I'm 100 percent behind you with the language-based approach. When I enlisted in the Army band, back in the 1980's, I didn't know much about playing jazz drums. At the Army-Navy school of music (at that time), they used language-based instruction to teach jazz, which made it possible to get us all up to speed in as short an amount of time as possible. Phrasing was the primary concern will all instruments, but especially with drums. Comping was taught as a conversation between the rhythm section and the soloist. This made all the difference in the world to me. Keep fighting the good fight!

Couldn’t agree more- without getting into a rant myself, this is definitely something I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older/distanced myself from my experience in school. Learning to be confident in what you offer on the bandstand, learning to take accountability for you can do better, and learning to listen to others with love and respect are really (in my opinion at least) what it’s all about

This is well-timed. While recording and playing back something I was working on last night, I had a real, “Man, do I suck!” moment. Spent the next two hours (and will continue) working on correcting what was going on. A teacher told me a couple of decades ago always to record myself and listen critically to the results. I make my best progress when I do that.

Excellent points. My biggest driving force is fear of showing my weaknesses. I know what they are and work hard to bury them. As to ego ,, if you act like your the best most players won,t enjoy working with you and will not want to in the future. When I was young and had important gigs I always had a roll of fruit lifesavers in my stick bag. At the end of the gig I ,d take a moment to evaluate my performance to decide if I earned a lifesaver. More times than not I didn't,t give myself the lifesaver because a fast samba wasn,t flowing enough or something like I was chicken and careful at the expense of good flow. I was a brutal critic of myself!

I think your points are true for all fields of entertainment. Whether an actor, singer, or any performer. I used to travel the country doing Magic Shows and I always told the up and coming acts that it is "Not what you do but How you do it." And "It is not about you it about the audience and integrity of the performance." I don't know if that relates but thanks for your "Rant."

Great insights as always Quincy, for a long time I misunderstood not having an ego with not having confidence. Meditation, and books like "The Inner Game of Music" or "The War of Art" or "FLOW" helped me with that. One of the great things I like to do is to listen me back and do a small comment on my playing based on what i'm aiming to sound. First it was all "negative comments" but slowly the positive came in! And a lot of this is thanks to your content and Joe Farnsworth content!

I have a huge ego... but when it comes to playing drums... that ego goes out the window. I know I'm not good enough and frankly, I fantasize about being the best. I watch something like Whiplash and desire that restlessness. The difference with me is that I desperately want to do the work, but I'm not developing enough. I write this as someone who has played for years self-taught (rock drumming) and has had a deep lust for jazz drumming, but can only play the basic swing pattern. I have no fucking clue how it is everyone is counting this shit. How anyone does this shit. I'm clearly at the very bottom of knowledge and I'm tired of being there.
