Too funny mate ''I'd rather be out taking rubbish pictures''. Never a truer word was said. 95% of what we shoot is total crap and yes there is pressure to always be delivering the goods. One thing you'll always have Tom is your integrity. As long as you're happy with the content you create, that's all that matters. I was talking to Adam Gibbs about this and we both agreed that even if you don't capture a killer shot, the story of how you tried is what makes great content and people do love to see others out and about doing what they love. Inspiration is inspiration, whatever form it comes in.

It's almost 2021. I just bought my first decent camera and after exhausting quite a few nerdy gear-related videos I've stumbled upon your channel. I sometimes fall into these niche YT rabbit holes that help me zone out, be at peace, and learn about my new hobbies. E.g. ambient guitar pedals, primitive technology, video game play-throughs, etc... I'm so happy you do what you do, and hope that if you ever feel discouraged again, know that these videos will live on forever and you never know what joy you will bring to the younger generations of curious and contemplative artists. - Sincerely, your new fan from Florida, Austin.

Absolutely. We all get caught up in GAS now and then, that little red devil on your shoulder whispering "if only I had a newer ...". Thomas fell into that trap, and by sharing his life on KZbin we all got to see and comment on it. I was frustrated when he made the first "I'm switching" video because he never gave a proper reason for the switch. Was he not getting the shot because of his current gear or was it just GAS? Glad he has recovered and back on track doing what he loves. Wishing Thomas and you all the best for 2019. Keep up the good work.

I think, it's a trend for people to say that gear doesnt matter. But it does. Do not shy away from saying gear matters. It does matter. Being obsess with gear is no good. Theres a difference in between being obsess over gear and being critical in what you are going to get. It's like saying doesnt matter which house you buy, house is a house, only who lives in the house and love is all that matter. Or doesnt matter which car you buy, as long as it drives. No it matters which car you buy. Just my two cents. I love both you guy's channel
@Bucko2614
@Bucko2614 6 жыл бұрын
@@SeanKimStyle I agree. Gear does matter in terms of getting the job done. We need a house, we need a car etc. The "problem" is that we think we need bigger houses and faster cars when we don't really need an upgrade. My issue with Thomas was that he never said why specifically his 5div or Eos wasn't good enough. Why the need for a new camera. Did he sell less prints because of it? Did he have less KZbin followers because of his gear? When and why do you decide your gear isn't good enough and you need a new camera. That is the explanation that was missing and why we all assume it was GAS. Gear to get the job done matters. Having the newest, greatest gear does not. Agree?

Way to go Thomas. Most of us watching cant afford the ££££ D850's, Z7, EOS R etc. Were watching because like you, we like going into the outdoors and wild places to trying and bring a little piece of the emotion we felt and saw back, to show others and remember it in years to come. Most of us with whatever photo gear we have. I get the feeling that if you strip away KZbin, the KZbin followers, guided workshops and if it wasn't your job, you would still be going into the outdoors and taking landscape photos. Your passion will guide you in 2019. Happy New Year.

3 minutes in and I was like ready to support your attempts to review cameras because once in a while we all need some honest opinions... but then, I've been feeling it too as a multiple year watcher of your channel... the last several I found myself feeling like you were struggling for content and yes even questioning if I was going to continue to watch twice a week. So your feelings are true about the spirit of this channel. Here's what I get most from your channel in order of importance to me: 1) See what you see. I fancy myself a landscape photographer and I've always thought I had a pretty good eye, but then to see how you see compositions and can pull amazing shots out of nothingness is why I tune it to learn. 2) Your honest, low key, guy next door, zero judgement character... its like we could have been friends our whole life (I have a few years on you though). 3) your settings and methods, for example focus stacking I learned first from you. I'm alway curious, and I wish you did it more often, when you discuss your camera settings for each shot. THESE do so much better when you're in love and passionate about them, so thank you for coming back home. I will continue to watch twice a week :-)

Totally agree! Love how 'normal' you are, showing the good ánd the bad side of traveling outdoor. Showing the settings so I can follow your thoughts. Good that you read the comments but don't read all of them. Only a few of your 314.000 subscribers comment and usually the one screaming the loudest haven't done anything in life except knocking down others. So when you count the negative comments, compare them to the positive + all who did not comment. I know which side wins.

I stumbled across your videos when looking for inspiration and something to fill lonely hours spent on the sofa convalescing...... The camera was put in a cupboard. I became a sofa surfer, hooked on your videos and binged. Admired your honesty and your gentle humour and your passion. It gave me the chance to see places I might never get the chance to visit and learn how you create your beautiful images - the way you compose an image and how you are prepared to get soaked by waves, rain and rivers. You have inspired me and made me determined in 2019 to get out there and try landscape photography. You have nailed the truth Tom. Its not all about the perfect image. I took 2 years and 18 days to get a shot of a kingfisher. I practised on Red Arrows along the way. But what it taught me is that it is the journey and the passion for doing the thing you love. Its the friendship and companionship of others who make photography so rewarding. Its being one with nature and celebrating the seasons and the storms. The image is part of the journey but its the little bits along the way, from getting wet, to cursing when you have forgotten the spare battery and the person in the hide who helps with settings, that coalesce into the reward and joy of the final image. Keep doing what you do so well. Inspire, encourage and help us to become better photographers as we share your journey and you become part of ours. You got me through some dark, lonely months and now I can't wait to get out there. Thank you and I wish you, your camera and van many adventures in 2019.

Fantastic video Thomas. This is why I subscribed to your channel. I'm not a pro photographer, just a passionate hobbyist. I'm sixty years old and I've been hiking, camping and backpacking for fifty years. Started digital photography about ten years ago with a Canon 60D. Three months ago I finally updated to full frame with the 5D mk4. Sure the upgrade was visible in the images, but it's those quiet solo walks at the first light of dawn that makes photography so much more than just a hobby. Your video today, like the ones used to do before the gear nonsense, are what reinforce my personal passion and joy from this art form. The way you pieced together the scenes in the video made feel like I was there with you. And living in the hot dry desert of Southern California, I could almost feel the cool air. The overcast sky, the green trees and colorful hillsides seem so different than my local mountains and desert. But watching your appreciation of the land of your home has convinced me to get out tomorrow and enjoy the second day of the new year in my beautiful desert of Joshua Tree National Park. Thanks for the inspiration.

Every experienced hiker has some sort of water barrier to sit on and yes they can be creative. Lots of common building materials like Typar work or even a plastic bag. I use a piece of an old car windshield sunscreen because it weighs nothing, is padded and reflects heat. You can sit on snow and your butt stays warm. A store bought unit is considered novice stuff - shhh.

Thomas, you are not alone. I've been a photojournalist and a nature photographer off and on for forty years and the one question guaranteed to drive me nuts is "What camera did you use to take that picture." First off I don't take pictures I make them. Second off as you often point out any decent camera is fine as long as you actually know how to use it. And finally the camera does not deserve the credit for a good nature/landscape photo God does...and I might deserve a pat on the back from time to time as well. Lastly, I make part of my living running charter boat trips in Acadia National Park here along the Coast of Maine and I get a lot of photographers on board. If I've said it once I've said it 1,000 times, setting out on a photo trip always expecting to get great photos is a prescription for disaster. Enjoy the total experience and if some great photos result so much the better!

For me, as a photographer and fellow human being it’s nice to see a video that brings me back to some basic reasons as to why I go out and shoot. I love the adventure, Mother Nature, and the feel of a camera in my hands. A few years ago I gave up on expectations of trying to get the perfect image & realized that for me perfection is an illusion. Today you reached the point, you are an inspiration for most of your followers as for me too , I started to be interested in all of the history around each photo and all your techniques to improve the results, about the camera it’s clear for everyone that a good camera helps a lot, but there are lots of people that follow you to learn how to go out and take good times photographing, even with entry level cameras, I think the pleasure comes from the techniques learned from you and the contact with nature that you inspire. Please, give us always a Photo in each video even if you don’t like the results, some of us hope always to see the result of each video in a photo! The most successful photographs I’ve taken over the last 20 years have been absolute accidents when I’ve just been out for a walk. Relaxed in my expeditions and vision regardless of the conditions. Where your channel shines Tom is your skill in documenting so well your experience and adventures outside. I’ll go as far as to say the quality of photograph you capture is irrelevant. What you’ve been doing is documenting your journey and inspiring others. People should appreciate regardless of ability every time you pick up a camera doesn’t guarantee an amazing photograph. That is the challenge, trying to see and put together an image you are happy with. The more you practise the better you see. You document that challenge so well and as a result you have such a loyal and supportive following. The journey is full of ups and downs and the biggest challenge we face is one within ourselves. You have quite a few people behind you wishing you success and positivity in your adventures. Supporting you along the life long journey of landscape photography. Keep doing what you love, that’s success.

One more, "Well said!" It's unfortunate that the more successful people are on KZbin, the more pressure they put on themselves to keep creating content. With everything in life there is a balance and even if you are making decent money from KZbin there is a point when life can become unbalanced if you try too hard to create content. And that isn't healthy. Gear does matter to an extent. You couldn't create the images you create now with the first digital camera I bought in 2000, but again it's a case of balance. Most modern cameras are perfectly capable of great results and there is no need for anyone to be overly obsessive about gear. You are right to listen to your gut, your instincts. Even if 'logic' tells you otherwise, it is your instincts that will tell you if you are doing the right thing or not. You've done that and you've now made the appropriate changes for 2019. Good move!

From the desert of Tucson, Arizona, US, now mid-July, wet and dreary sounds wonderful! I have also felt that it's not the gear or setting up of the camera that brings me the inner joy of photography (because with experience you develop a sense of what lens/setting work). It's being out there alone and spending time at a location (I never feel I can take my time when someone tags along). It's a process. It is important to sit quietly, or as you said to walk around, listening and soaking in everything you see. Then with luck, and out of nothing, where somebody else might have just walked on through, you will suddenly see and feel "the shot." It's a hunt! That's exciting. That excitement is then rewarded when someone later looks at your photograph and immediately sees and feels what you experienced. And like any hunter or fisherman, you sometimes return home empty-handed. But it the possibility that sends you out again. I enjoy your channel. Continue your journey.

Well done bud for having the humility and intelligence to recognise the need for change if you start to lose passion. Personally, your videos in your camper van from the lakes or other national parks are why I tune in. I have an ancient Nikon D5100 which I love. Keep being you. Don’t let social media get to you. That being said, I still like some gear videos like talking about how you print your prints on a Canon printer or maybe a particular good travel tripod. So as a viewer, it would be nice if you still mentioned some great camera accessories you use.

Hi Thomas, Just recently I've stepped into photography again, at 50, not at all professionally, discovering so many interesting photographers on KZbin. This video is the first I have seen from you, and initially I wanted to go to bed but clicked on it anyway. I did not know what the title was referring to exactly, but you had me with the first shots, all cozy and warm from inside your small space ... and then I just couldn't stop watching until the end. There are so many different opinions out there, different ways to look at scenes, compositions, etc. that still need to be sorted in my head, or heart. Anyways, you encouraged me to take a step back. It's about joy and happiness. I need to remember that. Watching you, listening to you, it was so calming. I am going to bed now feeling much better than I did before, so thanks for that. And thanks for, while you prefer being out there on your own, sharing your thoughts and experiences with the world, at least with anyone who might come across your channel. So glad I did.

Your Intro was in my humble opinion Spot On. I have felt like saying something in the comments on your last few Videos but that sort of felt , well not my place. Bit like an apprentice questioning the Master. BUT now you have raised the lid on the subject here's is my opinion. You got me into Landscape photography and it was your out in the field enthusiasm that did it. Now I know you are becoming much more than just a KZbin Vlogger. International photography lectures, Workshops, new house etc , your workload is growing and growing so the pressure on you to produce a weekly Vlog must be immense. So the odd Office based video on gear well i'll accept that but yes the channel has lost just a tad of its shine recently and you can tell that you were not that enthused in delivering those videos. Glad you made this and i'll be following and watching. Happy 2019

Well done, Thomas! You ended your year with a terrific video. You're absolutely right; you're camera doesn't matter. I'm so happy you have "gone back" to find your true place and to what matters: making compelling, engaging, and beguiling _photographs._ I was also out yesterday photographing the sunset over San Francisco from Treasure Island with two friends. It was a beautiful evening, we actually had clouds, so we had lovely color. We were shooting with Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm, but there was virtually no discussion about what camera anyone was using; it was just about three friends being out together and photographing a beautiful evening. I didn't come away with my best-ever San Francisco from Treasure Island sunset shot, that's fine, but...it was just great being out shooting on a beautiful evening with friends. Remember: technology is transient, art is timeless. No one cares what brushes Vermeer used to paint _The Girl with the Pearl Earring"._ Best, Stephen

It's a temporary change of direction due to the fact you've been considering trying to gain better IQ for you landscape images which naturally involves looking at the market for alternatives. I think most are interested in your views on the gear itself as a 'proper' photographer who makes images that we all get to see. I'm sure we all know once you've made your decision to upgrade or not......the channel will be back on the usual track of the outdoors and landscape photography. Like I say, its a long journey we're on with you week by week and your views in the real world with gear does matter too. Anyway....looking forward to seeing the channel getting back on track....which it naturally will, I've no doubt....as we all know you're a photographer, NOT gear reviewer. So going back to your roots and sticking with creating content you're passionate about may be the more challenging path, but I think in my opinion the best thing for your channel. No one can ever take away from you the fact that you have inspired many individuals like myself to go out and experience nature and if you're lucky come back with a nice image or two. A great reflection. The reason I came to the channel (probably in the first 20k subscribers?) was the experience you had making photos--camping/hiking/eating/sleeping/van-ing/whatever. It's in living vicariously and watching you do things maybe the viewer can't or won't--I came for the photo trip but stayed for the can of food you opened on the side of a mountain and how cozy that must have been. The end photos and the gear are just a bit of spice. You do you!

I subscribed because of your passion for landscape photography, and an amazing ability of telling the story. Some of my favourite vlogs were those that you came away with little. Your personality is what I feel is your biggest differentiator. Interestingly you like taking minimalist photos that are enriched with emotions, your commentary is less verbose than other photographers but extremely high in “being there with you” hooks, and your soundtracks are subtly moody. I think that these combinations is the magic formula that has me drawn to your videos. I do not mind you doing different style of videos, but I’ll be honest and admit what keeps me coming back for more are your outdoor ventures... even if to just take a walk. Finally, if we do not try something different, we reduce our opportunity to learn. So, on that note, what learnings have you taken from this experience? Ps. I actually liked how you did intertwine observations about your trial camera into your outdoor landscape videos. Still a big fan!

Looking back and realizing the successes you have experienced over the years has to feel good. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. That is why I am going back and watching many of your old ones. I like diversity. I like watching you hike through the woods to find a shot. Incorporate your van, the hike, cooking meal, finding a place to park, all of it together makes for an interesting video. Occasionally I do like a gear video. But maybe only twice a year. I do go to your website and see what gear you are using. So keep that updated. I love watching you occasionally meet up with Gavin, Adam, Nick (F4), and others. It is fun seeing you with others every once in a while. You do your videos well! I wish when I came from the USA earlier this year to hear you and Nigel speak at the NEC photography & video show that I would have been able to shake your hand. My fault, not yours. I stayed only Saturday. Bonus, I saw and talked with Joe Cornish. Seeing the three of you made the trip great. I left after that to go photograph in Wales. From the title of my name you can tell I am retired. I’m trying to bring my photography to a new level. I’ve been taking pictures since I was 18, I am now 67. I love photography. Seeing and hearing you focus again on the stuff that really makes you different from other KZbinrs renews my interest in your person as a photographer, your channel and your content. Your most interesting videos not only tell a story (as you said) but also describe the process behind it, which was always kind of educational and inspirational for me. I listened to half of your video and I had to stop and comment. Most of your viewers love your videos and you. (Some people need something to complain about.) If they didn't like the channel, they would stop watching. So what, others would find you. I don't watch you to see you make the perfect image- all of your images are better than mine. I love to walk with you on your travels and think about what you are explaining about the conditions. I love to hear you complain about the weather (and I'm sometimes glad I'm not standing there). In short- I personally don't care about the content (reviews of cameras or gear) as long as you are using the gear to take pictures. I have read some of the reviews over time and I think most viewers just want your next video. I checked in to my computer twice hoping to see a new one. Thomas- you are over thinking this. We watch you! So walk, take photographs, complain, enjoy... but keep taking photographs and tell us about them!

As both a consumer and producer here on KZbin I can affirm that there is a difference in mindset between the two. When it comes to Thomas channel I want to, as you said, follow him on his adventures and the final result of a image is not what I really care about. The video is the product I care about :P but if I think about the creation of a video for my own channel I don't really want to release a video which results in a bad photo. When creating I think we tend to only want to show our best work, but the consumer doesn't really care that much about perfection and they understand that not every video can include perfect conditions with an amazing photo at the end. But as a creator that is kinda what we try and hope to achieve.
