It’s been three weeks since we set up these adult red wiggler bins. Let’s check and see how many I have.

I am a new worm grower but it’s for casting for my plants I only had about 50 pure red wiggles. To speed things up I ordered 500 from a grower here in Canada. There were small. As they grow lo and behold I got some long worms that when I shine the light on them they look blue and shinny fast and very active. I do not like mixed worms.

They were probably blue worms. Some people like them and that’s OK for me personally, I don’t like working with them.

Throw a small C clamp on the front of the mortar bin so the wood roller track doesn’t fall in.

Yes, very thorough detailed showing of how you do things. I commented over on your other one also. Ive been worming for about 10 yrs , have thousands of worms , but never thought about the breeding process.

Can I make a suggestion? Use a wire hanger and make hooks that connects to mortar tray using the lip of the tray to hold it fast.

Excellent video. Making a sifter like you are using, but making side boards a couple of inches longer with a notch to sit over the catch bin so it doesn't keep slipping off. Easy and fairly inexpensive to fabricate at home. Thanks for your informative videos and instruction.

My screen is coming tomorrow so I can build one of those. I’ve already made the base to fit my mortar trays (small size), I just need to make the frames for the screens. I don’t have lots of tools so I couldn’t make the cutout that makes it stable, I’ll probably put a scrap piece of wood at the bottom to help hold it in place…if needed, or add short legs for when I don’t have an empty tray. If it stands on its own then I can just do it over a tarp. I’m using pallet wood that I got free. Those whole thing will cost me $55 (cost of screen and wheels) with enough extra screen to make 5-6 more! I’ll probably make a couple extra and wait to see if people will buy them. I definitely wouldn’t ship them, that’s $$$. They aren’t the same as Meme’s, just similar idea, so I feel comfortable selling them. I wouldn’t sell them if they were identical. Thanks for sharing! BTW, my worms love your chow recipe!!! I added 1/8 part of dried molasses, I think I could add a touch more but this seems to work really well so far and I don’t have to worry about the molasses water going bad. If I have tea I’ll spray the top with it, otherwise I just use water. “Roxanne You don't have to put on the red light” -Sting They look like a live brain ;D

@TheGardenAndWormLady
@TheGardenAndWormLady Жыл бұрын
Hi! How are you? I am from Jersey but we live in Indiana now I actually bought that box. They’re not cheap so I would suggest building one yourself. It’s just four pieces of wood with a quarter inch mesh. If you go to Home Depot or Lowe’s they will cut the wood for you the mesh they sell it in rolls on Amazon but I’m sure they’ll have it at Home Depot or Lowe’s and you can staple it underneath. You can add the little wheels but I’ve seen people use it without the wheels also

I made my own sifter which is 30" x 24 1/2 " with 1/4" screening which I just use my hands to sift . I like the setup you have to slide it back and forth. I hadnt considered even trying to sell as yet I just make 3 5 gal buckets for my family to use but may have to consider it. On my last harvest on my bottom tray of factory 360 there were a lot of babies. I hadnt been seeing that. Where do you get your tubs from? Steve

The bottom piece of the wooden thing has wheels so it makes it very handy. I’ve ordered those tabs online sometimes on Amazon but I also see them in the big box stores. They are 20 x 15 x 5. On my other warm channel is where I do all my towers. youtube.com/@thecompostingwormlady9982

I I am really enjoying your videos. Thank you for sharing what you do. I do have a question. The 250 worms that you started out with? How much do you think they weighed? They didn’t weight a pound, did they? Was just trying to figure out if you got more grown worms in 21 days? Or you just fed adults for the 21 days for the cocoons and babies? And ended up with the same amount of worms. Thank you in advance for your help
@TheGardenAndWormLady
@TheGardenAndWormLady 3 ай бұрын
250 worms of red wigglers is usually a quarter pound. I start out with adult worms and I feed them and fatten them up. I harvest cocoons every 21 days but sometimes the babies hatch so I do a lot of hand harvesting for that reason, they are very little when they’re born and delicate, then I take those babies and divide them up and start raising them into adulthood. It takes a while to get this going. If you do it right and the ideal condition. Takes a lot of practice. I have made tons of mistakes in the 22 years I’ve been doing this You’re at the mercy of your bed and knowledge. Also, they are a livestock sometimes they are stubborn.😅

Do you keep any long term records about the bins, like weight, bedding amount, feeding, etc? I thinking about maybe starting to do something like that just to keep track of things, but don’t know if others do or not.

Is the main benefit of separating cocoons that you can hatch them with the heat mat? Limiting population in the breeder bins? Would love to hear more about your thinking in the overall system. Thanks for sharing all this :)
@TheGardenAndWormLady
@TheGardenAndWormLady Жыл бұрын
You are correct that is the reason for separating them. But if you use worms for regular composting, it shouldn’t matter.

I'm curious what don't you like about the blue worm?
@TheGardenAndWormLady
@TheGardenAndWormLady Жыл бұрын
I like the blue worms to use just for composting let’s say read my kitchen. I don’t have any because they have such a bad reputation and 99% of the people that want red wigglers want them pure . With that being said, blue worms can be difficult to work with at times. Most warm farmers, consider them to be pains in the butt.

I'm a friendly. Stop my bull. My goal would be to put an ad in this local paper saying worm castings for sale at Citizen in Community prices. (I'm not in it for the $ necessarily). I am an Eagle Scout/ modest. Our properties are similar. If Sasquatch tapped on my glass door running from humans, I'd let [it] in to hide, offer [it] human soup, and not chirp a word! My worm farm is out of any human control, I just feed it! Alein tail.
