One thing I'll never understand is how the Red Sox got off so easily in the public opinion. In 2018, Mookie saw his offense SKYROCKET (genuinely an unbelievable jump in offensive output). He went from slashing .264/.344/.459 in 2017 to .346/.438/.640 in 2018. He had a 186 OPS+. His 2nd best OPS+ in his entire career is 147 in 2020. Altuve went from a 2016 slash line of .338/.396/.531 to .346/.410/.547. That comes out to a measly increase in OPS+ from 155 to 160. Oh and he equalled that OPS+ in 2022. Yet somehow, mookie is treated as one of baseball's golden boys while altuve was branded the face of the cheating scandal and became the most hated player in the league. It's mind boggling

Mookie's slash in 2016 was .318/.363/534, which means that his jump in 2018 wasn't that unbelievable (hell, I used to joke about how Betts was an evens year player, suck in the odd years while good in the even years). You basically compared his worse year with his best year and decided that was proof of cheating. You also try to assume Altuve didn't cheat with stats, but ignore his slumps while doing it (demonstrating your bias). This is flawed and cant give you the whole story. You have no way to substantiate when cheating started of even if it has stopped or hasn't continued. Hell, for all you know Altuve is the real ring leader and he's being doing it the whole time. Look at Altuve's huge jump from 2013 to 2014. He must be cheating, right? You can't simply declare cheating, or exonerate someone from it, based simply on stats. Even so, you miss the whole picutre. Bottom line is that Astros suck the most at hiding the cheating in a sport where cheating occurs regularly is the simplest explanation (just own up to it). It became public knowledge. Altuve is the best player on the Astros, so that made him the poster child. Unfair? Maybe. But that's the way people work. Stop crying. Only the Astros get brought up more than the Red Sox when cheating is talked about. Look at this video and the many others that do the same.

Ok fair enough he had a 133 OPS+ compared to 108 in 2017 (I wrote that whole thing pretty quickly and just grabbed the years before for each player. Wasn't trying to cherry pick, but fair point to make). But even so, that's still a staggering 53 point increase to get to his 186 OPS+ in 2018. Stop trying to paint that as something it isnt. It's an incredible jump in offensive output that is a total outlier to the entire rest of his career. Also, trying to justify it by saying "he just performs better in even years" is quite possibly the stupidest, most deluded take I've ever seen. As for altuve, this whole "he could have been the ring leader for all we know" is a pretty pathetic attempt at an "argument". It's been pretty well documented that he didn't take part teammates & coaches have all testified to this, people have analyzed hundreds of hours of video showing who benefited the most frol the banging, and in those analyses, altuve is consistently shown to be one of the lowest). You want to talk about bias, yet you've shown clear as day for everyone to see that you're not interested in actually looking into the facts about the whole scandal and would rather peddle your bullshit, made up "theories". But to solidify my case even further, I'd like to point you to Altuve's home/away splits in 2017, during which he had an .834 home OPS and a whopping 1.082 away OPS (that's a .248 point difference). And for the record, I'm not trying to say Mookie is a bad player or deserves any sort of hate for 2018. He's an incredible player, fun to watch, and great for the game. My point is just that so many teams were cheating, and while I understand scapegoating 1 team is a better look for the league as a whole, it's humorous to see everyone acting all high and mighty when their own favorite players are equally (or even more) guilty

Are you going to be as good? Hitters rely on instinct, scouting reports and experience. When you try and supplant that with direct knowledge, it's not a shock that it isn't as effective as you'd think. There's a reason they gave up on the system in 2018. Instead of relying on the other 3 things, you're listening for a signal from the dugout. What if the signal doesn't come? What if it's wrong on a pitch but you hear it again in the same AB? Do you trust it? People want excuses in life, and sports is no different. It's much more comforting to say "My team lost because of x" instead of recognizing the team wasn't good enough and didn't play well enough to win.

I roll my eyes more at the Home Field Environment made specifically for Launching Home Runs than anything to do with the Ball. Yankees Stadium was purposefully designed for more Balls to go into the Outfield Stands. That's why when it Opened, everyone was Raking. It's why Numbers Alone don't always tell the full Story. 21 of his Home Runs came against Baltimore, Boston, and Kansas City. Boston and Kansas City were the Two Worst Pitching Staffs in the AL Last Year and Baltimore wasn't far behind. Against the Top Two Non Yankees Pitching Staffs Houston and Cleveland? He hit 4, combined. Against the Bluejays? He hit 4 and that is who he had the most Plate Appearances against. The Only Outlier is he did hit 6 against Tampa who had a top rated Staff...but every single other team? He was feasting on the Horrible Staffs and playing average against the Good Staffs. Huge Asterisks next to it, the biggest being everyone saying "He's Clean! No PEDs" as if UFC Fighters and NFL Players haven't had passing PED Tests down for decades. Those things are IQ Tests only meant to catch the Stupid Users.

Also, judge can’t control the pitching he goes up against. Do you expect for him to be facing elite pitching every game. He’s obviously gonna have more HRs against bad pitchers than good ones, that’s the same with every hitter who has ever played and who ever will play.

The increase in OPS by the Houston Astros from 2016 to 2017: 1B Gurriel .677 -> .817; 2B Altuve .928 -> .957; SS Correa .811 -> .941; 3B Bregman .791 -> .827; LF Gonzalez .694 -> .907; CF Springer .815 -> .889; RF Reddick .749 -> .847; C McCann .748 -> .759. Utility Marisnick .588 - .815 That's an entire lineup with improved OPS from 2016 to 2017. Five of the nine lineup players set CAREER highs that they never topped. It's insane. Nothing like that has ever happened in MLB history. By contrast, of the regular players on the 2018 Red Sox team, only three improved their OPS over the prior year - Bogaerts, Benintendi and Betts - and only Betts had the best year of his career. Six of the nine regular players actually decreased. The 2001 Seattle Mariners, with the best record in MLB history, also only had ONE player (Bret Boone) who had a career OPS season.

The one most people talk about now is a comment from a Dodgers player that they were stealing signs in both of their failed pennant races, which was published in a recent book by one of the writers who broke the scandal; however, the player in question was said to have been on the Red Sox at the time, so his claims are dubious to say the least.

As a Yankees fan I do hate them not cause they cheated but because they have always had the talent to win without cheating. A team with Altuve, Bregman, Correa, Gurriel, Springer, Verlander, Keuchel, and plenty other talented players should’ve never needed to cheat to beat a team whose 2nd best player at the time was Gary Sanchez. I think the hate from non Yankees and Dodgers fans has simmered down a ton but I wonder if that’s only cause Astros hadn’t repeatedly beaten teams whose fanbases aren’t considered the most annoying in the league. Yes they both required the center field camera but the Yankees needed a coach to relay signs to a player at second base so he could then sign to the batter so the system literally could not work unless a runner was on second. Obviously the use of the camera provides a bigger advantage but it was a lot more like traditional sign stealing that’s always been a part of the game. The Astros system didn’t even require a player to be on base or to make any sort of sign. They just had players watching a monitor in the hallway next to the dugout and banged on a trash can in real time whenever an off speed pitch was about to be thrown. It feels a lot cheaper to me but that’s just my opinion. They’re still a great team it’s just annoying how the players gave half assed apologies and acted like they did nothing wrong.

I think for most of us who aren't fans of the team, the hate is going to linger until those players who were on that 2017 team aren't on the team anymore. The majority of the hate comes from how they reacted to getting caught. This isn't about they should've apologized and yada yada. If there was a little ownership taken and recognition that they fucked up, then the hate train would've been long eased by now and they would be seen by fans as a tremendous team again. Instead, a lot of the players leaned into the "villain" role and it was infuriating. MLB's punishment also contributed to the hate. It didn't come close to fitting the crime. Personally, i do like guys like Altuve and Bregman. But the whole scandal and how it was handled by ALL sides was a shitshow from the start.

No, current players who weren't on that 2017 team shouldn't get chastised. Their greatness should be commended. But at the same time, their blemish as an organization in 2017 shouldn't be forgotten and should be viewed as a lesson. MLB walked a fine line by basically handing out no punishment. The negative is it created this wide spectrum of hate for an otherwise extremely well run organization. Hopefully the positive is that lessons were learned and if something of this magnitude happens again, the repercussions will be justified and our sport won't look as bad to the casual viewers

I think people forget WHY they weren’t punished. The Players’ Association blocked Manfred from doing it. While I’m all for unionizing, I don’t think we realize how much the MLBPA oversteps its bounds and constantly holds MLB hostage. That’s why there’s no salary cap, or why we nearly went into lockdown. They keep going further and further with what they can get away with, and that includes the Astros.

This is mostly a fair video. Josh Reddick and Tony Kemp were the two other players not using the cheating scheme. Also the Houston Astro organization was fined a maximum $5 million. The Astros lost the first two draft picks in 2020 and 2021. The Astro players were given immunity to break open the case.
