They have a long history. I imagine Jeff Rawle and Jennifer Metcalfe are probably good friends in real life because they've worked together several times over the years but onscreen, their characters despise each other. However, their chemistry isn't as good as Silas' chemistry with Lynsey Nolan. Unlike Mercedes, Silas respected Lynsey as a worthy opponent and was actually fond of her in his own twisted way. He was even shown to miss her when he said that Lindsey Butterfield was "not even worthy of her name".

Even though Silas constantly tried to kill Mercedes, he unintentionally became her psychiatrist. She talked about things with him that very few people knew. And as much as Silas hated to admit it, he found Mercedes entertaining. Probably why he never killed her right away, he wanted to prolong the enjoyment which was inevitably his downfall. Truly the best villain in Hollyoaks history.
