'new age' 🤣😂

@@peter333 Yeah, some of the Ibanez models pups aren't my favorites. For that reason. Not having a decent store, at least a GC around, makes it hard to really tell anything. Another one you may want to consider is from GuitarFetish. SBS SS260. They have a 20" radius, roasted flame maple necks, Floyd Rose and are pretty nice. I have one here, but won't be putting up the vid until next year.

But strangely I get used to the sound of what I have. I switched the pups on the CV 60s to player series ...I may actually go back to the mighty might ceramics it came with modded when I got it. They had punch. Then put the player series in the black strat. ..I need to find out if my black strat got truss rod nut stripped by my son in law. I love them. More of a Hendrix than SRV vibe. I use strats mainly for SRV, Hendrix & Clapton tones. So I am usually going for more of that '59-'65 sound. These, PV '59, PV '61, '57/'62 & Texas Specials are some of my favorites. All are great through a cranked tube amp. Man, hope the necks ok on the black strat. It's been around forever. I currently have a CV '60s, I love the pups in it. The Player pups are great all around pickups, but certain tones are hard to get out of them because of that. Even with my tube amp cranked, they just don't quite get there. Great pups, I didn't change the ones in my Surf Pearl Player strat.

If you don't have a guitar. And you want out of box vintage setup. The player II. If you don't care. or your going to upgrade the thing anyways with like Fender Locking Tuners (Player I is presetup so you can jsut drop them in) Player I. I think it was a bit of a mistake to call it a player II... It's really a Player I Vintage Classic. IMHO. Why I don't like about Player I vs Player II.. Is that it's a setup difference. Really. They're over marketing preferences as improvements. Which they're potentially not. The vintage tuners.. Hate those... Id have to re drill them and resize the wholes to put in my fender locking tuners I like.. Pain in the ass. Player I.. Is pre drilled for a no brainer drop in of those fender locking tuners. What I don't like about the name Player I vs Player II.. Is it suggests Player II is an upgrade. Well IMHO it's just a setup difference. Player I is for more modern tastes. Player II is for a guy chasing vintage. I don't like the name because it attempts to invalidate a perfectly great mid tier guitar.. The player I.

@benpowersguitar
@benpowersguitar 9 күн бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. Short answer, same neck profile. What I stated, was the Player Series was actually on it's second incarnation before the Player II, as some of the original Player had more of a deep c, at least the couple I played. All Standard Player Series strats have the modern c, which was carried over to the Player II. The only difference in the neck is the rolled edges and the option for rosewood over pau ferro. Heck the only other difference in the guitar is swapping for the vintage style tuners.

I guess I might stick to my current strat, that is actually some "weird" edition of Squier Classic Vibe from 2013 - proper alder body, quarter sawn neck with very thin laminated rosewood fretboard, sort of early 60-s style fenders would have. 9.5 radius though. I have Duncan SSL-1/ssl-5 combo in it now - sounds killer, feels like a proper strat, set up and playability is better than a couple of mex and usa fenders I had before. If it's your daily player, the rolled edges may make a real difference. I think it really depends on how you feel about that one feature. The rosewood is nice, if you're not looking for maple. It's not suddenly a bad guitar because a newer model comes out. Guitars are not IPads. They don't go out of date. Try actually playing a 1959 Strat.... Thing is hideous to play. Thos guitars are going for $60,000. And yet... buzzing hideous ass thing that vintage gear is.. .It's highly sought after. People in guitar land aren't looking for the latest 2.0.0.. like tech gear. My only 2 complaints about the Player ll series are that the color options are kind of ugly imo with a few exceptions, and the Jaguar is more like a Jaguar lite. Other than that I think they're great. I really like the rolled fretboard edges. I did hear somewhere that they changed the bridge for the Teles, not sure how I feel about that but as long as it's functional and sounds good then it shouldn't be a problem. I always preferred maple fretboards on Fender guitars and basses in general, so I could care less about the upgrade from Pau Ferro to Rosewood, however I've heard a TON of people requested it so it's cool they listened. Personally, if I was planning to buy a 2nd P-bass, then I would consider a darker fretboard just to change things up, but I wouldn't care if it had Rosewood or Pau Ferro.
