I sailed for many years. I had a cruiser, much like yours, which had a cook stove much like your new one. My boat had a heat shield covering the surface of the nook in which it lived. The heat shield consisted of a thin sheet of metal covering the surfaces of the nook into which the stove was installed. The idea is that the metal sheet distributes the heat over the entire heat shield, thus preventing high heat from the stove doing damage to the inner wood surface of the nook in which the stove lives.

Hey Ned, I know what that hole is, it’s not for a heater, it’s for a periscope, just in case you take on too much water! BUT that won’t happen if you carry a few cans of the Great Stuff, expanding construction foam for backyard ponds, works great in an emergency. If you get a crack or hole in your hull you can spray the foam into the crack or hole while underway. If it’s a large hole you can stuff a plastic bag into the hole then quickly fill it with foam! You guys are awesome, good luck, smooth sailing… Happy Sails!

Looking good guys. Your hard work is paying off. Here’s a tip for getting a match on the texture in your boat… Get some silicone caulk, clean a section of your ceiling away from where you’re working and put some cleaner wax on it so it’s really slick and then spread about a quarter inch layer of the silicone caulk over that section of the ceiling and let it cure. Once it’s cured, peel the silicone off and you will have a mold of the pattern of your ceiling, then apply your Bondo over your area of repair and once you have it spread out, take your mold and push it up into the Bondo and it will replicate the pattern of your ceiling and once the bondo is cured, peel the silicone off and you should have a pretty good match of the ceiling texture. Best of luck!😁

I used a silicone for creating molds to copy my structure in the ceeling. Peeled it off and used it on my repair. Taped off the area, put gelcoatputty on the silicone and pushed it up in the area. The day after it was just the edges to fix 👍 great to see you getting it done 💪

To fix your ceiling, make a stamp from the existing ceiling. Cut a small round board slightly larger than your repair area. Put about a 1/8 inch layer of bindi on the board. Rub wax or oil on a small area of your ceiling and then push the wood with bono onto the waxed ceiling. Hold until bono hardens. Pull off and you have a stamp to fix your repair areas. Put you bondo on the repair area, wax your stamp, and press it on the ceiling. When bondo is hard, pull stamp away and you should have perfect ceiling texture on repair areas. Good luck.

Stain is meant to be wiped off after a short period. You can re-apply after each coat dries, but puddles should be wiped off. I use 2 cloths, one for applying and 1 for wiping off. That way you work the stain into grain, without waste.

I know this information is too late. But here goes, If you are near a Home Depot or a Lowes OR .... a paneling store inquire if they have "vinyl paneling." I think you boat ceiling was done in vinyl paneling. It is only an 1/8" thick but it comes in 4' x 8' panels with that bumpy texture on one side. Smooth on the other. I think the stuff is great for laundry room walls and other spaces where you don't want to paint and a wipeable surface is desirable. BTW ... Good Job 👍

Nice progress! Matt, one trick for wetting out those 'glass patches is to put the patches on a piece of plastic sheet (visqueen), stack them a couple of layers thick and wet them out then stick the whole layup on the overhead and leave the plastic sheet until dry then peel. The plastic will act like a peel ply layer and may even give you some texture like the overhead has. I got my Sailing GBU shirt! thanks!

Matt, for plywood edges there are iron-on strips of thin wood veneer available. I’ve seem teak, mahogany etc. Iron on, trim, stain, finish. Makes plywood look like solid lumber and it’s quicker then trying to hand make pieces to hide the edge.

BTW, if your boat is a Hunter, they are a great sailing boat 🎉. We bought a 1985 Hunter 36 new and had her for 18 years and sailed everywhere on the east coast from Canada to New York. Always open ocean. She was a fine craft. And, yes, we did do some refit on the interior over time and algripped the exterior. Only sold her when we moved to Arizona....no ocean there.🤪 ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝👙🌞✨

Love the effort on the ceiling pattern. You could put peel ply over the patch and then use your texture tools on the peel ply. After it dries it will peel off still leaving the pattern.

You can make a 'perfect' match in the ceiling texture by creating a "mold" from any area of the existing ceiling. WEST System folks have instructions for doing it. It's most often done to make a match for repairs in Non-Skid areas, but it should work fine for "any" textured surface. It will be "exactly" the same texture as whatever surface you use to make the "mold"!

Good episode guys! Have an idea with regard to matching the ceiling texture: Is there some type of gel/nonstick silicone/silly putty type product you could hold up against the ceiling, and create a texture match? Then at the appropriate drying time in your bondo, or similar topcoat, apply the template to your ceiling patch? Just a thought and hope this helps you disguise the holes you eliminated. Really looks like the interior is starting to take shape. You have made a lot of progress! Take care and thanks for sharing your fun.

On a serious note if you’re looking for a random grove in texture you may can use a 18 grit sand added to your substrate and as it dries use a rubber trowel to do circles on it and create worm groves

Hi guys, treated pine will have a green or gray look to it. It won't be yellow / blonde like the stuff you're using.. Copper is still the most widely used element in wood preservatives and creates a green color on the wood. It's also a bit heavier more expensive and harder to cut.

Hey, don't let the ney-sayers steer you wrong when you know you're right. You don't need to use hardwoods on anything, with few exceptions, that isn't structural. Pine, as with all materials, has it's pros-n-cons. Pros: readily available, relatively inexpensive, easy to work with tools, generally holds fasteners well when pre-drilled and can be pressure treated. Cons: wide grained, tends to warp and/or twist if not properly seasoned, ends may split or check, pre-drill screws or nails. None of these are exclusive. Many hardwoods share similar

One thing always in short supply on a boat is ventilation. Surprised you did not just put in some kind of vent in those deck holes. There are many options available. I went with solar powered, low aspect power vents. You can get some with batteries so that you have 24 hr venting. When you close the hatches on that boat in the tropics, it gets stanky and hot. Vents with built in fans are a great benefit. But, too late now.

Hey guys great vid! You can cast a mold off the ceiling pattern. Coat a big section with wax aka mold release, take some thin fiberglass cloth and roll on the epoxy and the peel it off. Then you just reverse the procedure to pass that pattern off to your area. This is often done with the non-skid pattern on the decks.

I love y'all. I hate to see people "torching" you. You make choices I would not. I hate fiberglassing so I would have put vents or lights in the ceiling holes. That's just me. Everyone is different and thank God! I have two different tones of teak on my boat and bought cherry Penofin to stain and preserve it. I only follow a few sailing channels and yours is one. Some of those make crazy money and are really upgrading their boats. I have a Hunter too! It is a great boat and since I am inland, it is the trailerable 260. It costs 700 bucks a year to park it mast up at the lake. No bottom paint headaches!!! Keep on producing great content. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Why not take a template of the existing ceiling with clay or something that hardens then remove and let dry. Use THAT as your texturing stamp? :^) Also instead of the buterol tape sometimes wax from a toilet bowl ring works well to stop leaks. Should always keep 1 or 2 rings on board anyway in case of a hull puncture...

For the texture look you should take some silicone from a tube spread it on the existing texture. Let it dry peel it off and use it for a texture stamp. Be sure to wax the spot on the existing texture so the silicone wont stick. Beware if your intending to paint the textured area it wont take paint without some serious cleaning.

Glad you are finally using PVC sheet board as I suggested on a number of past episodes . A heat gun is better to use for bending , doesn't take a lot of heat ,so no need to burn it ,if you apply heat on the inside of the curve it will prevent the cracking on the outside . I'm sure you are wishing you had done all the cabinets ect ect with PVC ,much lighter and you'll avoid rot ect ect .

I would coat it so its as smooth as poss with minimal over paint on edges then as its dries get a piece of leather with a similar texture and hold onto the patch then carefully roll over it with a hard roller and just let that fall away. A patch though will always look like a patch but not as bad as a smooth circle. I've done a lot of matching in the construction industry and often you will find something lying around that will do the job. I guess though you have finished this by now and it looks just spiffing

For future ceiling/overhead finish repair work, with easy and workable textures, simply use indoor/outdoor spackling. The new type dries hard, waterproof, is sandable and forms as desired. It's the easy way and saves a lot of time and frustration as you experienced. Hard 2 part epoxy or Bondo is definitely out, for the last finishing coat, which gets painted anyway..

Matt, you are something! Your work ethic is admirable. However, sometimes you seem to create a lot of work for your self. To seal the two deck penetrations two stainless plates for the exterior and two plastic plates for the interior would have resulted in a nice clean watertight look. Cost about 20 bucks. Time about 20 minutes. I am currently re-doing a Bristol 45.5 and am always confronted with similar problems. Look for the quick and easy, yet professional, way out. Hey guys, you’re amazing and adaptive! I love how Matt makes lemonade with the lemons life throws at him. Here’s an idea to match the ceiling texture, if it isn’t to late: get some playdoh or any moldable substance that won’t stick to the ceiling and squeeze some of it between a scrap of ply and the ceiling. Then, pull it off the ceiling, let it firm up and use that as your mold (instead of the tin foil). Or just put a cool sticker up there! 😂

Then squeeze out a big gob of 100% silicone caulking onto a piece of waxed paper, then plop that messup there on the headliner! Tape into place til it’s dry! Then remove ur silicone blob & lo & behold, U now have a perfectly textured matching mold that U can press into ur fresh gelcoat r putty r whatever & it will leave a matching texture! B sure 2 coat ur mold 1st, so it don’t stick! Just keep repeating the pattern 4 large areas! Works like a charm!👍

I love the layout of the hunter . How well does it sail in ruff seas I've read articles there a well built boat but from what I've heard they are to lite and are a ruff ride in high seas . If you have the time could you give me your thoughts on them

Duplicating textures as an artist is my specialty. Try cellophane on the texture you want, then pressing something that will harden into the cellophane against the texture you're duplicating. Allow it to dry and you should get a good stamp to use. Nice work guys, you're both entertaining and you'll get er done well enough to get back to your adventures 😁🤙⛵

Get some mold released and take a print or mold off your existing ceiling, and you can match the ceiling texture almost perfect . Have fun people !

Try making a 'mold' of the overhead texture to be used as a stamp when the finish paint is applied.

Hey guys the natural wood will darken up under the stain an sealer. If your veneer is synthetic it will stay the same. It’s a looking good, enjoy the process. Much luv from the great white north.

I am so pleased to see the two of you working together. Whether sailing or fixing. I see love in your relationship. That is more special than you can know. I have unusual knowledge about love. So when I say, you two are special, you need to see that as a real compliment. Literally, it is the difficulties the two of you overcome that creates the love you share. Love is not rose pedals on the bed. It is victories achieved over obstacles. You do it together. That is where love is forged.

What about those bolts sticking out from the base of the mast in your cabin? A nice ring to go around that area would hide them and look much more finished. Love you guys.

Given that the hole has been filled and sanded smooth and is flush with the surrounding area, applying additional epoxy for creating the textured effect to match the surrounding area, it is likely that the additional epoxy (with or without any texture) will create a hump. To minimize this hump, apply the additional epoxy thinly and sparingly. As for the texturing process, you might try experimenting with a different technique. Instead of applying the epoxy to the area and then texturing it, put the epoxy on a pallet of scrap wood, then dabbing the texturizing material very lightly onto the epoxy on the pallet, then transferring this epoxy to the patched area on the ceiling. This should minimize any noticeable hump. Good luck! You guys are doing really good work!

Tube of silicone . Apply one quarter inch layer on cabin ceiling in about a six inch circle. Let dry. Peel. Presto, you just made a pattern stamp.

Love the channel. To match the texture on your patches have you tried using the existing texture as a template. You might try waxing or applying a small amount of oil to an existing texture spot and press some clay or putty on that area to make a stamp. You can then use the stamp after it hardens to press onto your patch skim coat to leave behind a matching texture.

Hey Matt and Kristen, there you are again, on time. Thanks again this time and boy can you both work together good. I can't wait till you get the new engine and show us how you put it in. And Matt, hunters aren't cool, sorry to burst your bubble. Oh well we can't win them all and I've been uncool in my life lots of times. Well carry on and have been watching your videos since you started. Hey by the way I haven't seen your cat lately, forget his name. Bear? Well catch you later and God bless you both.
