i think i really needed this. i get lost in my head so easily when thinking about projects-- getting overwhelmed with how little i think i know, or looking so far ahead that the project seems insurmountable. i think i WILL make that short film i was thinking about! it's simple, achievable, and it would be a great big step on my artistic journey! thank you. you've inspired me. ^^

I'm so glad to hear that! Have you heard of flow state before? It's where an objective is not too difficult that it becomes frustrating, or not too hard that it becomes boring. But it sits right in the middle, and having projects like that can really help!

Wow this video helped me so so much getting out of my own head! I’m right in the middle of developing a project & halfway through started to feel overwhelmed by thoughts of failure & not seeing it through but Daniel you just inspired me to continue & push through, I’m grateful for watching your video, I hope everyone can get the same motivation from this!!!

This video was so useful and something I definitely needed to hear. My webcomic project is something I’ve actually already started but is currently on hiatus. I’ve been finding it hard to going back into the grind of things because I got discouraged after working so hard and not accomplish the success goals I had in mind. But I’ll try to apply what you said and go back to it one step at a time and hopefully this feeling will go away! I thank the ytb algorithm for randomly recommending me this video!

Yesss you can absolutely do it! Webcomics especially take a lot of work and attention, which can be quite daunting when there's so much left to do. But continue chipping away at it, do a tiny bit each day or each week, and build that momentum 😎😏

I’ve been wanting to start making KZbin videos, games, comics, music and basically any other creative thing, especially stop-motion. It’s a lot, but I figure I can start with one of these first. Time management really is my biggest issue, but I’m getting there soon.

i have a story in my head. I want to make a manga. it's sort of vague, I have the 2 arcs figured out, but the details are blurry. I love my characters, I like daydreaming about them. I can't seem to get myself to do it despite logically knowing I'll figure out the details along the way. there's also stress from school that turns me into ''mush'' where I just scroll youtube for hours. it's hard to be consistent when there's no consequences for just... not doing anything. idk. but this video is probably what I needed so, thanks

It's awesome that you have that idea. I remember watching an interview with George RR Martin and he was talking about the idea of being an 'architect' versus a 'gardener' when it comes to writing. The architect plans everything meticulously, but the gardener tends to things and sees them grow over time. I think the truth is that we're a bit of both - it may help to just create a character interaction/moment and go from there ✏️📔

It's interesting to find this video now, because a couple weeks ago I took my biggest artistic leap yet, which is painting in oils. I had gone to the art store several times in the past years and held the oil suupplies in my hands, only to put them back on the shelf for fear of it becoming just another media I would give up on after seeing how hard it is in the beginning. Just like I did with gouache, acrylics, watercolor and so on and so forth. But this time I took a deep breath as I held the supplies again, and just thought "fuck it". And bought them, ignoring the fear of wasted money, time and poorly applied supplies. I just went for it. And one night, 2 weeks ago I took the oils for a spin after watching a few videos. Just threw colors on a gesso primed sketchbook page, and kinda played around with it, to feel it, without rhyme or reason, just following my heart. It came out not being either good or bad, but I was proud for having taken a first step. I'm three sessions in, and I have painted a few still lifes in gray scale, and I've never been more proud of myself. I've always, like many of us, felt like a fraud, an impostor just waiting to be found out and revealed as someone who does not have any of the so called artistic talent. But these gray stil lifes showed me something, which is very similar to what you've said in the video. If you just go for it, turn of your self awareness and just blow through it, you can achieve amazing creative results, in any endeavor. But especially in art, I guess. I've never felt more inspired. Thank you for your video. This message hits home for me.

This was beautifully written, thank you for sharing you experience moving to oils. 😊 It's always daunting at the beginning but I think finding fun in the actual process and not the outcome helps immensely. Traditional painting is actually something I want to do more of myself, and it seems like a great way to focus directly on the task at hand without infinite tools and possibilities.

2:06 yeah well i mean you kinda do. you could start a comic right now but if in 10 episodes your style has completely grown and changes, you improve in your anatomy etc, you’re just gonna have to start over or everyone will think it’s trash, low quality and non cohesive. there’s no point starting until you’re confident in your skills and have a consistent style.

you're completely wrong. the idea that you can't start something until you're fully confident in yourself is paralyzing. you decide youself when you feel you are proficient enough to take on a project, but that also means that you can keep putting it off forever. how else are you supposed to get experience? if you want to start a comic, and take years to improve your art until you feel you're good enough, that means you completely missed out on all the other skills you learn DURING the comic-making process. like layout, story structure, writing, efficient and fun workflow. also, people don't think the way you said they do-- they see the improvement, and comment on that. not that it "isn't consistent". if a comic looks better every episode, how is that a bad thing? stop making excuses. take on your project. you can do it, i swear, and you'll learn a lot along the way.

@@oh9648 making excuses … sure. ive fucking tried. i have tried. you can’t learn ALL that shit on the way, or at least not everyone can. ive researched, watched videos on all those things. it’s so goddamn hard. add in mental illness you got a recipe for failure. also the improvement others see? it doesn’t matter if you hate what you created a month ago. you’re just gonna wanna take it down and redo it, ive seen it happen.

An example I find really inspiring is seeing how the character Hilda evolved and changed over time. Luke Pearson changed his style drastically over the years writing the comic, and it's really useful to see how things ebb and flow as he developed more of an artistic voice.

@@oh9648 i feel like learning all those separately and then going to learn them all through the process makes sense. which is what i’ve been trying to do. but is there even any point when everything is just gonna have to be redrawn again and again and again. and who even knows? what if it’s just ultimately bad and cannot physically get better. idk how others do it.

@@DanielAngArt yeah but the thing is Hilda has a fantastic, clear art design with an iconic style. what it is now is instantly recognisable and nothing has to be redrawn for the show because of improving anatomy or changing some of the rules in its art bible. it knows what it is.
