People need to stop treating the 500 like a distance event and treat us as mid distance, approaching it more like a 200. Underwaters can really burn out the legs in an event like the mile or 1000 but at an elite level the 500 is too short or a race to not kick UW off of each wall

According to the conversion tool on SwimSwam, 4:02:31 in the 500y free converts to 3:36:26 in the 400m long course. That's nearly 4 seconds faster than the WR from the superset era. Now, I don't think Leon would swim a 3:36 but he has to be a challenge to that WR at some point in the near future.

I must agree with you here. Even going back to the 1980‘s, I can’t remember any performance that was so mind boggling as this one. Sure, for the era there were some big moments and drops of records and barriers, but to cut an own best time a few weeks old by almost four seconds is out of this world! I can’t wait to see Leon in Paris! I swam against his father back in the days…

@EricAngle7 ай бұрын
Many have said that Marchand "flies and dies", but I don't necessarily agree with that. I don't think I've ever seen Marchand truly die in a race. He really only takes this approach in SCY. In LCM, his races are more evenly split. I think we have this idea in swimming that if you're going to go a certain time there's a "right" way to split it. I've been guilty of this myself. But with the exception of some outliers (Michael Andrew falling apart at the end of a 200 IM), maybe we need to let go of this idea. Could Marchand have closed faster if he backed off the first half? Of course. But would his final time have been faster? That's all that really matters, and I'm not sure that it would've been faster. Marchand has that unique mix of "easy" speed and amazing endurance. He can take races out (again, at least in SCY) faster than everyone else and then close them about the same or even faster. To me, averaging < 50 seconds per 100 for the last 300 after going out in 1:33 to the feet is "just" coming home like everyone else after going out like an effing rocket. We have this idea that "well, but a 4:02 500 freestyler should be able to come home faster than 50.01," and maybe a "classic" middle distance freestyler should. Meanwhile, Marchand is leaving such folks in the dust. As you mentioned, we even think there's a right breathing pattern. Just like the pacing strategy, the extra breathing makes a ton of sense if you view this from an optimization perspective. He could choose not to breathe as much, but he couldn't stay under water as long. It's probably better for him to get the extra oxygen so that he can stay under for that much longer. If Bowman thought he shouldn't breathe as much, I'm sure he'd set Marchand straight. Even if you think Marchand flies and "dies", it takes balls to take a 500 free out in 1:33 to the feet knowing you aren't even half way done, and I respect that.
@olexy.skrypnik7 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the splits in SCY for Marchand wary by the turns quality, especially on freestyle. If he gets legs on the wall, squares up and pushes off into the best angle then he stays longer under and just slices through. On long-course there are fewer turns and they make much less percentage of the distance, so stroke itself will end-up evening out the differences in the turns quality.

@scuddlebug93827 ай бұрын
Personally I put Leon’s 500 as impressive for men along with Dressel’s 17.6 because at the time he was swimming, with no competition even close to him, the concept of breaking just 19 seconds was still a barrier not many were breaking. And even now with more and more training being geared to the 50 and swimmers being trained only for the 50 free, still no one is close to that record besides Crooks(barely) and now Liendo.
@scuddlebug93827 ай бұрын
I also think Leon’s 4 IM record is still the most insane NCAA record for men because the swimmer and versatility you need to accomplish what he did last year in that event is mind blowing and requires an unbelievable amount of training to be that good at all strokes to put that race together.

Caeleb dressel is still the greatest NCAA athlete of all time in my opinion, he broke barriers that most people hadn't even considered, 17.6 and 39.9 are the two most impressive records in the books and they're gonna last for a bit longer (until a stud like Maximus Williamson or Thomas Heilman gets into the system) but going out in an 18.96 on a 100 takes serious talent and bravery, and he was doing it at a time where going 40.9 was insane, 2nd place in that race was 41.07, really fast time, but caeleb dressel just was otherworldly, not to mention, it's the 4th day of setting insane generational records, unreal from caeleb dressel

4:08.75 for Dolan in 1995 is still further ahead of its time. This swim from Marchand is up there as an all-timer though
