Wow… watched this a few days ago as I knew I had a sequencing issue after playing the worst golf I’ve played in ages. I realized I was going from 0-100 as quickly as I could from top of backswing. Went out the next day and had huge improvement and much better ball striking. Many more habits to address but I am now a subscriber. Really well presented, with clear explanation im glad I found this valuable resource on KZbin and I’ve watched many! Thank you Rob. Going on a quest now to watch all your videos and recommend to others 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It’s true and it’s contradictory to what so many golf instructors have been preaching for. The notion that you start your downswing with a hip turn has messed up many golfers. No worry- your hip turn will naturally take the lead later in the swing because the club-head has a much longer path to travel along. However, starting the swing with a pull down motion of your arms will get you on the right inside-out swing path and allow you to develop better rhythm as well as swing speed. Swing speed needs to happen at impact and through the impact zone, not at the beginning phase of your downswing.

If you ‘slo-mo’ his ‘slo-mo’ swing, you can clearly see that his first move from the top of his swing, is the leftward move of his left hip. The downward arm movement is second. I understand what he’s trying to communicate and I will definitely try this swing tip.
@knuteboy3778Ай бұрын
Well said. A metaphor to help me understand this is picture a horse race, but instead of horses you have your arms, shoulders, and hips each in a different gate. When the gun fires and the gates fly open this drill just ensures that the arms get a little bit ahead. Doesn't mean that they will win the race. There's a lot of controversy with this pull-down idea I've noticed. But you're not pulling down at the expense of the shoulders and the hips you're just ensuring proper sequence.

This practice move in isolation without any other body movement is really very good as it makes you just concentrate on just one thing only. I have practiced this move late yesterday and today and what a difference it is making. I have never felt this position before in the down swing and like so many, I have for so many years struggled with the downswing and my ability to keep my head behind the ball and to shallow the club. I have tried the Justin Rose split-hand drill that was supposed to help and I understand the concept, but he combines it with lower body movement. Robs drill is simply arms only to ingrain that feeling of pulling down while the back is more toward the target. As I said, doing this in isolation is so simple and gives a greater understanding of what the arms should doing. Brilliant advice as far as I am concerned, even for an oldie!

Great video. As a consummate ball topper and an amateur slicer this is the swing habit I have to cure. And indeed if I super focus on not doing the aggressive swing start my swing is easy and I hit the ball. But the old muscle memory soon (quickly) creeps back and there I am killin’ the ball again. Also as a tall player myself its good to see your setup posture and how you slightly round your shoulders a bit.

i've learned the fundamentals of this through both watching and trail and error. my best shots come when i've had deep and full pivot (felt by a stretch through the lats) while maintaining a still head, slight forward sway, drop arms hold off and..... swing through and extend. the rotation then comes natural and the hips twist forward. my first instructor insisted that everything is initiated by the hip rotation. this was a mess and while it could sorta work, (rapid hip unwind) it was painful and required extreme club face maneuvering to square up. at this point, i have no interest in working any longer with anyone who is a TPI guru. i think they cause more problems than they solve.

Rob, great video, but I worry a bit about the Bryson example. I personally don't suffer from the early body rotation (I suffer from lack of rotation later!) but when I use that 'Bryson' hard pull drill (I do it for speed practice), I have a VERY hard time avoiding my lead wrist to extend at the same time - pulling the face open for a horrid miss right as my clubhead speed increases as well by 8-10 mph, so I would issue a warning with that video :-)

I find that when I just try to whack it and swing fast, I have a really early extension resulting in consistent topps or chunks. Started the worst round of my life yesterday 14 over through 3, and my friend just told me to slow it down...so I did and suddenly I could hit the ball again. Consistent striking with good distance and accuracy. If I was doing that for the first 3 holes, I'd have ended up with a fairly decent score. It's very tempting to try and speed it up, but a little bit of restraint can go a very long way.

I just went to the backyard net, sprayed some foot powder on the driver, and practiced this drill over and over and then was amazed. All my strikes were clustering in the center or center/toe. I'm over the moon right now! I suspect I had some issue with extending the right arm before impact, but this drill (along with right arm tucked in) helps keep everything in place. A small question. Do you think it's okay to do a little of that crush the can left knee moving down and forward with each pump of this drill? I feel like that's a great way to work in two feels at the same time.

Hi Rob, I'm a big fan of your channel. I've just been watching your swing in this video in slow motion and it appears to me that your swing definitely starts with your left hip moving towards the target. (Albeit. ever so slightly.) Can you clarify this please ... it's a bit confusing and I am struggling to start the swing with my hands and then smoothly intergrate that move into the downswing. (Maybe you could do a video on how to fit this move into the rest of the downswing.) All the best.

So you are so correct on this but how do we do this and then ramp it up to get our speed to the next level. I feel like I have a lot more in the tank but when I try to ramp it up everything breaks down again.

There is a huge difference between 1.35 smash factor and 1.5 smash factor using the same club swung at the same speed. A driver swung at 100mph and a 1.35 smash factor produces a ball flight of 135mph...same swing, same speed with 1.5 smash factor = 150mph ball speed. Yes, there is a big difference based upon the quality of contact the head makes with the ball.

Great video Rob! I've been swinging too fast on the downswing for years, but this year I've slowed my tempo & the results have been great. I feel like I'm pausing ever so slightly at the top & when the arms come down that there is a squatting motion down & a push in the left leg down & forward. Does that make sense? Thanks so much because your instruction has resulted in absolute joy with some of the drives & iron shots I have been making this year.

Excellent video. Very clear and useful practice tips. Thank you for that. Just a question for you related to your body weight transfer: with the driver you seem to keep the weight of your body on your left foot. Is it an impression or are you actually trying to keep the weight on your left foot during the whole swing? For example I could not see your left heel being lifted up during the back swing. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.

Yes, you’re right. This drill is to prevent excessive body rotation in the transition and help to speed the arms up. A smoother tempo tends to help with this.

Rob, this is really helpful. Does this lesson still conform to The Wrench video? How does it fit together? Thanks!

Well I was practicing it with the wrench and it was working beautifully. Which makes sense because the wrench is more about how you set your weight and this drill is more about how you start the downswing sequence with your arms. I think all these drills that Rob gives us work very nicely together. Almost like pieces of a puzzle.

Thank you for this. Is there ever a time we can use this drill TOO well? Too much arms instead of body? Hopefully, no. 😂

Unfortunately, yes. But you shouldn’t worry about that just now because VERY FEW people demonstrate this issue.
