Watch the plane scene from The Dark Knight rises. No context don't think of it as a Nolan or a Batman film. And remember that these characters have never been mentioned before. CIA is looking for Bane, captures Bane then never checks. Now while that scene has more plot wholes then Swiss cheese, let's go beyond that. I deplore you to watch that scene and really pay attention then reply to me if you actually think any human being in real life or in drama would say what CIA, and Bane said. Also all of the Jokers Dialog, Batman's. In all fairness I am only referring to his Batman films. While Memento was a classic I felt even that movie felt a bit choppy. I don't blame the actors fully either Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, and even Aiden Gillian have had good performances in their day but in Nolan films it just isn't there. Also the line 'Get this hot head outta here" is ingrained in my mind as historically shit dialog.
@jumpstart55million
@jumpstart55million 6 жыл бұрын
NTMA Productions It was an intense scene..Admittedly it was a bit cartoonish and over the top...But wasn’t close to being bad dialogue...If you think that’s bad dialogue, then you need to watch more films.. And saying Nolan has no understanding of film dialogue is complete nonsense.
@MachineFuckingHate
@MachineFuckingHate 6 жыл бұрын
"Watch the plane scene from The Dark Knight rises." It's kind of unfair to point finger at a specific scene from one film out of an entire filmography of one director and use it as a definitive proof of him lacking certain qualities, don't you think? What about the scene where Alfred leaves Bruce? That's a great scene that shows Nolan's ability to show genuine human emotions in these overstuffed blockbuster movies that, most of the time, are ashamed of sincerity and genuineness. "No context don't think of it as a Nolan or a Batman film. And remember that these characters have never been mentioned before." The thing is, you can't fucking use an action scene from a comic book movie, tell somebody to watch it and ignore the context, and judge it as an ordinary drama or some shit. It's as if I would told you to watch the last 30 minutes of The Avengers and judge its "dialogue" as if you'r watching a Dardanne brothers movie. "Now while that scene has more plot wholes then Swiss cheese, let's go beyond that." Well, sir, let's go beyond that: Your spelling has more holes than an anthill. "I deplore you to watch that scene and really pay attention then reply to me if you actually think any human being in real life or in drama would say what CIA, and Bane said." Yeah, because it's not like we're watching a comic book movie that feature character-archetypes that usually tend to be overly dramatic and unrealistic. I'm pretty sure that, in real life, people don't run around in body armor and capes while fighting guys in Darth Vader masks. Comic book movies will be dramatic and unrealistic by default. The best thing you can do about it is embrace it and make it actually look entertaining and clever. Which is something, I feel, franchises like MCU and DCEU rarely understand. MCU just makes it so apparent, it's no longer entertaining, when they shoehorn so many bad jokes into every single scene just to let us know that we're watching a stupid superhero movie. Nolan was at least not ashamed of making a movie based on superheroes and supervillains. He portrayed all of it without any irony or self-mockery.

His perspective, the way he looks to the cinema is just amazing and inspiring. I always loved cinema and watching movies. To me writing a story is building a world just for yourself. That's why I become angry when I see unrealistic scenes and dialogues in movies. That's why I love his works because he is so realistic. And all I want is one day to get a chance to meet him and get a chance to work with him to learn things from him. Because to me writing a good script and directing it the right way is so important and he is one of the best at it. I wish he had given chance to other nonpro talented directors or screenwriters chance to work with him and teach them things he knows about. Because even if you are good at something it won't matter after you die unless you make it pass to other generations. (sorry for bad eng btw)

I agree. I was completely dumbfounded by all the -idiots- naysayers of Dunkirk, who said they didn't like the movie because they felt no connection to what was going on due of the lack of characterization. I wondered what movie they were watching - they seemed to totally miss the point - Nolan was making the viewer the character, by transporting us into that situation, that experience.
@johnnygoesfast9397
@johnnygoesfast9397 6 жыл бұрын
Fun Guy - Im glad you enjoyed it. And youre right about complainers due to lack of characterization; mainly, cuz of the non traditional storytelling. But, the movie was not very deep, even though, there was great depth of character and aesthetically appealing 14-18mm shots. There was very little emotion or feeling. Not exactly Scheindler's List. Did you see Brigsby Bear, Three Bilboards o/s Ebbing, or Lady Bird I bet you McDonagh wins best Director and Nolan best picture

+Johnny Enright To each their own. Dunkirk is an excellent example of what visual storytelling can accomplish. I was extremely moved by it, and emotionally engaged all the way through. I was more invested in the struggles of characters who I didn't even know the names of than films or television shows that spend hours developing their characters with backstory. That's not to say I haven't seen excellent films/tv doing the exact opposite of Dunkirk, but to say it's a shallow film... I couldn't disagree more.
@johnnygoesfast9397
@johnnygoesfast9397 6 жыл бұрын
SultanofSmash -you're right! Never tell the audience what they know. Any idiot can do voice over narration. And depth of character is implied when done well; rather than, long exaggerated back story. Don't get me wrong, Dunkirk was a great film, but it seemed a little one demensional... You could make a movie within the movie from almost every scene... Like the British officer that waits behind for any Frenchman. The docks before launching into the English sea or the capture of a British Pilot.
@johnnygoesfast9397
@johnnygoesfast9397 6 жыл бұрын
SultanofSmash one d emensional meaning, you get what you see... Kubrick, however, was the master at multidimensional storytelling. Take The Shining. A movie about isolation and falling into Maddness, but also a metaphor for the American Indian genocide. 2001 Space Odesey is about human/artificial intelligence But also about sexual reproduction and power/control

best filmmaker ever in my oppinion. so truly truly great. i hated super hero movies until i saw the batman trilogy. im discusted by the "us vs. them" thing going on in 99% of war movies and then came dunkirk where enemies try to survive together. its so ... human i think is the best word i can find.

Christopher Nolan is probably the only person I worship. Not just admire, not just adore, but worship. He has inspired me greatly, pushed the limits of my imagination, and although I've always wanted to get into films, his work is truly what gave me the biggest motivation to pursue. Now, I've written stories, made a short film, and I'm glad to say it's layered in narrative, inspired only by the very best : Christopher Nolan. Thank you, sir. The world is made wonderful by your presence. ♥️

While I don't always agree with every decision in his films, I trust his vision and respect what he's doing because he's clearly someone with a vision and who knows what he's doing. He's right that, as an artist, you have to stand firm and believe in your vision. It's not an easy thing to do when outsiders seem intent on changing whatever you do into what they think it should be.

For me, Nolan is an extremely satisfying and an extremely frustrating filmmaker at the same time, but his influence on modern cinema is inescapable.

Nikhil Venkatesa could u elaborate on that?
@nikhilvenkatesa

Drids Zzz Sure, although I know I'm treading on thin ice with all the Nolan fans on the Internet. He's extremely satisfying as an image-maker and a filmmaker who provides genuine spectacle at the cinema, and he's a master at evoking an atmosphere and tone in each of his films. But at the same time, his characters are often emotional ciphers for me, and his form can overwhelmingly dominate the story being told. "Dunkirk" exemplifies both the best and the not-so-best of Nolan's work.

+Nikhil Venkatesa How can you complain Nolan's characters? He has such a great gallery of emotionally driven characters.
@SNoone89
@SNoone89 6 жыл бұрын
Tre Drago I might be able to explain. If we take Bruce Wayne as a character, Nolan wrote him as emotionally sparse as possible. That may work when there are so many colourful characters in the batman world around the character but the audience needs to eventually feel close to him and feel his pain at the end. We need to know him on a fundamental level. I rate batman begins the best because of this. It's his best movie in terms of character. This is why Nolan engages in writing aspirational characters rather than expressive ones. Cobb is another example. In inception we find out nothing about Cobb as a man, what are his character traits, his foibles, his flaws. His personality is a blank slate. He's bland. Nolan tries to hide this by giving exposition about the characters past and family but ultimately it's what I find dissatisfying about his movies: I can't relate to the cold people in them. It leaves me emotionally empty but otherwise usually very entertained.

*Internal Sigh* By saying Christopher Nolan is incredible, I am not saying that all other directors are shit. I agree that the other directors mentioned (I have seen one or more movies by each of them) are good (with the exception of Chazelle. I liked , La La Land and Whiplash but I think he is a bit overrated) but I prefer Nolan. I am allowed to have an opinon and a preference, just as you are. Stop being pretentious and rude, Phil.

I get the feeling great directors would make great managers at just about any level. They have hold it all together under insane competing circumstances - to be the quiet centre of the storm guiding it all home. Mind you I also think The Joker from Dark Knight would make a superb project manager or event planner so maybe I'm just full of shit.
@MacGuyver85

No, I agree with you. It’s clear he understands his job as a director isn’t bossing people around, but instead create the correct environment for other people (actors and crew) to thrive in. I think that also explains his dislike for green screens etc. The response/effort you’ll get out of both actors and crew will be more genuine in a (more) real setting. In short, he must be a humble guy that respects the people around him.
