Sing About Me is a fantastic song, but its a weird one to suggest for newcomers to Kendrick as it references some of his past songs pretty heavily. I'd highly recommend The Blacker the Berry, m.A.A.d City, Swimming Pools and Keisha's Song (< that's the one referenced in the second verse of Sing About Me)

always strive and prosper I don’t think that’s a fair assessment. Kendrick gets the credit he deserves as an artist and musically he does well on the charts. I think the reason you don’t see hardly anything else of this depth is because it’s easier to write surface level garbage. I do think that what you said that has some truth is that a pretty significant number of people don’t want to listen. It’s easy to shut your ears to anything confrontational with significant issues, but I think even those people would be aware of and respect Kendrick’s talent, despite not wanting to listen to his darker tracks. There are reasons why he's one of the best artists right now. 1. His lyrics. The metaphors. The research. The study. Kendrick Lamar is some of the few rappers that really STUDY. what I mean with 'study' is that. For instance, when he talks about Black/white issue, he doesn't go '' FucK you trump, fuck you white ''. He went back the history, the root and merge with the presence. 2. The production. He probably consistently has the best production in the game and that's really, overwhelming to me lmfao. The way he put Jazz, funk and soul into hiphop/rap is clever. He always tries new textures. new instruments. Incredible sampling. 3. The visual. One of few rappers really invest in visuals since their day 1. 4. The live performance. Kendrick Lamar is to me the best performer we have right now next to Beyoncé. . The visual on stage, the energy, the stage owning, the message. He really shows that he loves what he does. 5. This is beyond rap music. His albums are like final essays that you have to do a lot of research and lot of references. Almost no pop artists can do what he does.

I'm sure someone else has informed you of this, but I couldn't find it here: The song prior to this on the album ends with a skit where one of Kendrick's homies dies in a gun fight. The first verse in this song is from the perspective of the brother of the deceased homie. He is speaking to Kendrick the day after about his struggles and how he wants to end it all. The second verse is a respons to the song Keisha's Song on Kendrick's album Section.80. On Keisha's song, we hear of Keisha. Long story short, Keisha's a prostitute that ends up being murdered by one of her clients. The second verse on this album is the sister of Keisha, who is mad at Kendrick for speaking of her sister on Section.80. The third verse is Kendrick reflecting on his choices in life.

Ok so this track is a lil tough to follow without the full context of the album, I’ll try to sum it up as short as I can... the whole album tells a story in one day of Kendrick’s life. Album kicks off with him going to see a girl, she sets him up to get robbed. Him and his friends come back for revenge and one of his friends dies in the process. This track is right after that event where they’re regretting what happened and seeking guidance. If you guys want a straight banger listen to M.A.A.D City, that’s something you can rock out to, much higher replay value.

Ive always looked at logic as a "fan rapper" by the way hes so directly influenced by his contemporarys, its not inherently a bad thing, he does it well I guess, but he doesn't have a distinctive sound

He grew up listening to the rappers many of us did and obviously there is massive influence there - his sound is distinctive because its an amalgam of many rap styles which he takes hold of and employs variously throughout his songs, thats what makes it distinct. I think Logic will continue to evolve though, and I completely agree with your assessment of him as a fan rapper - every rapper is a fan rapper for the most part as they were influenced by someone else to express themselves through music. The people who influence them can often be seen within their work and eventually there will be an evolution (if he is as talented as I think he is) into their own sound. Or he could just continue sounding like others and not evolve.

First of all, really cool that you listen to the viewers, although sometimes it's better to just not pay attention to some of the 'demands' lol. Gotta find a balance. Secondly, I don't know about Logic, but Kendrick is the type of rapper you have to explore and dissect because his songs are so layered. I know it sounds vague, but he generally talk about life in all his music, whether it's experiences from his youth in the streets of Compton, struggle with guilt, black culture and issues, vices of fame and success, struggle to maintain sanity, wisdom and more. This song is a true masterpiece. Logic does well in Under Pressure (my favorite song of his) but this was the obvious inspiration for that and it is something greater entirely. This song has the greatest double meaning in one line that I think is so impressive. Kendrick says "cursing the life of 20 generations after her soul. Exactly what would've happened if I ain't continue rappin or steady bein distracted by money, drugs and four-fives I count lives, all on these songs. He's saying .45 as in guns, continuing the line from before because gang violence would have doomed him to his situation. He's also saying four (wait) five lives. The song references the death of four people and kendrick counts their lives on this track, but no wait it's five because himself is included. He is/was the same as the people and rap is the only thing that separates them.

The idea that this song is inspired by Stan.... that is truly insightful. I've been a fan of Kendrick for many years and never had that thought. I think you're definitely right about that on some level. Both songs are separated into distinct parts, each part conveying a progression of the overall story and a unique emotion from someone the artist has interacted with in real life. I really recommend listening to m.A.A.d City it is an incredible song, in fact one of the best ever made in my opinion but a few other options would be The Blacker the Berry, How Much a Dollar Cost, or if you want to be more daring then listen to the song “u” it is a heart breaking song with a very odd vibe but extremely powerful

I just wanted to mention that Jon pointed out that he felt like something was "coming" near the end. What's amazing about this album is that all the songs are connected and they play out a story of a day(maybe a bit longer?) of Kendrick Lamar growing up. Kind of like a movie. Almost all the songs have snippets of people talking (like in this song) that help piece the story together. You guys should consider doing an album review video for this project. I'm sure you guys won't regret it! Amazing channel btw!
