Hosts with innocent smiles on their faces, showing other people with innocent smiles on their faces, even fussing about many audience members wearing purple at once, all while the clock was slowly ticking, the tragedy was unfolding in more and more horror. If that variable is below average, the chances are it will increase back towards the average over time, hense overall the average remains constant. When I was a kid, I remember adults always talking about where they were when Kennedy was shot. That was well before my time. During 9/11, I was 20 years old and working in a hospital serving food to new parents in the OBGYN wing. They held their babies tight while their mouths were frozen open in shock at the TVs. I was standing in a patient's room when I watched the second tower collapse. After I served breakfast, the hospital was very quiet that day. None of the staff much said a word to each other and the patients didn't want conversation either. You could tell that we all wanted to go home, even though we wouldn't have felt any better there. I knew that day that it was the beginning of an end of innocence, that most people would want to sacrifice their freedom for a little bit of security. I knew because I wanted that too, even as I rationally knew what that would entail in the long run. Giuliani was a national hero at the time, covered in soot while trying to hold everything together and loved by all. What a different universe it was.

My husband and I were working as security guards up at the old Fort Ritchie that morning-the base had been closed and was being converted to civilian use, and we were working the roadblocks for the buried ordnance removal project they had going on. As we were driving to work that morning, we were both commenting on how it was such a BEAUTIFUL day, and we both wished we could play hooky and go boating on the river or spend a “daycation” fishing or whatever. Little did we know that less than an hour later, our day and our world would be turned upside down and inside out!
