I think this is the core truth of Catholicism, and all of Western history, for that matter; in fact, it's the core truth of Darwinism to some degree. The fact you are alive, proves that you are stronger than all that tried to kill you. You can see this core message in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, for example. Both extremely Catholic works, with the general theme being: fight on, even when you think you're going to lose, because you never truly know the future (technically, it's a sin to despair, and to admit defeat is despair, as it implies that you know the future and how things will turn out, but you never do), and you never truly know just how strong you are or could be.

Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam? You want them to pretend like reality doesn't exist? Use of the phrases like these, exemplifying the tu quoque tactic, was an attempt to deflect criticism of the Soviet Union by referring to racial discrimination and lynching in the United States". en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_you_are_lynching_Negroes So person A doesn't have problems because person B has more problems? Again, did you realize this was stupid before you pressed send or after? "if you wanna sit around and blaim the WORLD for YOUR PROBLEMS" [Appeal to motive and framing emotive language]... Just because you value stoicism doesn't make it "good". "wallowing in self pity" You're literally calling the act of talking about your problems "wallowing". Are you serious? Stop victim blaming people for literally having problems. peter jordanson makes no sense in this video and you make even less sense trying to defend what he said. You don't have the right to determine whose issues are valid and who doesn't deserve the right to acknowledge them. You're not the fucking gatekeeper of emotions. And understanding problems is an essential step to dealing with them. This man just told people "it's your fault, now get over it and do better" like as if that is helpful advice.
@CoryMck5 жыл бұрын
@Shawn Camburn "don't be such a pussy, dude." no, u "tell me what good it does to sit around and talk about shit" Communication. Dialogical processing. Receiving input from people with different experiences and viewpoints. Introducing subconscious thoughts to the conscious. Did you know that people actually pay money to SPEAK with psychologists because they helps them solve their problems? You know what doesn't help? Telling people to "get tougher". "but it needs to quickly move past that and into a place..." No, problems don't work like that. There is no "thing" to be done that can undo or end most people's problems. And when they are working on their problems, they are going to continue to talk about them. "you can't control the outside world, so why focus on it" Delusional: characterized by or holding idiosyncratic beliefs or impressions that are contradicted by reality or rational argument. "talk, read, whine..." Don't forget gatekeep. "I don't think that is up for debate" No it's not, because you're already starting with the assumption that acknowledging your problems are "weak". Now that you mention it, next time my friend tells me about their anxiety, I'll just tell them to get over it and stop having anxiety. When my lesbian friend is upset about how her religious parents treat her, I'll just mean over and say "stop talking about it and solve it by divorcing your family and moving to a different state. Problem solved" I wonder how many speeches jordanson has given to poor inner city youths about how they should just "get over their problems by being tough". Unreal. Many problems in life do not have solutions. And most of the other ones are not easily solvable. "the only thing that any of us can truly do in this world is work on improving ourselves and our situation" Ya, if you only care about yourself and think that you can decide what a person's value is, then sure. We don't live in a bubble, and we don't all exist to do whatever it is you're talking about. You: *listens to peter jordanson's nonsense and is convinced on how the world is and how life should be. Also you: "you have zero control over what other people are going to do" ... Okay... do you see how this contradicts?

I was always taught you have to do things right the first time and that there are no second chances. Failure was never seen as something to learn from, but as shameful and proof of inferiority to those who succeed. That there was no reason to bother doing anything when there are others around you who are more talented or more experienced, as they will always be favored. I grew up surrounded by people both at school and at home who drilled this mindset into me day in and day out. It led me to develop crippling depression, a sense of worthlessness, and thoughts of suicide on a monthly basis. Only very recently have I started hearing this kind of mindset. I am clawing tooth and nail to get myself out of this mental hole that I have been put in. It’s so easy to slip back down to the bottom, and it hurts so much to land back into that dark dark place. Each time I get back to climbing however, I go slightly higher than last time. I’m still not out yet, and I have a long way to go. However, I will persevere.

I was watching this anime called Attack On Titan. In a recent episode, there’s a flashback between two characters showing them when they were school children. One of the kids keeps getting bullied, so the other one tells him “they’re just going keep attacking you unless you fight back. Aren’t you tired of losing?” In response, the first kid says “I’m not losing... because I don’t run.” I loved that line. Even if you can’t fight back, even if you’re outnumbered, outclassed, and have no hope of winning (which is absolutely true when we’re pitted against Mother Nature), you can still show up and weather the storm. They can break your body and even your heart, but if they can’t break your spirit, you will never lose. Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning is one of the greatest testaments to the strength of the human spirit, and a great example of the scene above. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms-to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” - Viktor Frankl

I want to chase victories for civilization, regardless of what those victories bring me in return. Coming to grips with reality, what is most important on planet earth, and the fact that what I thought was most important was incorrect, was difficult. I’m 25. I want to work as intelligently and diligently as I can for the remainder of my life for what’s most important. And not be bogged down by the very real negative parts of reality.

In the anime Black Clover, one of the grittiest characters there, Fuegoleon, said "Being weak is okay, staying weak isn't." Staying weak is what makes you a sore loser. Life is already a suffering, no matter how optimistic your view is. Don't make it worse by making yourself vulnerable physically and mentally. And if you're so optimistic about life, you know for sure that you're missing out on so many things.

“It’s not okay to be a loser.” Yes, I agree. But what makes someone a loser? I don’t think chasing wealth, material possessions, or titles like MD and PHD in order to feel better about yourself and better than other people makes you a winner. Doing your own thing on your own terms makes you a winner. Even if it means being broke or financially uncomfortable for a period of time. Blindly following society’s generic script and idea of what success is doesn’t make you a success just because you’re good at it.

In my experience, most things that appear to be "too hard" or "impossible", so you're even afraid to think about it let alone do something, are way more possible if you put all your strength in it. My best example, finding a (good) job: I didn't have much hope, felt desperate, I was afraid to even go to a interview because i feared I will fail. But soon I've managed to get some confidence and strength. I went to my first interview: FAIL, second: FAIL, every time I failed I didn't really feel so bad, this was a shocking discovery :) Yeah, I failed, I know why I failed, improve that part and try again. Few more fails followed, and then BAM, you're HIRED! :D Best day ever. I still work at the same company around 6.5 years now. Amazing what you can do if you accept failure and keep improving. I kept that attitude and life is great, I feel like there is nothing that can stop me. And I was a loser once, think about it.

I have now taken it upon myself to spend a considerable amount of time studying Jordan Peterson and have come to understand much of his work. I've decided I'm not going to do that anymore, I'm going to pursue what makes me happy. I don't care about my community anymore, I care about my happiness.

It feels like a good idea, but then you start looking at life as comparison and competition. We are built as a social species to be strong together. If the worth of life depends on how much you accomplish you have to compare yourself with someone else, so strength is adversarial. I wish there was a way to put this so that we could say let's include everyone in the common effort to build up all our lives. Each one of us will contribute our own talents to the common good.

Yes. It is the first time it is articulated. Everyone around me just told me "responsibility means you pay your own bills and no one else does it for you". Everything else was not important and the only responsibility is that no other person needs to pay your bills. Nobody told me that its a good idea to take responsibility for the well being of others. I disagree. Sure, it might feel good for some people to feel like they are constantly being better and progressing from one goal to the next but in the end I believe that life is wasted that way. You could instead learn to be happy where you are. It obviously depends too, because maybe you are stuck in a hole and actually need to get out of it to be happy. But if you feel happy where you are, theres no need to keep pushing yourself further. Sometimes you will look back at the things you throw away to become "better" and end up feeling depressed because you dont realize how happy you really were before. I learned that the hard way. Please consider that as a warning. Dont listen to this video if you dont need it. Use it as an inspiration to get out of a hole if you must. But if you feel happy where you are, theres no need to change it.

I've been studying for my bachelor's degree for 10 years now because I couldn't accept my weakness. I denied as much as I could. I am insecure to begin with but I didn't want to give up and disappoint my family. Turns out that was my real weakness. Sometimes, when things are just TOO hard, it is important to say that you can't do it. I've had a depression since forever and I never wanted to give up on trying to improve. My life was shitty. I'm not accepting that it should be shitty. Giving up on trying to become happy with everything I have and letting go is my strength. Confronting my weaknesses can be done, yes. But I had to learn it the hard way that some hurdles are not overcome with just confronting them, with just failing and standing up again. Because that's what can break you too. Happiness is the lightray I find at the end of the tunnel. That breath of fresh air I get to go on. Happiness for me is very meaningful. Persuing meaning makes you happy. Everyone wants to be happy. No one wants to be unhappy forever. Why do we even do things? Is it because we find it so important? No, it's because it makes us feel better in the end. And that is happiness.
