I don't know what it is, but there seems to be something about average/decent athletes that translates well to developing superstars. I don't watch basketball, but I watch a lot of combat sports and the absolute best coaches always seem to be people that were good enough to compete professionally, but far from elite level. Hey the guy is talented enough to play in college but going pro is a different level. I feel for him it’s hard shoes to fill. I was in a similar situation. My dad played in the MLB as a journeyman on MLB teams and I was a great baseball player but not at his level. When I was in middle school and high school and if I didn’t hit a home room every at bat people would say “oh I thought you were supposed to be good.” I was good and still played at a major D1 program but I did not have my dad size, talent, or passion. My grandparents told me my dad was obsessive with baseball would throw a tennis ball against a brick wall for house. Would ride his bike to the batting cages, would watch games and analyze players swing, would beg kids in their neighborhood to play, would make my grandfather pitch to him, jog the gym, constantly watched what he ate. I did not go to those lengths of obsession. I practiced hard but not in my off time. With the exception of rare talents it takes a work ethic unlike no other to play at a pro level and stay there. Some guys I played in college with played in the MLB and they were just naturally gifted along with a passion and work ethic that could not be matched. My dad told me in high school to be realistic with my goals. He was open about it day 1 saying it will be difficult for me to go pro and that heart is only one piece of the equation but some of it is natural talent and genetics.

I was training like crazy at pro level in Europe, it was very systemic, twice a day and I noticed that my stamina had limits, my shooting even with taking 200-300 threes after morning practice never reached 35% average in games. To be a pro player at NBA level it requires both phisical and neuro tallents (extreme eye hand cordination and high game IQ) the best thing that could happen to aspiring athlete is to fin out early if he is cut for pro level or not. My recomendation is not to train like crazy, but train normal and see if tallents shine and if tallent is obvious then pushing to pro level makes sense. If tallents ate not there focus on another career and just enjoy the badketball without any expectation

I mean he’s a freshman coming off a major heart injury. Even before the injury, people that have been paying attention knew he wasn’t gonna be a 1 and done player in college. He has a lot of the intangibles to be a solid role player in the NBA, but was always definitely gonna need more than 1 year to develop in college, and especially so after the heart injury. He only had 2 turnovers in 46 minutes in 2 games against Cal this year tho so not sure how you got the turnover prone takeaway from watching those games lol
