As Rick has gathered interviews for IT'S PITTSBURGH episodes over the last 2 seasons, he has often ended the conversation by asking, "Why do you live in Pittsburgh?" In this program, we edit together many of the responses, and we look at the Experienced Dreamers Contest that challenged entrepreneurs over 45 years of age to write about why they could bring their dream to Pittsburgh. It's an entertaining consideration of one of life's great questions.

I visited on July 3rd I cried when I left this time. I was so hard to leave. The reason: I forgot how to get to the southside by bus. So asked a stranger at a bus stop. They told me they were going on the same bus. This person made sure I got on the right bus got off at the stop I needed and took me to the right place i was looking for. ! The people are the best in the world!

I'm as European as they come but for some reason I've fallen in love with the idea of Pittsburgh. I'd buy a plane ticket just to visit Pittsburgh. People seem so much nicer, smarter and more humane than in other cities in the States. It seems like a cozy city with a bunch of nice, down to earth hard working people. I'm a new Pittsburgh Pirates fan too by the way, that's how it all started. Please stay the way you are Pittsburgh, at least until I come visit!!GO BUCS! Greets from Greece!

I grew up in Pittsburgh and lived here til I retired. We decided to move to Florida for the great weather - and lets face it Pittsburgh has awful weather. However, after being here in Florida 12 years I am oh so homesick for Pittsburgh. You just can't compare the people anywhere else with the people of Pittsburgh. We are just back from a 3 week vacation there and will be going back for a month in the fall. We do plan to move back - snow or no snow - I'll take Pittsburgh over anywhere else.

I also love the fact that you can live in vandergrift, waynesburg, or Irwin and when somebody asks where your from the response is always Pittsburgh. I've been to LA, San Diego, Miami, New York , Philly, Houston, New Orleans, Phoenix, Chicago, etc. and I have no desire to live anywhere else. It will alway be HOME to me.

I moved to Pittsburgh from ugly Houston, TX and this city is incredible. I just need to find a good paying job first, decent employment, even with a degree in geology is quite hard to come across but I dont want to leave this city. The history here is amazing, and the views are incredible everywhere. Plus the mountains are just an hour away, and there are beautiful waterfalls all over the place in the region. So much history everywhere, its awesome.

I moved to Pittsburgh from Nova Scotia, Canada in 1963 when I was 8 years old. My father was a physician and went to work at Pitt Medical School. We only stayed there for 4 years and moved to Central Pennsylvania so my father could start a private practice. I love these Pittsburgh shows because they bring back such wonderful memories of my first home in the United States! Great place with great people.

I moved here from Buffalo in late 2011 with my wife whose job was relocated. I'm so glad I did! I had thought about doing so back in the 90s and I wish I had. It's such a great city - compared to Buffalo, the people are almost as friendly but Pittsburgh has so much energy and optimism. It's a city that is moving forward, not clinging to its past. I love the architecture, the sports teams, the economy, the events, and the weather is better (if you like rain better than snow!). Now, Buffalo is a nice place to visit now and then - it's a food city, the summers are full of great festivals, it's a lower cost of living and the terrain is more accessible for travel - but it's still economically and socially depressed (and the sports teams suck!) and the winters are HORRIBLE. I just couldn't ever imagine moving back there. I'm a Pittsburgher now!

I'm the opposite. I live 45 minutes away from Madison in the country. I was born and raised here, and I don't like WI. Been to Pittsburgh twice and love it. My best friend moved there, which I will eventually move there. Pittsburgh just has more opportunities for me than here. Wisconsin sucks to be honest. I don't like the weather, the winters suck, and trying to make friends here is impossible. I tried making friends here and most people are like "eh leave me alone" or "I don't really know you." Places here are expensive, and a lot of things are overpriced here. In Pittsburgh, I can actually make friends, find cheap places to live. Actually, my friend just got a 3 story rent-to-own house that we are going to live in. So, I don't have to worry about being homeless. I just feel Pittsburgh would be better than WI, I want something new in my life.

Most people consider pittsburgh a smaller city but fail to realize it's only small on paper with 300,000 people. But it's borders have remained the same size since early 1900. Most major cities expand there border to half or most of there counties anywhere between 500 and 800 square miles. Pittsburgh is only 55 Sq mi. If it were the same area as most other cities, pop would be 1.3 million. 2.0 urban. 3.0 metro. And would actually be the 9th largest city in the us lol. True story. Not to mention it's the top 5 most density populated city in us.

I'm so glad about what you said here. I have tried to explain exactly what you just said to a lot of younger people who call Pittsburgh small. Pittsburgh is a major metropolitan area. Up until the 70s we were in the 10 metro areas population wise. So calling Pittsburgh a small city is not correct unless you are just referring to the city limits. Which by the way the city limits are actually bigger than Boston. Your also right about how Pittsburgh has not expanded it's limits. We have a huge suburban area. Which I'm other cities would be part of the city.

300,000 ain't small! 333 (where I'm at) is tiny, 10,000 is small, 100,000 is medium. According to television (LA, NYC & Atlanta of course) everything under 1,000,000 is small! Get real!

Rent isn't "cheap" anywhere! However, rent is VERY INEXPENSIVE in Pittsburgh compared to other similar- sized cities in America!

I lived here most of my life only bcuz i HAD to. Born there and stayed only till parents died. Now living in the most beautiful city in the USA. Phoenix AZ. No more of snow shoveling as I now shovel the sun. No more dull dreary days without seeing sunshine which causes depression. Very happy now and have no desire to ever return to Pit.

I just found this video, I am thinking of moving to the city in a few months, and I don't really understand the kind of "bad areas" everyone is talking about, is it bad like stlouis or New York crime rates or is it more like a bit of crime that is more noticeable? lol sorry if its coming off Rude, I just don't understand, I'm from Seattle so idk lol.

The weather is very depressing half the year. People are not open but clannish. Conversations beyond the weather casts suspicion. Diversity is not heralded. It's racially polarized black vs. white. "Hard guys", basically middle-aged bullies, will stare down strangers. Critical standards are embraced. There is an air of cynicism. People are frugal. It's conservative. It's affordable and beautiful in the summer but, not paradise.

I've lived here all my life, luckily my parents settled here following WW2. Winters can be tough but I like the seasons. We have our share of jagoffs but mostly people are very friendly. Also if you travel from Pittsburgh it's likely you'll find a Steelers bar almost anywhere you go. If we know you are a visitor we will go out of our way to convince you that this is a special place.

@@nunyabidnis5407 I would disagree. People are friendly in the Mon Valley towns and other towns outside of the city. In my recent observations, I've found the city is not friendly like it was during my childhood in the early 2000's. It's becoming rather pretentious

@@jamescoda7297 I grew up south of Pittsburgh in the 60's. Like you said things have changed some. Seems like politeness and common courtesy are slipping away, not just here, but everywhere.

@@nunyabidnis5407 They definitely have changed, and I'm not one to eschew change. However, I often read about the friendly/blue collar trope in relation to Pittsburgh, and I do not observe that nowadays. I do see how the friendly Pittsburgher/blue collar trope is now being used as a marketing strategy (like the commodification of Pittsburghese). The people who were part of that trope (the former steel workers/coal miners/working class) have largely abandoned the area due to the massive steel layoffs of the 1980's. Pittsburgh may have been "friendly" (or whatever that means) back during my childhood, but it isn't now. Also, the influx of wealthy people has made the city rather unwelcoming monetarily as working class Pittsburghers are being priced out of their neighborhoods.

My wife and I grew up in Pittsburgh. That's why we live in another county where taxes are low. Ever increasing taxes is the reason my parents moved from Pittsburgh to another county long ago. That's called voting with your feet. Add to that a crappy public transportation system.Just my opinion.
