I’ll have to watch this again next week when it’s my birthday. The thing I liked about when you soloed on Happy Birthday was that you threw in hooks that kept us knowing where you were in the “form” from time to time. Sometimes I play with guys that blow over the tune and never clue you in at any spot. Yes, I keep the form going in my head while I’m playing/comping but sometimes I think “wait, is he with us? I’m with the bassist but is he with us?”. Keying people in helps them help you formulate your ideas. All this is my opinion obviously, well except the part about it being my birthday next week. Merry Christmas Quincy! FP

I believe that we really do play from the soul, so who you are as a person will always come through in your playing. This is why I believe that I have been unsuccessful in my playing, I've got no personality 😂

Fantastic lesson! Loved this. Elvin also emphasised singing, as did Purdy of course. Meanwhile, dynamics, accents, textures, enhanced notes, groove and orchestration -- as you describe and demonstrate -- are the essence of musicality. Well done.

Great video and approach to musicality !! The textures part i don't fully comprehend, you are just referring to add cymbals?
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 9 ай бұрын
Textures can be anything that’s not a conventional single or double stroke on a drum or cymbal. Buzz, scrape, playing on the rims, etc…

Great content as always Quincy. Master Carl Allen stresses the importance of practicing musically, stating that "private practice determines public performance". Your video is a great example of practicing not only towards being a better drummer, but also a better MUSICIAN. God bless you brother!
