I always knew that the other groups would outpace Hat films, even with the limit to only play at the same times. Duncan and Harry just have a way quicker pace than the bois, one literally speed runs the game and the other likes to complete sprawling mega packs. I am actuallly way more up for a slower one to listen too like a podcast in the background.

Hopefully Trott, Hulmes, and the rest who still want to play can figure some path forward. Honestly, this multi-channel VH series has been my favorite thing to watch. My daily comfort show to watch at lunch. And, NGL, it's the only reason I subbed to the channel and started watching other content like Worms. Of course we don't want anyone not enjoying it to feel they have to play. But, I'm hopeful the server can continue even if the team compositions change. Anyone who has watched you guys for a while saw this coming. It felt like you were holding out on the hope that Create was going to make things more fun, but I think we all saw the writing on the wall after watching you guys try and fail to get a water wheel spinning lol. I think you guys would like Create, but with how VH modifies it and with all the other fuckery that comes along with VH, I don't think it's well presented for you three to enjoy. I think the best minecraft series you guys ever did was the skyblock with sips. Skyblock packs are just inherently chill since you start with fuck all to do by design, and basically have to make your own fun (and are guided on doing so). I'm looking for a good skyblock pack myself, would love to play one alongside you guys if you pick one up. Some I've considered: "All the mods 7 - to the sky" looks pretty fun, has a lot of mods built in with a quest guide, and was last updated April 2023 so seems active. "Sky Chefs" sounds kinda fun/cute but can't seem to find any content about it. Was last updated today so even more active, but not nearly as popular

I'd honestly just suggest All The Mods 8, it gives you magic, engineering and some of the more challenge based content if you do ever want to do that too. You can also just faff about without too much worry, it's generally not too hard to reach automation for some things so that can let you not focus on farming resources once you eventually get to that point to giving more time for what you want to do.

I think the problem isn't necessarily even the mods, but just what the point is. What was the end goal of this series? What would the end goal of ATM8 be? Knew this would've been over quite quickly... I think the lack of an overall goal was the problem- the lads feeling like they had to grind tricky mechanics for no reason. Switch the vaults out for some old-school voltz or something. I think promising Smith and Ross that they'll have the opportunity to nuke other teams might get them a little more invested. Maybe a little mischievousness by allowing teams to clash, fight and steal might allow for more of the good crack.

@@factzilla1868 This is why I think they need to look at it from a different perspective- perhaps involving the community, becoming kings of the server or just allowing for hijinks and mayhem would allow for more of the RP they're clearly after. Doing the same thing over and over is pointless.
@RubelliteFae Жыл бұрын
I think their only goal was to catch up their level to other teams-which of course is Sisyphean. I think they would have enjoyed more if they didn't worry about vault levels so much and just concentrated on working with the mods. There's no reason that everyone on the same research team should need to do the vaults if they don't want to (every team had their player that works more on overworld stuff: Ross, Boba, Ben)

Kind of sad seeing it end, but I totally get it. Vault Hunters doesn’t really offer a lot of interaction with other teams or just general exploration. Like bringing back a community Yogs server is something that hasn’t been done in a while, but all three teams seem to just spend a lot of time at their own base when not vaulting so there isn’t a lot of interaction even with the more active members.

It's kinda incredible that the boiks have had minecraft as a relative staple for the channel, when the majority of their minecraft series have ended with then randomly dropping out of them, but I think it's because it was such a good vehicle for shit-talking. Trott loves the grind and exploring intricacies of a pack, Smith loves being a nerdy little combustion goblin, and Ross loves being a workhorse where he can jump from project to project. I think a series with a sense of finality is gonna be a good one for the boiks, one that has goals to hit and places to explore while having mods that are easy to understand but difficult to master. Smith and Ross just work on 100% short-term memory with minecraft, so that 'easy to understand' and goal orientation will help quickly set them up for each recording session

I’ve been a long time watcher of Hat Films, since they did the Wool Race for the Yogs channel, and the main issue I have these days is lack of variety vs. progression. The heyday of this channel for me was when every other week, they’d play some random coop game and had solid formats like “Havin’ A Bash”, had endless replay-ability to chat shit over games like Trials or short game series like GTA heists; mixed in with them doing some random irl VLOGs pissing about or mini trips. When I see “Minecraft Modpack Pt.1” in my feed, i just know it’s not gonna be rewarding to watch. It always trails off because any long form Minecraft series is basically outlined by “10 layered mechanics, resource gathering loop, no end or end goal, intense focus”. There’s a line between watching them depressingly trudge hard-to-grasp mechanics for 60 hours vs. them hysterically laughing at failing in games like the SWAT game recently or Human Fall Flat. These are games they can drop after 3 parts and move into another without us questioning it or expecting commitment to a greater series; without a fourth party like Sips to bounce off, I don’t think anyone here as an adult fan really wants a 40 part series. I try and watch most the boiks videos still as they’ve been a huge part of my life, but the main point is - we don’t care about the games, at all. We want to hear Smith talk misinformed science and crazy political takes, Trott laughing cause he’s fucked up and Ross in tears over some heinous dark humour joke the others said; then something mindless and basic that enables them to fight and laugh as the backdrop. The videos we as fans cherish the most is just Craig behind the camera and watching your chemistry as long time best friends shine. As far as minecraft, I’ve always thought adventure maps would be funny, there’s a story they can follow and fuck about with. But other games, why not multicam playthroughs of horror games like Amnesia or Outcast, or Elden Ring coop mod; the boss fights would be hilarious. Anyway, love the boys ❤ just wanna see them back in their prime and laughing away 🎩

I wanted to add as well, I think something that potentially hinders the channel is the lack of someone as a ‘producer’ perhaps. I’ve been a day one watcher of other OG group channels like The Creatures/Cow Chop and The Sidemen (say what you will) and the success of those channels was contributed by the weekly variety, you’d get something new everyday; and the subject of the video would be picked out and produced by a member - mainly based on their own interests. I think the Sidemen view wise nail it because their every-Sunday upload schedule is on a 7 member rotation and they leave one member solely in charge of directing and arranging the content, so it’s always fresh ideas. And the The Creatures, my longest watched channel, were booming views between 500k-1mil in their height by just doing random stuff picked out by each member; anyone would think of something random and on the spot, pick up a camera, grab a friend and go film it. I don’t know if they would ever go about it considering how long they’ve been doing it independently, but I imagine if every so often a fourth party said “you’re doing this today, i’ve arranged it” be that a random day out or weird coop indie game, it takes pressure off them and they can just talk away without all the pressure of planning and worrying what will work for views/sub counts.

honestly, sod finding a new modpack. Thats your answer. You need to think less about what's a new thing we can play, and more about what new format can we construct that will suit our very particular enjoyments. VH was made for people who want infinite challenging replayability in minecraft, and a way to detach from the world - in short, it was made for Harry. Some commenters below will suggest new modpacks but it's entirely down to how you interface with them, and most modpacks require you to play the exact same way as always. Look to how each of you play and enjoy games, and look to ways to vary or constrain what you can do in the game to change things up. Smith wants to play something that gives you cool things to do without grinding forever. Ross wants to pot about building, low skill but highly creative tasks. Trott wants a game to play, things to complete and check off, number go up, achievement get. Of all of them Trott is most arsed to learn something and commit time to things, and maybe thats just because he played VH in his spare time and liked it. Smith was happy to get stuck into vaults, but hated having to git gud, especially constantly comparing their progress to other teams. Ross plays games very differently, was never going to improve smacking his head against something so glorpy and rigorous, and was just surviving through repeated vaults. They want to lego talk but they're having to take their attention back to vaulting, just to survive, which they end up not doing and make zero progress. Build a Hat Pack. Have Create in there, have Thaumcraft, whatever mods you want but nothing that destroys the base game with over-complexity. Have some traditional RPG mods that could give you abilities, stats, more overworld structures and cool biomes. Do your research and don't put in a tonne of glorp, and DONT just grab a questbook modpack. Hulmes doing quests was a legit refreshing idea, harkens back to SoI and the capability of the yogs to tell stories and dick about, and I'm sad we didn't see more of that - the VH parts kind of sidelined that way too strongly. As for what the audience wants: - the Hats loving something enough to actually want to learn (will require a very low barrier to entry) The fact that everything that piqued your interest is gated behind such a massive grind is the biggest reason this failed. You need to be engaged from the start. It works for high-skill psychos like Harry, who are happy to grind and learn a whole new game in a couple of hours and then get rewarded for that dedication to the challenge with a whole heap of new content. - Minecraft, Hats in Minecraft (people are nostalgic for minecraft, it does what other games will try and fail to accomplish, and we KNOW minecraft - we like VH but its just not the right fit for Hat Films). I personally take huge breaks away from the content of HF and some other Yogs, because they get into a groove playing a game I just don't enjoy. Minecraft is one of the few that I can consistently rely on being able to watch for a while. I hardly ever get to watch Sips, cos hes always playing Rimworld, games that just dont interest me. Honestly, a lot of the Yogs content these days has been stale, and it's entirely the games fault, it's not from a lack of being entertaining on the part of the Yogs members. A lot of us came to the world of gaming videos and livestreams through minecraft, and would have never had the same engagement to the majority of games on the market. - Building a world, not a camp. Instead of the usual modpack energy of building a lag-factory or a messy outdoor complex. Single-blocks that do everything (which most modpacks use) are the reason nothing interesting gets built, because you can just have all your items made, stored and upgraded in one room. RP might be a good way to achieve this too, with shops, factories, territories, trade routes. You can do it with or without a mod, but I'm sure there are tonnes of mods that could help achieve this. Create being a good one for factories. It might seem pointless, but putting constraints on anything that is just craft-block-to-win WILL let you focus on those things you enjoy - building and creating because you want to achieve something. - ANY BIG YOGSCAST SERVER - people have been crying for this since Tekkit days, it just makes sense. Sips' dadcraft was so good, and then stopped, Capture the Wool was fun but now is solely a community thing, this was the closest real attempt at a Yogs server and now its gone too - at a time when so many yogs are playing and enjoying minecraft too. Take a look at the VH server that Harry is on, and some of the minecraft servers Martyn is on, particularly the New Life SMP, where the players have defining abilities and the focus is on builds. None of these verbatim will be a good fit, but theres tonnes of inspiration. And a lot of the hesitancy from some of the Yogs to join comes more from the knowledge that it probably isn't going to last too long, so why try and get committed. If someones going to do it, be committed and you will succeed. I'm rooting for you, and hope you find something more to your liking. If you read this, I'm sorry for it being so long but please take note, I think I've really covered what most of the audience is hoping for. Ultimately though, the audience only really wants HF to be happy. Do what you like. End of.

They never really reached the grind. I guarantee they had all the resources to make cool create stuff, make refined storage, and do pretty much anything they wanted reasonably in the mid game. It's not that they don't want "a lot of grind" it's that they want no grind. Nothing, free resources with no time put in and make cool shit. And that's fine, but it gets boring when you spawn everything in and complete a mod pack in 5 hours. That would be, what, 5 episodes at most. I just think they should let Trott do minecraft and the trio can do other things. Create still has a huge grind to it and so does Thaumcraft

It's funny because now they are levelled up and have got better, Duncans team do a lot of lego talk and banter whilst vaulting which makes them seem less of a chore compared to the hats.

@@jamesbaurus5928 "Its that they want no grind" is a problem with a lot of the Yogs, which Ive never understood given all of them have thousands of hours on Dota, all of them find the time to play games off stream. I do think it stems from, they have to be initially invested and rewarded heavily to stick with it, otherwise theyd rather be anywhere else. Which is a weird perspective - if you have an open mind and stick with something eventually you'll be too committed to not get good and find some level of enjoyment. I think, change up the playstyle to be less about "I do the glorp because modpack say glorp" which is just frustrating, boring and has no endgame. Doesnt this sound much more fun. We're on a server with friends, lets build a cool base, lets build a town we can meet, lets set challenges and games for each other, lets delegate industries and trade resources and have territory we fight over. We can lean into a bit of RP, flexing those creative muscles that we've always had and used to great effect (think their Music streams, any time they play DnD, or when their usual lego talk gets whimsical). And I don't see how that forces them into any pointless grind or tedium, it can facilitate any and all of their playstyles and enjoyments.

@@finleyjennings6051 Ye they really bailed at a strange point. They had the mindset of, this wont be fun until we unlock X. Which meant until they unlocked X, it wasn't fun because they wouldn't let it be. And when they unlocked X, if X wasn't absolutely amazing, effortless, super fun right away, then nothing about the game is fun anymore. And why bother. Wrong mindset from the get go. Duncan is very good at being carefree. Its why he comes across as absolutely incompetent 90% of the time, and then actually pops off. He really doesnt think, "I can't believe Im not as good at this as I thought", and just keeps at it until he is good. Harry of course was just good at the game. He gets there by putting in a lot of hours, sure, but its more than that. Hes rigorous when it comes to learning and improving, he knows where the gaps in his skill are and puts in a lot of time to plug them. He leans on the blebs to tell him what hes not appreciating. You can do all of this without hours and hours of dedication. The Hats play for hours and hours without the right mindset, and this was exascerbated by VH being very skills focused. Ben was for a long time in that mindset of not feeling competent. He was also very attentive to YT comments and let it get him down. But the sheer level of improvement from Ben to go from literally 0 experience to where he is now, is impressive. it is all down to mindset to difficulty, approach to learning and an open mind.

I like Vault Hunters but I think it suffers a bit from complexity/implicit knowledge and a community that can be a bit toxic at times. I played it a lot but the latest changes have leaned heavily into min/maxing and requires an in-depth understanding of game mechanisms which most casual players don't have/want. When you watch streams now, it's just level 80 and above players speed running vaults over and over again, with a community that's highly critical of any other form of gameplay. That's really not fun for a lot of people and I can totally understand why it has put people off. I'm a big fan of extraction shooters but I feel Vault Hunters is something else/is going in a different direction. That said, people still love it and that's great. On to the next thing for the rest of us.

MODPACK TIPS: ATM8 (or 9 when that gets updated and good :P) Since Thaumcraft is dead(basically devs changed and its farthest down on a todo list :c ) I recommend getting into Ars Nevau/Evil craft/Botania for Smith. Create is Greate (HAHAH.. kill me) and is in most modern extra large packs :D along side with AE2 and/or RS for storage. A mod I think Trott would enjoy returning to (since hatcorp if I remember correctly) is Mekanism and mekanism reactors, since they now have expanded it beyond just windmills with nuclear reactors :D Both ~Marble~ and other ~generic building materials~ exist, so that's nice for the resident pro minecrafter Woss_HTMLcineMax. ATM 8 Also has the ATM Mod for late game alongside :3 Hope to see you guys playing Minecraft soon again :))

My friends and i ran into similar issues, some liked the questing elements, others liked the more tech/comp stuff, some liked doing mega mines/mechanical etc and i enjoyed farming/cooking and building. We've not found a full ready to go pack that works for us yet, but had a bit more success of picking a pack and using that as a base to add more specific mods to. So perhaps try to find mods that you each want individually and see what works together with a pre built pack and them to it? Either way i'm looking forward to seeing what's next.

The Boiks rarely finish a goal. They start series and do stuff until one of them is bored and they just switch back to some golf and worms. The closest thing to a complete playlist is them playing GTA heists but I think much of that content was sponsored. You can tell neither Smith or Ross really care for minecraft and it was probably something Trott could have done with other members of the Yogs to create content. It would put all the work on his as the main editor but the other guys could have focused on something they enjoy to keep the pipeline full of content. At the end of the day, this is their job and a business. If a project isn't working you have to move on but maybe a bit more thought about the content pipeline and workflow would them find success as a team.

Reviving minecraft every 4 years is a Hat Films tradition where they endure it with forced enthusiasm for around 20-30 episodes before remembering why they stopped the last time. At least it wasn't Thaumcraft.

I think Smith said it best- that he wants to be able to mess about and "chat shit". A lot of the frustration that was growing in the comments was because these podcast style just chatting episodes fall flat, as when you click on a minecraft video you expect them to play minecraft. At what point does it become a 30 minute tik tok with a minecraft parkour overlay? The mods arent the issue, and trying new mods to achieve something different has led to the cycle you're talking about. The overall dynamic is what needs to change- not the mods.
@factzilla1868 Жыл бұрын
@@JJJW9W9W Yep and for the Minecraft stans: it's fine if they never try playing Minecraft again. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. They should be doing new things, the content Hat Films of 2023 actually enjoys making.

If you guys are wanting to go all out with a huge modpack then "TNP Limitless" is the way to go. Has quite a few magic, tech, building mods in it and doesn't really have anything locked behind progression (unless you want to craft creative items)

Over? We were just getting started! Now Ravs can adopt Trott. But seriously, I think goals-driven and/or competitive games that all three of you like and can also piss about in is the best way for Hat Films. Ross and Trials notwithstanding.

OCEAN BLOCK! Or realistically, the current ftb sky block because then Ross can build properly without being underwater

A couple suggestions are Stoneblock which they’ve been playing on the Yogs main channel. Basically think Skyblock but stone dimension. Then there’s Simply Magic which is self explanatory. I guess one more I’d recommend would be Create Above and Beyond which is a pack centered around the Create mod.
@MaxWidogast Жыл бұрын
I don't think Stoneblock is very appealing to them since it's literally a cave you have to dig out yourself. Seeing Ross create elaborate buildings in the world is one of the best things, you can't really do that in stoneblock.
