Out of everything, the datamines ARMS has had, give me the biggest amount of hope for a sequel, there's loads of weapons, characters and even a couple of other minigames that went unused so the ideas they could use to expand on a sequel are already there. Not to mention that there is still a story to tell with this game, and while the comic that was meant to tell it was canned, this just opened an opportunity for a potential sequel to tell it. Also if Yabuki and the team have free reign over what crossover content to add into the next mario kart (if any) I would 100% bank on seeing Min Min added, or at the very least an ARMS battle stage!

The simple solution to every fighting game to appeal to non-fighting genre players is to add a single-player campaign. See the latest Street Fighter, and unrelated, Diddy Kong Racing adventure mode.

Looking at Splatoon it's just a great tutorial. I've seen a lot of people be more interested in the campaign and then try multiplayer as they get familiar with the controls in single player.

Amazing video. (thanks for the name drop lol) I can absolutely imagine a new mascot character boosting ARMS's prestige (sorry Biff, you don't cut the cabage) And you know, I think an often overlooked aspect of ARMS with a lot of room for outward expansion is the customization. Like you said, it is a discreet IP so guest stars might be a bit tacky, but costumes? That's an arm of a different color!

I believe a potential Arms 2 would follow in the footsteps of the Like a Dragon series in the west; until recently, Like a Dragon was known as Yakuza internationally so to unify the branding when the series started gaining popularity, they named the second most recent title "Yakuza: Like a Dragon" to familiarise western audiences with the Japanese name before naming the most recent game "Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth" everywhere. Similarly, if ARMS 2 uses a more distinctive subtitle and reaches broader success, the next game could eschew the ARMS title in favour of a more marketable name for subsequent releases if the series finds it's feet.

Perhaps a problem with ARMS is that it was a bit unclear whether it was positioned as a "core audience" title or a blue ocean game. Since a lot of the marketing played up the usage of the joy cons in gameplay.

I have a strong feeling that an Indian character is going to be introduced to Arms next, as India is THE largest diaspora in the world (and soon to be most populous country on Earth) and there are multiple Hindu deities with large amounts of limbs. I don’t think they’ll base this character directly on someone like Shiva, Vishnu or Ganesha as it may come across as offensive, but an Indian character who has a gimmick of four arms sounds plausible.

Arms had tough competition back in 2017 and I’m surprised that a sequel didn’t happen in the last couple years since it could’ve been a decent time to see if arms could do better without that competition and a bit more brand power

This is a separate discussion, but my personal conspiracy theory on why something like Arms was not revived during Switch's lifetime is the Switch Lite. I think around the time the Lite model was being developed, Nintendo began to give less focus to Joy con features such as motion controls. I think one of the reasons something like Mario Odyssey 2 wasn't made for instance is because of the joy con use to control Cappy (naturally you can always use standard controls, but even in that game this was not recommended). However, once the Lite model launched, its adoption wasn't that widespread as I think Nintendo imagined. In five years, Switch Lite sold 24.37M units... below the 26.83M sales of the more expensive OLED model (in only 3 years). This is also why games such as Switch Sports, Wario Ware move it and Mario Party Jamboree returned to being joy con oriented, all launching in this "second half" of Switch's life.

I think the main problem with ARMS's lack of everlasting presence was two core issues. Multiplayer focus and Motion controls (despite the game having normal controls, the marketing material didn't mention it and people just assumed it's motion controls).
@TheDuzx
@TheDuzx 3 күн бұрын
I think these are good points. I think a good single player campaign would have made the game more appealing, but if they want to make the game more fitness oriented then this might happen in the sequel. Also I have seen a lot of complaints about the accuracy of the motion controls for all the games that used it on the Switch so I definitly do think that is something Nintendo would want to adress with the Joy-con2. A lot of motion control games did do really well on the Switch despite the complaints so I think Nintendo would see improved motion controls as a worthwhile investment.
@Neoxon619
@Neoxon619 3 күн бұрын
Splatoon made it clear that you could play without motion controls, so making that more obvious in the marketing could help. Having that be made aware upfront could let more people jump in, experiment with the motion controls, and maybe stick with them. That’s how Splatoon ended up having a majority of its players use gyro.

I really fell in love with ARMS' aesthetic, world, and characters, and thought it was a pretty fun game for what it was, so to see it not really get much love from fans or even Nintendo themselves was disappointment. I would definitely be down for a sequel on Switch 2, especially one that expands what they had there. One idea I had to get more eyes on it was to maybe include guest characters from Punch Out as down-the-line updates or DLC at least, maybe base game wouldn't be the best idea. It doesn't seem like they're interested in doing anything else with the IP and I think the two games would be a good fit alongside each other, since they're both basically just cartoonishly exaggerated boxing.
@TheDuzx
@TheDuzx 3 күн бұрын
Leg strap isn't a bad idea. I also don't think Nintendo wants people to do kicks in their home both because of the risk and because the franchise is named Arms, but they could incorporate it into doding and maybe even other movement. It would make it much more of a workout game and with how popular workout games have been on the Switch (Ring fit, three Fitness boxing games, even jump rope) I think this could be very interesting to them to make the sequel even more fitness oriented. One of the complaints I've seen is that the joy-cons weren't accurate enough so it's possible that Arms 2 has just been waiting for the Joy-con 2 because they wanted more accuracy for a better player experience.

@Team-Eclipse6024 This leak is allegedly from someone with access to a Switch 2 Dev-Kit. I think the “Chinese insider” part is fine. There are enough credible leaks from China that I don't doubt it on account of that. The thing that baffles me is how one would know this from the dev kits, as if there are assets from all sorts of games under current development just floating around on these things that some random indie developer can just see them. Then also, Custom Robo is not exactly at the forefront of the zeitgeist of gaming. This could maybe be a thing if it is a smaller scoped title developed on the Side (that game is not that dissimilar To ARMS tbf), but I don't know how thinly stretched the resources are at EPD 9, since they are also the Mario Kart devs.

There's a constant conversation about changing the genre of ARMS 2 in order to appeal to a wider range of consumers, but there's something disappointing to me in the idea of removing the inherent fighting game from ARMS. As was stated in the video, changing up the gameplay is a strong possibility, but ARMS shines for the way its characters mesh with the combat, and I would much rather they refine what they've created than change direction altogether. I sincerely hope we do get a sequel regardless.

I'm totally here for an ARMS sequel; to this day, it's my 4th most played game on my Switch. In terms of single player adventure, I always imagined it taking the route of stages acting a bit like a rails shooter, essentially dialing 'skill shot' mode up to 11 while walking up the streets to your next fight. In terms of innovation, I think they would do something to further the focus of customization rather than adding on overly game changing mechanics - even if it's mostly aesthetics. Toss in/replace a few ARMS attributes, maybe tweak how rushes work, and I think that would suffice with the expected additions of characters/ARMS.

I've been sayin that an ARMS 2 is inevitable for a hot minute now, it just never made sense for the Switch 1 because traditionally fighting games (Tekken, Street Fighter (Yeah I know not Nintendo but Smash sure is)) are generational and typically get one main release per console. ARMS is guaranteed to come back with a game leap similar to Splatoon to Splatoon 2 EZ

One way to resurrect ARMS may be to make another production run of carts. Almost immediately after the June Direct, when Metroid Prime 4 Beyond was revealed, Nintendo made another production run of Metroid Prime Remastered to restock retail stores and this seems to have boosted interest in both games a fair bit. Reintroducing the long-sold-out ARMS to retailers would at least get the casual gamer perusing shelves to recognize the game and either show more interest in an ARMS 2, or even pick up the game to try it themselves. They should also be pushing the ARMS demo more, perhaps with a subtly placed article on Nintendo News or within their email.

This isn't to say that I don't believe that it's going to happen anyway, but I feel another, maybe even the main thing Arms has going against it is its age, and the public reception that followed. By that I mean that, since Arms launched so close to the Switch's release, the relative radio silence that followed after the updates were wrapped up kinda just made people assume that it had been a failure when all of Nintendo's mainstay IPs were getting their own titles, sometimes even multiple. ESPECIALLY Splatoon 2 getting its own sequel in the form of Splatoon 3 didn't help things out in that department. (That's just my interpretation of the situation though) Then again, maybe public perception alone isn't enough to discourage Nintendo from releasing a sequel. After all, your average consumer probably isn't thinking "Man, they really did Arms dirty" every other day.

For a while I've thought of a return of ARMS not as a live-service, PvP game, but moreso as a beat-em-up, or something in that direction. Maybe they could incorporate ideas from that cancelled comic for a story mode? (Well, depending on what kind of story they were planning.) Using the different arm equipments for different strategies, like one set being more suited for dealing with mobs of enemies while another's more suited for one-on-one encounters or bosses? Part of me is also hesitant as to how viable a new PvP ARMS is commercially, as I'm rather pessimistic in regards to how many people would be interested in another game like the original. It was fresh, new, and perfectly slotted within the first half year of the switch's life when there weren't that many other games. But I could see Nintendo either being content with Splatoon as its main PvP IP, or trying a new IP altogether to fill in that slot the original ARMS did nearly eight years ago.

I would really love a proper sequel to Arms with a core single player mode. I think the franchise has great potential. If anything, this (and animal crossing) was the game nintendo needed to support with small but consistent DLC and events. Arms could basically become a live service style hero shooter like game for them (but very much not with the monetisation practices of those games).

I've thought about how an arm sequel could be developed and I think the natural evolution to the fighting game would be a hero arena fighter that uses the players arms to travelers, swing and sling across more complex stages as they fight. And it wouldn't just be 1v1 or even 2v2, it could be an arena fighter that goes up to 6 players either in teams or free for all.

I think I'd be worried about that particular EPD team if they took ten years to do their next Console Mario Kart AND ten years to give their most recent new IP a sequel. You'd think they'd be able to get new content out more quickly given all the money Mario Kart 8 makes. I also think while the motion controls probably aren't going anywhere, the button controls were just as good for playing the game so I don't think they'd add anything so complicated it wouldn't work just as well in both control schemes. More characters and deeper modes makes sense though.

They're more prolific than this gives them credit for. They did Deluxe and Arms for 2017 and Tour for 2019. If they started work on the next Mario Kart right after dropping Tour, it's barely over five years which seems reasonable for such a massive sequel. And in recent years they worked on the Booster Course Pass, quite possibly the Mario Kart ride at Super Nintendo World since then and for all we know have a second, original IP game in the works as they did for the 3DS and Switch launches.

Brilliant video! I've been thinking for a while about how ARMS could maybe take a slight directional shift in the future to try and capture wider audiences, and I think your idea about bringing in a "game-change character" paired with this could really help the series take off. For the record, I think the best way for them to take the series would be a more fitness-oriented approach. Still casual - not nearly to the same extent as something like Ring Fit mind you, but I think it would be great if they could take some notes from the Fitness Boxing series and maybe implement some kind of rhythm-based combo system with an emphasis on motion control, maybe using a leg strap for movement as well. A true(ish) fitness-based fighting game just sounds wayy too fun to pass up on. And the game-change character would be an excellent addition if this idea were the case! I can easily imagine some kind of fitness trainer character becoming the new poster child for the IP overnight, god rest Spring Man's soul.

I don't think Nintendo should try to force either Min Min nor Twintelle as the new face of ARMS. Cause you'd wind up with the same severe problem that Darkstalkers has faced for years and one major factor of why that series will never come back due to the severe lack of an actual community that is willing to show support for a series. ( Cause let's be real here, Darkstalkers fans are nothing but hapless gooner elitists that love to talk about their precious bimbos, but never lay a damn finger on the games. ) Doing that would cause ARMS to die out in the long run and would be nothing but Smash Bros folder material at that point.

I would say Springman is fine as the protagonist. He represents the kind of poster character archetype most fighting games utilize and there is a bit of intrigue in regards to his potential connections to Max Brass as well as his overall personality being very fitting for the role. MinMin's the most popular (and my favorite even though im a ribbon girl player) but its not uncommon for the most popular character in a fighting game series to not be the protagonist. Or to put it in more relatable Nintendo fan terms, "how many ppl playing Mario Kart actually have Mario as their favorite?" Kinda scenario lol. As for modes, I don't think they need to do a huge story centric single player campaign like Splatoon does. That's one critique since day one i was always against. I think they're fine following the standard arcade mode format grand prix has, just gotta beef up the grand prix's offerings. Like intro and ending cinematics unique to each character, unique rival battles amongst the cast, all while still fitting in Biff's commentary or Dr. Coyle's unique intel when playing as her. That kind of thing. And of course just more side modes, i enjoy what's there just wouldn't hurt giving folks more to do. I think also alternate costumes you can unlock for the characters would be a nice goal, helps that the roster isn't HUGE, i figure everyone from game 1 will return and not a crazy number of newcomers in a sequel. But we'll see.

Do you think Arms replaced Punch Out?
@nintendoforecast

There's a report currently, based on a drunken discussion with an NLG dev, that Punch Out led to a surprisingly negative reaction for its caricatures and Nintendo felt burned. If this is the case, and knowing that they do like to reuse concepts, it would make sense of Arms kind of stepped into the same space. Mind you, it didn't stop them putting previous games on NSO so who knows.

@nintendoforecast Yeah, Punch Out feels like a limited series. I do think that the next game from Next Level is non-Mario related. Thanks for your opinion.

@nintendoforecast It also didn't stop the ARMS team from considering Punch-Out characters for the game, as mentioned by Yabuki in an interview with Polygon (they didn't go through with it because they thought it'd alienate Punch-Out fans and newcomers alike) or the Wii Punch-Out from being one of the few Nintendo games to get an Nvidia Shield port in China.

I played one of the online demos for arms and it honestly it was just a boring game. I think the problem is that it kinda just felt like a new IP for the sake of making a new IP rather than anything someone particularly wanted to make. I'll just say I don't think its a coincidence that outside of a few exceptions like Kirby or Xenoblade almost successful every attempt at introducing a new Nintendo IP has done something that wasn't possible on previous hardware. Later NES IPs in Zelda, Metroid and even Fire Emblem were large scale adventures that made use of more space then the early NES titles had access to. F-Zero was the perfection of an illusion of 3D that previously had mixed results in games like Mach Rider. Mario Kart took what F-Zero started and made it more party focused. Star Fox used real polygons for a more natural experience then games like Space Harrier and After Burn. Pokemon used portability to add a social element to the experience. Pikmin was built on having dozens of characters working at once. Splatoon's ink mechanic would be too taxing for the Wii to do while playing online with 8 people. By comparison Arms isn't really doing anything like that, its motion controls are nothing we didn't see in the Wii era and 1v1 fighting in a small arena would be nothing special even on N64

I put over 200 hours into this game in 2017 because it was the only game my brother and I had on the switch for months hahahaha. And honestly, this game was middling at best. Really shallow gameplay, hardly any content

I view Arms a lot like a game such as Codename S.T.E.A.M. May be a quality product on a technical level, but it just didn't hook into fans for one reason or another. For me personally, the designs and gameplay were not as immediately understandable or charming as Splatoon. And the game feels like it has an identity crisis- it's marketed like a casual fighting game but with more obscure mechanics that would make it awkward to play with non-gamers. At least that's the way I see it.

Is it? IS IT? Literally who cares about ARMS 2 or these hour-long type of videogames "essays"? Do you understand how silly these titles look like when they get recommended? Imagine someone barely holding on in the middle of a warzone, and _this_ is what gets recommended. I hate the antichrist so much it's unreal. 2025 off to a fantastic start. I cannot wait for Cocomelon Expanded Universe to be taught in our public schools as an epic in the same hall of fame as Odyssey, War and Peace, Crime and Punishment and "Everything you should know about Marvel Cinematic Universe".

I personally don't think an ARMS 2 is close, if it's even happening at all. Nintendo is aware that the only reason it sold well was due to it being a new IP and being one of few new 1st-party games in the Switch's launch window. People just weren't very interested in it based on its gameplay aspects. Min Min getting into Smash was because they already planned it beforehand but ran out of time. Nintendo also cancelled the ARMS manga which tells me they have little confidence in the name, in comparison to Astral Chain where they went out of their way to buy the IP rights.

Fighters Pass 2 wasn’t greenlit until June 2019, & ARMS actually sold more than Astral Chain. Plus the graphic novel was gonna focus hard on Spring Man, who Nintendo kinda moved away from. If ARMS really was deemed a failure, they wouldn’t have bothered with Min Min in Smash at all. EPD franchisees have continued with fewer sales, just ask Pikmin.

@@Neoxon619I won’t say that Nintendo moved away from Springman, seeing he has the most lore and history within arms, Nintendo probably decided not to make the graphic novel, because of wanting to have more control over the story for the future.

@Neoxon619 I don't think it's that simple. Surely Nintendo would've told Sakurai that they wanted an ARMS fighter in Smash when they noticed that its game was proceeding well, (in 2016-2017) but then Sakurai would've told them there wasn't enough time and it was put on ice for a while. While Fighters Pass 2 was officially greenlit in 2019 I feel confident in saying it was almost fully planned even before Ultimate released. Both Steve and Sora had been in negotiations for a long long time, and many other characters had been considered in either Smash 4 or base game Ultimate. They weren't just going to scrap all of it, unless the game sold like crap. I don't know where you get this idea that they "moved away" from Spring Man. The only notable thing that's happened to the ARMS franchise after the game's release is Min Min getting into Smash and that's because most other fighters would've been very limited in their moveset, plus that the director of ARMS himself asked for it. While no reason was given for the manga's cancellation I doubt that was the one. My guess is they noticed that over time, after delaying it over and over, that the ARMS fanbase wasn't big or enthusiastic enough to warrant it. And as I said, I think Nintendo is aware of the reason why ARMS sold well. If it had released in 2019 as well I believe it would've sold much more poorly. All in all, I simply disagree.
@Neoxon619

@@amadeus.7436 Regarding Smash, they would’ve done her in the first season of DLC if what you’re saying was the case. But when the game was originally released, they only had one season of DLC planned. It was when the second season was approved that Nintendo sent requests for five of the six games/franchises that were represented (Sora was added last-minute, as negotiations went somewhere as of TGS 2019 according to Sakurai). So yeah, Nintendo could’ve easily just not bothered asking for an ARMS character at all if what you said is true. But that clearly wasn’t the case. And typically with franchises that sell in this caliber, it takes someone with a decent amount of clout at Nintendo to keep it pushing. Pikmin has Miyamoto, Metroid has Sakamoto, & ARMS has Yabuki.

A new Arms game need more singleplayer content and added more interesting to the fighting system, like more movement, defends and attack tools. Arms is fun, but also so shallow on the system. Fighting become very fast very repetitive.
