I think this whole song is aimed at both black and white. Notice how he said "I'm black as the moon". The moon is actually white, but in the absence of light, it becomes black, which is a hint that this song is coming from the perspective of both black and white people. Stereotypes of black people are listed throughout, but they wouldn't be able to manifest if it weren't for the evil acts of white people. eventually, if you listen to this song enough, you can interchange Kendrick's identity between both black and white races and the song would still make sense. "I'm black as the name Tyrone and Darius" - these are not black names. These are arbitrary names given to black people by white people who otherwise would have African names (such as my own). Which then reinforces the idea of this song is coming from the perspective of both black and white people. The again, he sais "I'm African American. Came from the bottom of mankind" which is where the first humans originated ever... Bro lets talk about this track, please respond

i don't know if kendrick has explained this in an interview or something, but i read somewhere that when he was involved with gangs he witnessed someone being killed, and felt responsible enough to say that he had essentially killed them himself by involving himself and letting it happen.

How are you confused about the last verse. Trayvon Martin's death was controversial since it was a young unarmed black man who was killed and the Black Community was enraged. So through this songs prospective (Not Kendrick), someone was upset about Trayvon's death but then proceeds to willingly kill a fellow Black man while Gang Banging, hence why he keeps saying that he's a hypocrit.

Great reaction, likes that you can break down a song on first listen and really try to get it, that's where a lot of these other react channels can't do. Just a tip, rewinding like 5-10 seconds after every pause helps the flow and helps you understand the song better, definitely try it. For context, Kendrick grew up in Compton, so he's seen some rough shit. His second album is mainly about what growing up in that city/environment is like. In general his music is known for discouraging gang violence and hate and promoting self-love and respect, so when he says he's the biggest hypocrite, he's saying that he preaches nonviolence in his music but has killed a man blacker than him. In his song maad city he starts a verse saying "If i told you i killed a nigga at 16, would you believe Perceive me to be Innocent Kendrick you seen in the streets With a basketball and some now and laters to eat" Idk if this means he actually killed a dude But either way great song

On the topic of the last verse, I think the gist is that hes a proud african american, so of course he's sad when another african american gets killed for racism, but at the same time he has killed african americans that would be considered "more black" than himself. I feel like Kendricks uses first person but it's also a representation of the black community as a whole.

Prejudice exists, and we all have to deal with varying degrees of it based on many different factors, but you're doing a disservice to yourself focusing on who you think may hate you, and who you think don't want to see you succeed. We, as humans, like to have a scapegoat to explain away the things in life that aren't in our favor that we don't have control over, because it relieves us of the responsibility of acknowledging our role in our misfortunes or inadequacies. This song brings that reality to the forefront, by showing how easy it is for back people to agree with the destructive impact of institutional racism, but hesitate to look at gang culture as being similarly destructive to the black community as well. I am concerned about black success, just as much as any other success. I would say that most white people are like minded in that sense. As long as there are people who are glad to see all people succeed, you should keep them in mind when times make you question your feelings toward any collective. There is good and bad in all collectives of people.

Every song before this is showing his journey to this song, and this one leads into the next, all the way to the outro of the album. This means that some of the content being spoken in this song he learned/gained from the stories in the previous songs. This doesnt only happen with his song, it happens with his albums too. Each journey he go's though in each album is extended into the next ones.
