I traded my 2019 Bolt for a 2022 Bolt EUV as a result of the battery fires/recall. Even though the EUV is a better car in almost every way and I was trading the 2019 specifically because of the battery fires, I was still quite sad to see it go. I drove 35k miles in that car in about 26 months. The charging speed does make it a slower road trip car but it is still fully capable of doing it, as you’ve shown.

I greatly enjoyed my 2017 Bolt Premium I owned from Jan 2018 to April 2021. I leased it. Ended up not driving the last year, so I didn't see the value in keeping it. Finally replaced it in May 2022 with a Polestar 2 thanks to your reviews. I would highly recommend the Bolt with no reservations. New, used, whatever. Mine was called the TTARDIS because TARDIS was taken, cuz it was bright blue, and bigger on the inside.

I really enjoyed your five year (and final) review of Artemis. Curiously, I'm one year into ownership of my 2017 Bolt Premier. I also really enjoy the Bolt and it's even better with it's new battery. And yes, Nikki, it's way more than just a city car. Best of luck with your new Lightning and I'm looking forward to future videos about it. Ian (Toronto)

Glad to hear you had a good run with Artemis and that she will now go to some other good home. I have a very similar cajun red 2017 LT and that car has also been great. I was just over 100k when I got my battery replaced (so larger pack and another warranty) and have put on about 15k since then. Knocking on wood, no major issues with my Bolt so far. Looking forward to the next 100k. Hope the F-150 Lightening works out as well for you.

I know the feeling, Nikki. I will soon need to sell my 2008 Mazda5, and I'm really going to miss it. I've had it since it was new (14 years!), and it's been the best vehicle I've ever owned, bar none. Despite our vehicles being 'just cars", somehow we sometimes develop an emotional attachment to them. My Mazda5 has taken me camping with my husband numerous times, to car shows in Toronto, to my husband's funeral, and for 7 years since he died, just around London and southern Ontario, Canada. I have just shy of 200,000 kms (320,000 miles), and it's never left me stranded. It is in many memories, but the memories are mine. The car is just a "thing", when it comes right down to it. Even when the Mazda5 goes, I will still have the memories.

HI NIKKI, HOLY CRAP!! GOING FROM THAT TINY BOLT TO A LIGHTNING?? TALK ABOUT MUTT AND JEFF!! ( Hoss and Little Joe?? David and Golith?? ) I THINK THERE'S MORE SPACE IN THE LIGHTNING'S "FRUNK" THAN IN THE BOLTS WHOLE BACK SEAT!! OH, AND HAKKAPLITTA'S ARE GREAT SNOW TIRES; (yeah, it does snow a lot in Findland, I've heard!! ) I HAD A SET MYSELF!! BUT I WAS WONDERING HOW MUCH THEY EFFECTED YOUR BATTERY RANGE?? AND IT LOOKS LIKE YOU PAID ABOUT $34,000.00 BETWEEN THE 36 PAYMENTS, AND THE BUYOUT, BUT I DIDN'T HEAR IF YOU SAID HOW MUCH YOU PUT DOWN ON THE LEASE?? I KNOW THERE WILL BE A LOT MORE TO COME ABOUT YOUR NEW LIGHTNING, BUT ASSUMING YOU'RE NOT GETTING THE BASE XL MODEL, WHICH I BELIEVE IS ONLY SOLD TO COMMERCIAL FLEET BUYERS, I'M GUESSING THAT, IF THE LIGHTNING HAS THE XLT PACKAGE AND MAYBE THE LONG RANGE BATTERY, YOUR COST MUST BE ABOUT DOUBLE THE COST OF YOUR BOLT!! OH WELL, AT LEAST YOU SAID YOU WERE BUYING THE LIGHTNING, NOT LEASEING IT, SO YOU'LL BE GETTING THE $7500.00 DISCOUNT, I GUESS, AND I ASSUME A NICE, GREEN STATE LIKE ORRY-GINN MUST HAVE AN EV INCENTIVE, TOO?? SO DON'T SHED TOO MANY MORE TEARS OVER YOUR "BELOVED" BOLT; THINK OF ALL THE FUN YOU'RE GONNA HAVE BLOWING THE DOORS OFF ANY GAS ENGINED PICKUP TRUCKS (and most sports cars?? ) INCLUDING THE RAPTOR!! CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT.

Well, I'm at 92.5k miles on my 2017 Bolt. I have a huge commute that it does exceptionally well with and I put miles on it at about 3,500 a month. I am thinking of doing a review when it hits 100,000 with the good and the bad. It could be that I'm fat and older now, but I have choice words for the accountant and engineer that designed these seats.

I agree with the comments on the interior quality/appearance compared to the original price, that was always something that drove me away from that Bolt. Seriously considering one with the new reduced price for 2023! Glad to hear it has held up well. The Bosch HEPA filters are awesome! I’ve used them in my Chevy Volt, VW e-Golf, and Prius Prime and I’ve been very happy with them. Much better than the original filters.

I love you telling us all about the car. It's really good to know their history. I had a 2020 LT Bolt and it was great 😃. I was able to trade it in for a new 2021 Premier, with the new battery. I really love this car. Her name is T'Pol. We had her for 2 months now and already have over 4k on her. We do many small trips of 288 and 750 miles. She has been a work horse. Much better on road trips than our Leaf. Being retired and now on a fixed income we hope she will be around for 10 years or more. Thanks for all the videos about yours. It is one of the reasons we got T'Pol.

I leased a the first generation 2015 VOLT (not Bolt), then leased a 2018 Mitsubishi PHEV Outlander, and then in 2021 I bought a Gen 2 Volt that was coming off of somebody else’s lease. I have to say that my current Volt is, by my lights, the perfect electric car, given the still relative small number of rapid chargers around the country and the state of batteries to withstand (or even accept) vey high wattage recharging without drastically reducing the life of the batteries. I get 65-70 miles per charge in the summer and 45-50 miles in the winter on a charge of the batteries. I very seldom need to go further than a single charge of the batteries, so 95+% of my total miles are done on battery power. But on those once or twice a year trips beyond battery-only range, I have a gasoline engine that allows me to drive as far as I need with a stop every 300-350 miles to refill the tank. Recently we took a trip to visit my wife’s brother. The driving distance was 638 miles with 12 hours of driving (though it took 14 1/2 hours in total because we we are humans who have biological imperatives). We were able to make the drive there and back in a single day largely because we could continue by just finding a gas station. I understand that the gasoline we used was obtained from fossil fuels, but it is possible to convert electrical power into chemical fuels (so-called eFuels). Such fuels would allow excess solar, wind and tidal energy to be stored in a compact form that can be easily shipped from where there is extra energy to where it is needed. Such eFuels use atmospheric CO2 and hydrogen from water (sea water is actually better), and so there is no net CO2 emitted from such fuels. So in my opinion it might be better to have a moderately sized battery pack that gives enough range for the vast majority of one’s driving with a range extender engine utilizing eFuels to drive past the battery only range. I don’t think the Volt is ideal, just the best of what is currently available. The ideal would have Al larger battery with around 100-130 miles of range. The range extender would be designed to work in parallel with the battery, not as a complete replacement for the batteries that is able to power the vehicle by itself. Instead the range extender would be sized to replace only the steady-state power of the vehicle (70 mph cruising on the interstate averaged over 4-5 hours). The batteries would then be used to fill-in power when accelerating or climbing hills and absorb extra power from the range extender when going down hill or any other time the range extender is making more power than is needed to propel the car. Thus the range extender would be a much smaller engine that would be designed to operate pretty much all of the time at the peak efficiency rpm’s and power output. For a Volt sized vehicle the range extender would NOT be a 1.4 liter “Iron Duke”. Instead it would likely be something more in the 0.5 liter class highly optimized to operate at peak thermal efficiency at a single operating point. No need to worry about a broad torque curve to get acceptable acceleration at low speeds, that is what the batteries and electric motor is for. One potential for the range extender is a free-piston engine. That would just drive a generator and would be a fraction of the volume and weight of the Iron Duke.

My 2017 Malibu hybrid was having issues with the brakes. After a rain, the breaks would not fully release causing my engine to work harder, and my mpg to suffer. MPG went from 50 to 20. I took the car to my mechanic, because I don't let the clowns at any dealership touch my car, other than to do warranty repairs. Nothing was found, except the car was excessively damp inside. So, I did some research on the internet. It turns out that several 2016 & 2017 GM vehicles had leaky back window seals, and water would enter the car and accumulate in the trunk area. I checked, and I had about two inches. The humidity that resulted would severely mess with the car electronics. Although the car was out of warranty, GM had a special notice saying that defect would be covered for a few extra years. GM fixed it for free, and the problem has not returned. You mentioned your issue happened after it rained, so it might be something similar.

I need to hear about how you wired the trailer lights - can you do a video on that, please? We also have a Torklift 2" hitch on our 2017 Bolt EV Premier, and the best thing I found was the wiring harness designed for the *Volt*. It has two issues: the first is it requires a 12V supply connection, that I ran a wire up to the 12 volt battery in the front. The second is the bigger issue: the lights on the bumper on the Bolt EV (where the Volt harness connects to) only work when the hatch door is open. So, I have to put a rag cloth around the latch, so it only closes to the first latch point, and the lights then *kinda'* work. But, I don't have both brake lights and turn signals at the same time. The clunking seems to be an interference between the front sway bar and the subframe?

Have I told you about my 1st gen Renault Twingo whose ABS turned itself off when passing a strong radio emitter on the starboard side in rain? There were two locations where it was happening (a local FM station emitter and some kind of radio relay installation with lots of microwave link dishes). Reset (restarting the engine) cleared the issue, but we were never able to find the root cause (probably something to do with a sensor picking radio interference and sending nonsense signals to the controller), and I didn't feel like replacing half of the vehicle's electronics (pretty integrated - ABS didn't have a separate controller) out of warranty.

I recently said goodbye to my 2020 Bolt a couple of weeks back. I was not sad about it and won't miss it at all. Forget all of the other problems, but GM still had not yet replaced the battery. I was lucky to get all of my purchase price just days before GM dropped the price to less than I had paid 2 years ago. Mine had a sticker of nearly $40k and I got nearly $28k or a little more than I paid. The Bolt was no fun to own. My wife was ready to dump it within the first month of ownership. So many things didn't work very well, including the advertised emergency braking, resulting in a very minor accident. Sensors in general work correctly only very sporadically.

Nikki, Been meaning to mention this, for a while, concerning the Chevy Bolt. Since our first Bolt, in 2018, noticed folks looking for a “percentage” figure in remaining battery capacity. Observed, way back then, that there are 20 battery segments (in four, five segment, groups), displayed in both the left remaining mileage, and the “Flow” screen in the “Energy” display group. This would equate to 5% for each active segment. I have used this criteria to “calculate” remaining battery “percentage” since our first Bolt (currently, drive a 2022 EUV Premier, as well as a Tesla 2021 “Y”). I have found it to be a useful calculation (within 5%). Best regards, Gary Mirkin

I've said this before on other sites: Include a combination of solar and wind power generators in your EV designs! Off-grid is the way to go! Sure, include the charging stations in your plans for transition to EV's, but we will get there faster - much faster - if apartment dwellers and those who reside in rural areas can purchase EV's NOW, rather than wait for enough charging stations and the re-construction of our electrical grids. It is not feasible for people like me to purchase an EV at this time, as much as I would like too. OFF-GRID IS THE WAY TO GO FOR SO MANY REASONS!

I have a 2017 Bolt Premier and feel the same. I’ve actually had far far fewer problems than you…actually, there have been ZERO issues with my car, it has almost 57k miles. It does exactly as you said, it gives heaps of torque right off the line. I’m moving into a Tesla Y performance, and I’m not sure I’m making the right move. I love love the rear view lcd mirror and 360 surround camera which the Tesla doesn’t have. The Bolt is short and narrow, which makes it easy to drive, easy to park, and easy to fit in the garage with extra room around it. It’s nearly the perfect car. It falls short, as all CCS charging vehicles. Too difficult to take long road trips with unpredictable places to charge, and unreliable chargers, all taking different methods to get charging started. So, like you, I’m super sad to see my bolt go. I was on the fence…I almost went with GM MSRP swap into a new bolt, but I decided on taking the Buy-out option.…if the Silverado EV were ready, I wouldn’t hesitate one second. I would be signing a contract instantly. Nice job Nikki, and nice job GM.

It do yes great as you say in everything but road trip charging. Got a Taycan end of 2020 so I have my road tripper now, but lacking some of the utility of the bolt and it’s understated abilities to put a smile on your face. Sure you’ll love the F150 Lightning.

I wish our 2015 “ICE” Hyundai Sonata only had 67k miles, or even 97k miles. Our car does have a feature that’s extremely rare on mainstream cars: memory seat & mirrors. We both drive our car and have different positions for seat & mirrors so the memory settings save us the constant hassle we had on our previous car. If we can swing it, and get a charger at our apartment we’ll get a used top trim Hyundai Ioniq EV (not the new 5) with memory seat & mirrors.

hmmm, i think gremlins are not dissolve-able in water, water even made it worse, when i remember correctly. so you might want to warn those new owners to not get it wet and also don't recharge after midnight, just in case.

I'm excited to follow your experiences with the F-150 lightning ⚡. I never really get attached to my cars. But I am really happy with my Bolt. I am happy they decided to do the wholesale battery replacements, even with an MSRP swap I would not have been able to keep the Orange color. Though having seen the sky blue color in person I think I could have lived with it just fine...

As someone who's had MORE than my fair share of experiences with newer fords, I would warn you to watch the rear suspension bushings, as well as the plastic t fittings and connectors for the cooling system. Sure, the batteries may not get anywhere near the temps of an ice engine's cooling system, but the fluid going through them and the vibration during operation may have contributed to their failures. Other than that, I don't think there was too much beyond the normal random electrical gremlins you'd find in any make of vehicle.

Nice one on the F150 Lightning, it looks to be the perfect fit for you. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Cybertruck reservation holder (day 1) but in the UK. I giggle when I remember the dig Tesla made to Ford with the Cybertruck launch 'tug of war' film. Well Ford has definitely beaten Tesla to the market with a very convincing pickup product and as soon as they make it online orders only they can circumnavigate some of the Ford dealerships that greatly marked up the Lightning, although I feel the less greedy dealers that didn't mark up (some exist I hear) should still be given the chance to sell them. I wonder when Ford will do the Lightning conversion of a good old UK Ford Ranger? I look forward to your videos covering the Lightning 🙂

If you think that lip is bad to lift over wait till you try the aptera. You understand you are way upside-down on the carbon footprint issues now? Normally the 50k-60k range is the break even point. The replaced battery screwed that up. Probably need at least another 25k miles to balance out again. But you are getting a F150 Lightning. That alone, not including the carbon debit from the Bolt, will mean the F150 will need to be with you for probably 100k miles to break even. Easy enough to do. But at essentially 3 kwh/mile in the Bolt vs 5 kwh/mile the electric source would need to be completely clean.
@transportevolved
@transportevolved 2 жыл бұрын
First, thanks for your input! Second, you know we have solar panels, right? Third, the entire house and studio, even when not using on-roof solar, buys green electricity. The battery replacement wasn't our fault - and so we had no choice regarding that carbon footprint. The Truck isn't being purchased as a vanity thing. It's being purchased as a work truck to allow us to (where possible) drive rather than fly to events. - Nikki.
@doclees11
@doclees11 2 жыл бұрын
@@transportevolved cost and convenience. That is what drives, pardon the pun, us. Chevy's battery issue doesn't change the fact that for all our good intentions it will take several years before your vehicle choice will be carbon neutral where the Bolt could be there in about 2 yrs. It is estimated that the carbon break even point for the average EV is between 25k miles and 90k miles with the average being about 58k miles, IIRC, because of the generally higher carbon cost to produce the EV. So with the crazy automotive times we are in I would be contributing less by buying a new ICE every 2 yrs than buying a new EV every 2 years. Just imagine what we might see 2 to 4 yrs from now in the EV world. Of course the most appropriate carbon choice would be to buy a used EV and keep it for as long as parts can be found. But I do envy your new choice.
