I am celebrating 10 years of the day I discovered Dave Ramsey on the radio, on I-10 as I took a road trip and drove west from Fort Stockton back to El Paso. Friday July 3, 2009 was the day I heard him for the first time, and I was like, who is this guy talking about money and personal finances? I had never heard of a radio show like that until I just came across it at random as I was flipping through the radio channels.

I've been independent for a decade, thanks in part to Dave's teachings. The important thing to remember is that it also comes with responsibility. I've had many situations where I had to make a decision where I really didn't want the responsibility. Once you give in and realize it's all your responsibility, the easier life is. It's hard to see in the moment, but later you realize that it gives your life meaning. Embrace your responsibilities!

I cancelled my Discover card yesterday. While I never paid interest on it, I realized after following Dave for awhile, I no longer had a need for it, nor did I ever. The agent was very nice, well spoken, and of course, tried to convince me to stay. She said "We will always be here for you if or when you want to come back." It's a sad world we live in when a credit card company is making statements like that. Nothing but lies.

I like my Discover card, it gives me cash back on my regular, budgeted purchases and I don’t pay interest. I like DR, but I think there’s a smart way to use credit cards. It’s the dumb people that subsidize my rewards.

Keep at it. I was $80K student debt at 23. Kept paying it. Went back and did my MBA. Kept paying it. Was clear of all student debt at 31. All up paid over $110K. Ironically at the same time I bought my first house at 31 because I had managed to save $100K deposit (there was a nuance as to why saving vs paying student debt which is why I did both). I'm now 36 and much better off again. I can't tell you the actual figures. But I can tell you for every dollar you pay off on student loan debt - you get back 10 fold in 10 years, and by my calculation 30+ fold over the span of your life. So imagine you are saving $330,000! Because you really are.

Ramsey, why do you say that we should use a debit card instead of a credit card? If your debit card gets stolen then its really hard to cancel the transactions the thief made. However, if your credit card gets stolen it's not that hard to cancel the transactions. So, why do you say that we should use a debit card instead of a credit card? And if you didn't say that debit cards are better than credit cards then I'm really sorry I am a new subscriber. If the latter is true then I want to know what you feel about which is better, credit cards or debit cards.
