Its important to remember: the founding fathers had no idea that modern electronic media would exist, not to mention distort the basic premise that "the people" would form the secure foundation and legitimacy of "Democracy" as they knew it then and there. In fact, its hard to make a strong case for the implicit competency of the modern electorate, given the veritable non-existence of common critical thinking skills on the part of the typical US citizen.

Sorry, commentator on the left. You just stated inaccurate information as if it were fact. The statement that these new weapons can shoot at a much greater distance is completely false. The AR 15 (5.56mm) used in the assassination attempt is a mid range weapon, maximum effective range, 500 to 600 m. The standard service rifle in World War I could reach out to 1000 m. There are numerous long range rifles that can reach out to 1000 m plus. Please be a good journalist, research your material and avoid taking statements regarding firearms from self-serving politicians as fact.
