I hate when people dismiss her feelings about how she was treated as a child. Younger people today don't understand how it was being mixed race as a child during the era when she grew up... a lot of the country was utterly hostile towards people like her and her parents. The Civil Rights Act was only put in place 6 years before Mariah was born and interracial marriage was legalized 3 years after that. The interracial relationship between her parents was in fact still outlawed during the majority of her parent's relationship. People treated little Mariah so poorly when she was young, and you can see it still hurts her to this day.

Butterfly is such an amazing album. That album was in heavy rotation for me at the time it came out while I was in high school. Butterfly and Rainbow both helped me through so much that I was going through at the time. She released those two albums at the perfect time for me in my life. Fly Like A Bird and Make It Happen are two songs I listen to when I really need to be uplifted and motivated during difficult times. Mariah Carey has written the most therapeutic songs that I rely on. She definitely deserves more credit for certain songs that were overshadowed by other more popular songs.
