Fighting games are about four things at their core 1. Understanding why any and everything happens. 2.timing 3. Spacing 4. What character are you playing? How are they meant to play? What is their win condition and tools? You need to be good/have a strong foundation in those four concepts(and many more actually), and then you can be good. To get better at those things Play ranked or just playa against people When you lose or win, take what you lost to training mode. Recreate the situation and figure out how to deal with it. This is also where drills come in practice reacting to things with the answers you found so you don't have to think as much when that situation comes up in-game. Watch your replays and make a note of everything that gave you problems. Take it to training mode and do what I said before. Fighting games on the surface seem like an action game, which they are, but their more a strategy game. Fighting games are poker and blitz chess. Grinding/just playing without thoughts about how to improve gets you nowhere. if you w want to get better you must be thinking and studying to fix problems. Problems don't go away if you don't actively fix them. Griding mindlessly only works to a point. Once that point is reached you have to make a conscious effort to practice and study to get better because other wise you won't. Last thing when you're feeling discouraged or angry at the game, just take a short break or think of losing even if it's to stupid stuff as a tax. Taxes are inevitable don't stress but still work on fixing that problem. At their core fighting games are about problems solving if something is giving your problems understand why and fix it everything I told you before will help do that.

I've been playing fighting games for years, and I think my favorite thing in any and every fighting game is when a character just clicks and suddenly you understand how they flow. I treat fighting games like music, every character has a certain rhythm to them and every rhythm is a little different (or a lot different depending on the game)
@homerunboi10 күн бұрын
There's also recognizing what "style" of play you take on whilst playing your character. This is decently deep into the learning process, as it's essentially taking what you've learned and applying it based on what you in particular are good at with this character, and eventually will come around to covering your weaknesses. Sometimes it'll be enough to bring down the rate of mistakes or the level of punishment you'll get for said mistakes. In some cases, they can outright become a strength, which is scary to people who try to exploit what they think is a weakness mid-set. Anime as hell, yes, but extremely effective!

I'd say learning a Bread n Butter combo should be one of the first things you do after finding a character that works for you. A lot of people lose motivation because they can't stand sitting in practice mode for hours learning frame data. It's not strictly necessary. You can find a character, test their range and and moves and find a simple combo then jump in. Sure it means you'll lose a lot because you're incomplete, but then you look at how you lost and make yourself better. Was you defense weak? Did you keep getting counter hit? Did you keep getting thrown? Did their jumping throw you off? Or did you just not understand when it was safe to attack? You take these questions back to training mode and figure it out, then repeat. If online is too intimidating, it's okay to play arcade mode to see everything in motion. It's a relatively low stress environment that will let you practice converting stray hits into combos, getting a grasp of you weak points, and give you an idea of what to expect of the character when you play online. Hell, get one of your friends to play with you. That'll give you experience fighting real people and learning how unpredictable it can be. What I've learned in my many years playing fighting games is everyone learns these things differently and figuring out how you learn is just as important as figuring out how you like to play. Some people don't like labbing and some prefer it. Don't think there's only one way to learn.

Remembering to have fun is SUPER IMPORTANT and an eternal struggle. There will be days when you wonder what you are doing, trash talking yourself, losing streaks, etc. Fighting game are naturally very stressful, and you WILL lose your way if you play long enough. Always remember that it's a game, you are playing for fun, and while you should "never give up," there are definitely times when you have to take a step back. Its like playing an instrument, you can get rusty, and coming back can be difficult, but once you get back you will have a fresh perspective and go farther than you did before. I've broken a TV with a thrown controller before (Dragonball FighterZ is a difficult, filthy, degenerate game but man is it fun sometimes), but I should have recognized how angry I was getting and stopped before it got that bad.

I might need to apply some of this advice myself. I’m currently learning how to play as Goldlewis in Guilty Gear Strive. He has a move called Behemoth Typhoon, which is done with a half-circle in any direction + Heavy Slash. It’s a tricky move to do, but I know that it has some serious combo potential. Side note, I learned that a lot of overdrive attacks in GGST make you invincible on startup. If you get knocked down, you can input an overdrive and activate it while you’re getting back up, which is a great way to punish overly aggressive opponents.
@christianguest6310 күн бұрын
Something to note is similar to fromsoft games like Elden Ring the difficulty just makes pulling it off just that much sweeter. There’s nothing quite like sweating over a combo so hard and then after hours maybe days of grinding you pull it off in a real match. Even if you lose you will feel like you won it’s impossible to describe.

Different types of characters in fighting games: Combo breaker: These characters typically have faster attacks and have several hits in their moveset. Combo breakers are focused on (you guessed it),chaining combos and getting as many hits in as possible. If you can memorize a set of moves in a combo or if you can juggle, this is your type. Projectile maniac: Guns, throwables, or anything ranged is considered as a projectile. Use projectiles to distance yourself from your opponent while attacking Support/Ex-support: Buffs and debuffs can truly turn a game around (especially if you can stack statuses). If you don’t like learning combos or if you’re lacking and don’t want to change your style, then you might want to try this out. Heavy hitters: On the complete opposite side of the combo spectrum are heavy hitters. These are the types of characters who have slower (yet more powerful) attacks. Think of them as the “glass cannon” of the fighting game world. Blocks and evades are CRUCIAL if you play as the heavy hitter. *BONUS!* Use the meta, but don’t spam it: As a person who is anti-meta, I sometimes *have* to use it if there’s no other option. Sure, I can spam Sheeva, Abigail, and Broly all day… but I don’t do it. It’s not only frustrating for my opponents, but it also makes me a weaker player. Thank you for reading and GLHF

The important part i got from this is take breaks and have fun. Losing is part of playing fighters but if you don't take a break from time to time those loses will eat you up. So take a break and when you're ready to take online go for it and also taking a break and getting back online you'll notice you are playing better than with no breaks in between.

Don't rush to enter rank, its best to get a friend who's also new so you can verse each other. Losing online to random can really great on you and versing bots isn't terrible but won't get you ready to verse real players. Also don't compare yourself to others or think a character with a high rank will make you good. If you see that idk kirby is top tier and then you lose as kirby you'll just feel worse about your self. And don't compare yourself to other players experience is the most important thing.
