When a working relationship is as critical as the one between pilot and ATC it only makes sense that you experience what it is like on the other side of the mike every now and then. I used to encourage dispatchers to ride along with my team on shift at least once a year for the same reason. It just makes sense. You see it from both sides on a regular basis, and you know this better than most. Kudos to you Kevin...

Its funny Kevin.. about sixty years ago, when I was about 8, my neighbor wanted to thank my dad for helping him with some runway work so he stopped by my house and picked up my 7yr old brother and me (back when that was oK...!!).. and he took us up to his airport and took each one of us on an airplane ride.. about 10 mins each but it was so spectacular .. I remember it to this day.. so you see when I ride with you, its just like I'm 8yrs old again.. such fun.. Kevin, in March of 1994, I flew with a friend out of Manchester (New Hampshire ) airport up to Sanford Maine, then back to Pease Tradeport for a touch and go, and then back to Manchester via Seabrook New Hampshire. The plane we used was a Cherokee Piper and was a little smaller then your Twin Cessna. While I don't have a pilot's license like Jordan, I had a chance on that trip to fly level. When we returned to Manchester (it's a small airport like your home base at Aurora in Illinois) I had a chance to go to the ATC and watch planes take off, and got to see the ATC side of the operations like you were telling Jordan and us watching, that ATC controllers should go flying to see your side of the operation and the pilots like yourself go into the ATC and see how they operate. In 2008, when I worked for a shuttle company here in Georgia, one of the In laws of my boss, worked for the FAA and I had a chance to go into the (then) new Hartsfield /Jackson ATC (just under 400 feet) to see that side of the "controlled chaos" and that at a major airport is very different then yours at Aurora. Loved the video by the way.

Hey Kevin, one thing to check. To get weather and ads-b traffic to stream to foreflight make sure that you are connected to the wifi network of the IFD that has the ads-b in receiver wired to it (not the one that is getting the information over crossync). You should only need to turn the wifi on for that box. Also streaming the weather and traffic is a new feature in the latest update (10.2.3.1) . So without that you will only get GPS position and flight plan transfer. Panel looks awesome by the way!

Agree totally on experiencing the roles of all stakeholders. A long time ago now, I was a full time Aviation Rescue Firefighter & part-time charter pilot/ flight instructor. I’d regularly head up into the tower to say g’day & see what they do & how they do it. I later landed a job with a regional airline, Initially part-time, so was still an airport firefighter. One shift the airline I worked for had a last minute requirement for a copilot on a soon to depart flight. I was working on the big red truck at the time. I rang a colleague, who lived by the airport, who agreed to quickly come in. I literally jumped off the fire truck, changed my blue shirt for a pilots shirt and flew the run. An hour an a half later I was back on the fire truck. The good old days.👍✈️🇦🇺

I like the idea of taking a controller up. That's pretty cool. A buddy of mine and I were in the tower in Longview, TX back in the 80's. I had just gotten my license (in Shreveport) and had done part of my 2nd stop on my long solo cross country there. The controllers were showing us how they could manually tag the various aircraft passing over and through. One aircraft was tagged FLIB. The other tags we could sort out but that one was a head scratcher. Turns out it meant F****** Little Itinerant Bas*** :) I thought it was pretty funny and wondered what my tag was when I landed there lol

That was a great thing to do, and I wish other pilots would do the same, and in reverse as well, all pilots should visit a control tower, watch them in action, as when either knows more about the 'other side' of it, it helps both. A long time ago in a weird situation I got to as military, and the controller was someone who only had a yr. after training, and had never flown before, said it really helped them. Always hopped on the chance to visit towers, and it helped when a friend went into that job also.

Thumbs-up Kevin! It appears you are getting somewhat comfortable with the new Avidyne IFD550 & IFD540 avionics. Hopefully, in the near future we will be able to see them work a little harder via some IFR approaches! :-) Don
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it Don! I went up in my friends Twin Cessna and couldn't even remember how to work the 530W....love the IFD's! In our upcoming Gulf Coast series you'll see them working hard with some nice IMC approaches as well. :)

As an assistant air traffic controller in the UK, I took every opportunity to sit in the jump seat whenever I got the chance. It was an excellent way of knowing what happened on the flight deck. 9/11 put a stop to all of that.
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
That's cool you were able to do that Colin. 9/11 really dampened that for us here in the states as well. It's a shame.

Funny how things change. You mentioned that Jordan actually had his ticket. I took the controller pre-screening exam in the early seventies. At that time unless you had been a military controller a commercial pilot certificate was a prerequisite for candidates. In essence all controllers were pilots.
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, lots of changes since then. Still a lot of former mil controllers and several of the non mil's are pilots but many are not.
@lrodpeterson30465 жыл бұрын
I don't recall any pilot's license to be a prerequisite. When I hired in ('68) there were four or five qualifications, one of which one had to have to be considered. They were: experience as a controller in the military college degree three years work experience in a position which indicated an ability to work airplanes navigator certification instrument rating I got in on the instrument rating. They didn't care whether I held a private, commercial, or ATP (happened to be commercial), it was the instrument rating they were interested in. Which makes sense if you think about it. And by the way, that qualification is more germane for a center controller than a tower controller (even with a TRACon).
@ronwooten69135 жыл бұрын
@@lrodpeterson3046 It was a long time ago. Our memories may be different but the point was that I believe a greater percentage of controllers held pilot certificates then than today. I am not saying that is better or worse just different. I know there are times controllers wish pilots had a better understanding of their jobs and I know there have been times I wished the controller better understood my situation as a pilot. All in all it works remarkably well.

Thanks for the offer Bob! We didn't quite make it that far west on this trip. We started at Key West and ended at Gulfport and then came straight back home from there. We hope to make it out to AGO one of these days. :)

You sound like you know more than the average pilot about ATC, which is great. That's pretty rare, at least at the airports I have worked at. Prior controller?

He said his pilot license has 'lapsed'. You should encourage him to get a flight review and get back in the sky if you haven't already. Great flight. GO DAWGS!!! BEAT FL TOMORROW!!!

I did mention that to him. I know many controllers that let that happen. Guess they lost the passion for it...strange right. :) Go DAWGS!!

Hey Kevin! Really enjoy watching your vids. Like riding along with friends 😀 Excited to hear that you're coming to the Gulf Coast. I live in Ocean Springs,MS (just east of Biloxi) and work as a dealer @ Golden Nugget Casino. Will you be making any public appearances if/when you 2 stop by in Biloxi? Would be great to meet you guys!
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
Shoot Robert!! Wish I would have known this earlier. I originally planned to fly into Ocean Springs but it was IFR at the time so I landed at Gulfport and we ubered to the Golden Nugget for two nights. Would have loved to meet you...maybe next time. :)

@@310Pilot Thanks! Just my luck 🤣 Thought my timing was gonna be off because I wasn't aware that you would be in the area until you posted your last vid taking the controller on your test flight. Just another reason I enjoy watching your posts. Just got home from work and told my 16 yr. old daughter how one of my favorite KZbinrs was not only in town but stayed in the same location where I worked and I was clueless! She laughed and laughed. Shame on her 😀 Anyway...hope you 2 had a great time and enjoyed your trip. If you 2 or the family come again one day I am good friends with the Director of Hospitality @ the Nugget. Maybe I can get him to hook you guys up with a suite and a limo ride the next time. Sorry to have missed you. Have a wonderful day and like Jamie says "Stay safe"

After take-off, what is meant by “climbing blue line”? It’s so interesting hearing you call out what you are doing on t/o and landing. Great videos.
@MichaelLloyd5 жыл бұрын
Single-engine best rate of climb speed-VYSE. It's called "blue line" because this speed is marked on the airspeed indicator with a blue radial line. It's a very important airspeed (for twins). Best rate of climb single engine
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
Glad you're enjoying the videos John!! Blue line is a reference speed in twin engine planes that denotes the best single engine rate of climb. If I lost an engine right after departure close to the ground it is imperative that I not go slower than that as I feather the dead engines propeller to reduce the drag and bank slightly into the good engine while pushing the rudder pedal on the good engine side to reduce the yaw induced drag in order to be able to climb to a safe altitude. Hope that makes sense! :)
@johnlewisb5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, both, for the clear explanations. I just couldn’t and wouldn’t have figured that out.

Cool video! Nice of you to take one of the ATC guys with you. For the first time I noticed that panel mounted to your left. What are all those controls for?
@310Pilot5 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it John! That panel is where the avionics master is, the lighting controls internal and external, my de-ice boots, propeller heat, alcohol windshield and the breakers for all the electronics. :)
