It's Not What You Think! Arms Straight Secret! 🔑

The ability to keep your LEAD ARM STRAIGHT in the golf swing has a direct influence on how successfully you manage the radius of your swing, and RADIUS MANAGEMENT = CONTACT CONSISTENCY!
So many golfers are plagued by arms that flex too much throughout the golf swing which leads to issue with CONTACT, CONSISTENCY and LOSS OF POWER.
And unfortunately, despite knowing that your arms are flexing too much, simple "trying to keep the lead arm straight" isn't going to fix your problems any time soon, and that's because the REAL cause of your flexed LEAD arm, is your excessively flexed TRAIL ARM. That's right, the reason you have poor arm structure is the fault of your TRAIL arm - you've been looking in the wrong place all this time!
The Golfing Machine Book explains this phenomenon as "extensor action".
The relationship between your hands on the grip is called EXTENSOR ACTION. Since your left arm is kept straight by the outward pressure of your right palm against your left thumb, the length of the radii created by your arm and the club remains the same. Therefore, your club must inevitably make good contact with your ball. Extensor action joins the hands together and allows the two arms to work together. As long as a steady outward pressure against the thumb is maintained, the left arm will remain straight and will be tension free, from address to the top of the back swing, returning to impact.

I keep extra golf clubs set aside in our living room, my home office and lanai (screened in porch) for when I watch Rob’s videos so I can try to mimic the moves and positions he describes. Not sure my wife is real happy about it but my golf game has definitely improved. Seriously!

This is the best explanation of the right arm and hand I have seen by anyone. I always heard that you move through like skipping a rock but it did not resonate with me. The pushing of the right arm is the swing thought I needed. I was trying to make my left arm rigid and honestly, my elbow on my left arm was developing tendinitis and I was just getting frustrated, as my arms were bending through impact and follow through. I knew I needed to keep my elbows close and get width on my backswing but I could not feel it. The pushing of the right arm, particularly through impact makes it easier for me to keep my shaft lean and move my hands through impact. I think being so right hand dominated caused me to struggle and for this explanation to make so much sense to me.

Rob, I have played golf approximately 40 years, am 72 years old. Have been struggling with my game the past year or more. Hitting ball fatigue,thin, etc. Have played two rounds since watching your video above. It has made a tremendous difference in my Iron play as far as striking the ball much more solid and consistently. I am going to practice this move of tucking in the right elbow on a daily basis. My last two rounds were 82 and yesterday 79 ! It has been a very long time since I turned in scores like this! Thanks for a great lesson, you definitely have my attention. 😊

This is incredible Rob! I've just started working on S&T, and I just wasn't able to get that top of the backswing position that you see in every good player. I was struggling mightily. I figured I was just too heavyset or my arms were too short or I was too inflexible or something, and I would never be able to do it. Then I saw this video! That right hand being in the correct position and providing pressure is the secret sauce. It all fell right into place and I'm giddy! I'm wearing out the mirror watching me construct the arm structure over and over again...lol. Thank you so much!Your videos have had the most impact on me as far as developing my swing.

Love your content, Rob. Just want to point out however that if you look at the slow motion, what you’re actually doing is different than what you tell us you’re doing. I’m referring to that flying wedge look that you ultimately finish in, isn’t what is happening through p7 to p8. You’re actually releasing the club slightly through p8 then coming back to that wedge position artificially. Would you agree? Having said that, if we take your video to be fact, how would you alter it for Driver?

Fair point and good observation. The post impact “feel” that I’m describing is a feel I’m searching for, rather than an actual achievable position. But it serves to delay the release enough to still allow for the desired impact alignments with the arms/wrists/club. Hope that makes sense.

I used to hit horrible slices with my driver, but once I learned about tucking in the trail arm that went away, now I have a tendency to hit a VERY VERY mild fade with my driver, better then slicing it off the planet.

Lately I've been trying to get my lead shoulder under my chin more, because I feel like this helps to keep more width in my swing & a straighter left arm. Does that make any sense Rob?
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 6 ай бұрын
It does… but I wouldn’t necessarily say that one equals the other. But the thought you’re describing could certainly encourage more width and a straighter left arm.
