India, China and Pakistan all want territory from another. But it’s a pursuit doomed to fail as they can’t get it without annihilating the other.

Sorry, Sekhar Gupta. you've gone off the subject. As a standalone article, not linked to the PM's Ladakh visit, you do have a case. But the Ladakh visit was a specific one; to bolster morale in difficult times. There was no ambiguity about the expansionist here. You quoted Global Tomes as having said:" We have 12 countries; we have settled borders with all but two.And India is one. " Sanctimonious liars. There forcible annexation of the South China Sea means they have territorial disputes even with countries that have no common border.China is India's enemy. and we must recognize it as such.

@@canucklehead2697 And intentionally excluding sea disputes is just misleading. As it stands currently, China has border disputes with 21 neighboring countries. Global Times was categorically wrong. *Why must you build up such false equivalences, SG?* What India is protesting is the unilateral change in status quo at the border, by the Chinese. This is their way of arm-twisting India into coming to the table on border negotiation & coerce it into an agreement in favorable terms to themselves. This use of force instead of using the diplomatic channels to settle disputes with your neighbors is what PM Modi referred to as "expansionism". This is something the Chinese are doing with many of its neighbors at the moment. Did the Indian Army incur into Chinese or Pakistani occupied territories to enforce Indian claims? Modi is also trying to build up international consensus along these lines.

@@afaqh2356 That's not meaningful. The Chinese have been building border infrastructure on their side of contested lands long before Aug 2019. India is doing this rapidly very recently, to blunt this Chinese advantage. It's well within its rights & the Chinese-set precedent to do so. Also, I don't think you know what annexation means. It's taking land from other polities by force. When in 2017, Pak declared Gilgit-Baltistan (a disputed territory) as its fifth province, it cannot be called "annexation", can it? Does the Chinese action have something to do with Article 370 scrapping? Maybe. Or maybe they're just posturing to show resilience in the face of covid-19 (to both domestic & international audiences). Either way, this reckless & fatal move cannot be justified using India's internal actions within territory it currently holds. The Chinese have been issuing stapled visas to people in Arunachal Pradesh since 2012. Imagine the backlash this should have generated from India, if it followed the Chinese way - the medieval ways of expansionism...

@@jojobabok9373 This is all a real mess. Borders & areas are judged historically, & history is full of wars & conquests. Who is right & who is wrong? Kashmir, Laddakh, Gilgit & Chitral were all captured by Sikhs. In the Amrithsar treaty the areas were handed over to the Dogras. Gilgit & Chitral were never a part of Kashmir. So in 1947 the Gilgitis declared independence from Dogras. The Sikhs had suffered defeat in Tibet. Had they conquered Tibet also, then people would be calling Tibet also a part of Kashmir. :)

@UCLGvkAh-CR2BUBVJOTCh0eQ Your understanding of India is incorrect. Its not just a line drawn by the brittish. But thats OK because you are not from this country. India's tragedy is that most Indians do not know what India means thanks to 70+ years of congress / socialist rule. Bharat / India was a civilization that is mentioned in "OUR" history - eg. the mahabharat and ramayan - which covers the land from Gandhar (afganisthan) to Manipur and from Kashmir to TN. They werent all one kingdom but the people in them were all sons / daughters of Bharat - It was one civilization. 100 years ago this was considered history. But the british and then congress turned it into mythology. The congress had to do that to remain in power. Now obviously Pak and Afganisthan are no longer part of India. But the importance of Kashmir to India (and it's soul) is not easy to convey. The present day India is not different from the Bharat of old. Each state is like a separate kingdom with a different culture but all connected to the idea of Bharat.

I think we all Indians just have to ask ourselves two questions. that while the land of Gilgit-Baldistan, Aksai Chin is ours, are the people living there think of themselves as Indians. And if not, are we then ready to force them to do so. And if you can't or don't want to answer these questions and still want that land then we are expansionist.

I have two points, which I wish you will clarify for me. 1. Expansionism principles of PRC as per my view has changed ( may be case to case basis); very gradual and systematic expansion of territories bit by bit over a very long time period ( and it is also noted that PRC always try to keep their claims afresh and alive at all fronts whatsoever). 2. Even if some nation doesn't wish to be in a dispute and wants for a settlement it may not be applicable at a larger context as it will instigate much larger claims all over that nation (from people of different ideologies) and from neighbouring nations, so I think it's better fight and keep an unwanted territory than losing much more areas.

The Idea of world peace is cooperation and coexistence. Thats the reason UN was found. Their is nothing right or wrong in world politics and nobody win in a war. As the moat famous war phase says, "One the dead see the end of the war." We certainly cant stop or control other nations from following expansionism there are various other ways to counter these step and not going for a full war. The problem arises where these superpowers becomes unfair, then the UN fails. This was the reason of both the world wars, a nation or the leader of the nation wanting to expand. Then whats the solution? The solution is as the poeple of the nation we shouldn't support anything like this, be is Indian, Chinese, Pak or any other nation. What we should be fighting for is a digital and social liberty in a particular nation so that the people can be the judge of the right and wrong. In case of china, its doesn't exists and in India even after having the tools we cover our eyes with prejudice and fake nationalism. Whole china is not wrong, its the Republican party there doing and manipulating their people and causing border issues to save their ass and so is being done in India. Nationalism is not sugar coating facts, nationalism is actually thinking about the development of the nation. So what you said is correct that peace needs cooperation but you missed on the point that war is a tool for it. You cant ever win a battle without a loss. The question is, is the loss worth?

If we lose a sliver today, it will be a district or a provincee tomorrow. China has much bigger hunger for expansionism than Pakistan. They are claiming land and airspace in international waters. As one noble man once said "duniya loony toon nahi hain ke jitna pyaara din utne pyaare hum" we cannot accept what other countries have to say about our land that they occupy but that also doesn't mean we should go on an all out campaign to recapture these territories. We should just make sure that if and when we have the opportunity to reclaim the territories (through peaceful means, through diplomacy) we should do it and to do that we should never give up the claims and never change our map. I'd spend ten thousand hours and ten thousand more Oh, if that's what it takes to learn that sweet heart of yours And I might never get there, but I'm gonna try If it's ten thousand hours or the rest of my life I'm gonna love you (ooh, ooh ooh, ooh, ooh)

As a pragmatic Indian who wants India to be an economic and military super power, I concur with Admiral Arun Prakash's views in indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/india-china-border-stand-off-line-of-actual-control-galwan-valley-6474725/. There are lots of comments out here which questions why expansionism applies to India ? The underlying assumption here is that PoK and Aksai Chin were incorporated within India peacefully and with the consensus of all the stakeholders involved. Let's look at J & K conflict. J & K, back in 1947, was a Muslim majority state rules by a Hindu King - Hari Singh. As per the two nation theory, to which Nehru was also party to, J & K should have been with Pakistan. However, India managed to keep it to itself, by convincing Hari Singh, despite he disliked Nehru. We have to be contend with the fact, despite the popular wave and tide, India owns the majority of J & K. Pls. read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmir_conflict. Secondly, on the issue of Aksai Chin, India never developed any infra nor deployed any troops there to defend it besides claiming it. This was the same land that Nehru once said, "not a blade of grass grows". Such was the apathy of the Indian administration toward it until China annexed it. Also, historically Aksai Chin was part of Xinjiang, a Chinese province. It was erroneously included as part of Kashmir when the Johnson line was drawn in 1865. But it is the Chinese who have been administering the region since 1878. There are lot of scholarly material and Wikipedia articles on J & K conflict and Aksai Chin. It is one thing to make claims as "own territory" and quite another to ensure you have the deployed enough administrative and military machinery to protect and defend it.

This sane message was very much needed.❤ Those, who think that casting off irrendtist tendencies is a weakness, actually stand in no good moral ground to oppose Chinese or Pakistani irredentism. Only if we Indians totally appreciate the goal of maintaining stability of national borders and constant peace (in marked contrast with the medieval or early modern day concept of constant warfare with the neighbours for gaining territory) adopted post World War II and remain totally committed to these, we stand in a very strong moral ground to castigate Chinese or Pakistani expansionism. We cannot afford to see a war-torn world. If a war ensues in which our people die and our economy crumbles - no matter which side gains a few square miles of territory or a few thousand population - then all our internal politics, development strategies etc become useless.

Though these areas belonged to Kashmir, the people didn't like Kashmiris and didn't want them to be identified with Kashmirs, they wanted to join Pakistan. There would have been blood bath if it was integrated with India. It was the mess created by British, so they thought that it would be in their best interest if Gilgit baltistan remained separate, if you still see, this region doesn't have Constitution of Pakistan, it has remained that way thought the people want them to be integrated with Pakistan there's a lot of opposition from Azad Kashmir activists against this. You need to come out of Indian perspective and think to get to the root of this issue, end of world War 2, cold War etc, even Aksai Chin has a similar blunder created by British

@@nisachar00 I've read tonnes of books and articles from various perspectives. But in this issue, the timing of the mutiny and subsequent coup clears a lot things. The partition happened in August of 1947, but the coup occured when Hari Singh annexed whole of Kashmir with india when Pakistan attacked Kashmir, you may note that Pakistan didn't attack Gilgit Baltistan, which means that they were already on board with them with the coup. This is part of the reason why Hari Singh didn't annex Kashmir with India, because he was a non Muslim ruler in a Muslim majority province

I absolutely agree that what territory we have is what we got and draw the boundary because if we continue with the military situation(granted it's necessary in the current scenario) it'll only worsen the mood of the local people. If we continue with the development of education institutions and job market with huge growth potential in local and foreign tourism in J&K the tourism industry will boom like never before and eventually people will stop fighting over where they want or don't want to live whether due to External or Internal influence and start focusing on making there lives prosperous. There's a difference between realism and fantasia. I'm sure whoever reads this may agree or disagree with this view but they must have at some point thought about this scenario where we don't need to spend 2.4% of our gdp on military out of necessity and more because we can without thinking about cutting costs somewhere else.
