I like the concept of them being stuck together as a heart and the emphasis on how Rose is affected by their divorce, but this version of the parents seemed like they still don't like each other and it lowkey has the vibe of "we'll stay together just for the kid's sake". But with a little rewriting, you could have them almost kiss and make up (as they do in the official last chapter), and then they jump into this finale to save Rosie. Or alternatively, they kiss and the spell doesn't break, they get frustrated but then realize the last piece to the puzzle is their love for Rose

The regular end feels kinda forced too though. The whole game is so openly anti-divorce, it’s always felt like it was made my a chile of divorced parents who never actually understood why their parents might not want to be together. Especially the singing chapter where May was so clearly uncomfortable

I’ve seen people that feel this way a ton and I’ve never understood it. The fact that the book never says fix their marriage, just their relationship, and the way the entire game pivots around Rose has always told me it was about their relationship, not their marriage. Of course this cut chapter only confirms that harder. I feel like maybe a lot of people get stuck up on the word relationship thinking relationship must mean romance, but it doesn’t. You have a relationship with your friends, enemies, all of that. The issue wasn’t that they were getting divorced, it was that they were so self absorbed in their hatred for eachother that they didn’t see how it affected Rose even when directly told and shown. Their relationship was horrid, they were pretty much enemies and they needed to fix that into a positive relationship. Whether that be married or just friends, they needed to at least show kindness for rose’s sake. And that’s how the ending plays out. They don’t say that they’re getting back together, just that they’re going to pay attention to Rose, they’re not gonna get so caught up in this dumb hatred that consumed them.

This makes a lot of sense. I thought it was weird that the paper pieces where never brought up again and how the relationship of them with their kid was never really adressed in the story. It also makes sense for it to be a horror kind of game as they had not done that yet and it makes sense from Rose's point of view

Rose thinks it’s her fault. I’ve been there. It. It’s just not right. You hear your name spoken/screamed in almost every fight. You begin to think like that. It completely destroys you. It took a great deal of time to come to the conclusion that it wasn’t my fault any more than it was my brother’s. I love my parents and both are happily remarried to amazing people. Sweetly and Funnily enough both of them married their high school sweethearts. Just like I’m married to mine. God blessed all of us with amazing people as partners. What’s kinda funny is my mom married a Micheal. So did I. “Micheal!” Both of them “yeah?” “Not you. Mine.”

I wish the basement level was implemented in the game, it looks so well made, even if unfinished, it visually expresses exactly how Rose feels when they fight, the horror elements of the level are a representation of that, and how the monster would attack Rose, that would be her mind thinking that they were fighting because of her.

@@skullbunnyt.hopper7658 I can understand your argument however I feel like it's normal for couples to fight at times, even more common after work which makes them distressed for the frustration, but I can also see why you would feel that way because of their actions throughout the game, but I feel like it's better if you consider someone's actions based on their future actions, not on their past actions, because from the way that the ending shows, it shows that they have improved a lot from what they were, and it was like that experience was therapy for them, which some people only understand what is to be in a good relationship when they actively need each other, and I feel like the internet most times only see a person based on their mistakes, when in fact you should see a person based on their improvements. That's my opinion on the matter, you can agree with me or not.

@@theantgre or maybe it was too fictional to add to the game, because on the game you have a meaning to why you're on that level, which would be because of Rose's toys, and as far as I know Rose doesn't have a dragon as a toy, and it would be weird to think that it would all be in her parent's minds since they would never think of themselves as a threat to Rose.

Maybe if this chapter was re-written it could've been part of the game. This chapter was replaced I'm guessing with the heaven chapter we got where May ends up singing at the end and their relationship gets united again. This alternative chapter could've happened sometime maybe before that chapter instead. This is to show us Rose's point of view with her parents fighting all the time, ignoring the chaos happening around them and allow the boss fight to appear in the game. After the boss fight, they can either: A - Find out the book was a lie like in the video here by not being a real therapist (which explains why in the ending Rose found the book in the trash). However, he reinsures them that he can still help them out. So he separates them from the heart, they give him a second chance, and then the entire heaven chapter plays with the ending we have in the original game where they find the letter on her bed, and etc. Or B: The book is not a lie and a real therapist, they separate from the heart, and then the rest of the heaven chapter played as usual with the ending we got and etc. My point being this alternative chapter would NOT be the ending of the game. It's ends with the scene we do have instead. But this chapter shows us how Rose feels being around her parents when they argue. What do some of you think?

(a year later but) It would have taken place after the singing chapter because it's about finding a "fifth" piece of the letter. I think it would have been stronger to show this at the end. They learned how to overcome their own problems throughout the game, but now they have to realize that their problems also affected Rose. The entire first half of the game is about them trying to hurt Rose, thinking it would fix things, and ending the game with them realizing they have been hurting Rose for much longer would have been a good bookend for the story. The current ending of the game also has them break the spell by just following what the book wants them to do, but this alternate ending has them break the spell by realizing what was wrong by themselves.

It's all in the voice. It allows them to block out animation timing without having to schedule extra recordings if the writing changes.

I like this a lot more than how it ends in the final product, if I'm being honest. The parents actually realize how selfish they were really being (which makes the first half of the game actually make a lot more sense), it doesn't put Hakim in the right for putting them through all that, it gives an actual climactic ending that uses the things Rose loves to stop the manifestation of their fighting.

This would have been the bad end. You still save Rose from making the mistake of running away but instead of reconciling with eachother and saving the marriage you end up reconciling with rose and would still end up divorcing. They avoided the topic of if they would become friends again or get divorce, answering with "Whatever happens with us, we'll still always be there for you" pushing focus on the fact that both will continue to be there for Rose, even if they did divorce.

This could be put after they kill Cutie and Rose cries. It seems the main theme of the level is about their arguments due to their conflicting personalities and pride, and how it affects Rose. It would be fitting, since they are meld together in an ugly heart cookie. It symbolises how at this point, their relationship is still crude, selfish, and ugly, but they're going to start truly working together as one, no matter how ugly their situation is.

I think it works best at the end, after they've already started working through their own personal problems. If it were at the middle, breaking the spell would have just been following the book's instructions, but this ending shows that they needed to learn something themselves to break the spell. This chapter would have also hit pretty hard because the entire second half of the game is focused on them and their problems, and it's only at the end that they see how much their problems have hurt Rose.

Holy shit... This left me shocked. Indeed, at the end of the game I thought, ok but, where's the final boss? And here it is! Of course, people that don't play many games, might have thought nothing was missing. But I knew it, and even A Way Out had a final boss. It's apparent that they were going to complete this ending, but surely while creating it they thought that "yeah this is way too dark to get the point across" and also, many kids were going to play this. I have no doubt that if they finished this way they would NOT have won GOTY. Good call on them To think, that many people were """""traumatized""""" by the elefant scene, just imagine what would have happened if they went with this instead..

My theory is that in the original script, developer actually make Hakim a bs book. In which he'd continue to give Cody and May a love trick and advice in which mean mostly nothing or mean something but rarely. He continue to give them hard time until the very end in which result in this ending where May said "We go through all this hell for what?" and them kicked Hakim's ass. Because think about it, bring me an example until Candy Factory section on Snow Globe in which he mentions "gratitude" between them in which'd be the one that begin to disputable and making point,that's the first time in which Hakim actually gave good advice or genuinely helping them. Before that, he'd put them in trouble (such as Vacuum boss by exposing May's vacuum purchase, or exposing their plan on Cutie to royal guard),decide to ignore their words (before the first activity between hammer and the box) or just overexcessive with them being lover (After Cuckoo Clock boss and before the Snow Globe level) Also, some of the thing he do or should do that makes zero sense. Before the last level in the final version, Hakim never revives us but then he did it in the slides before the final why? Not only that, remember, in the game we can actually "death" such as on boss fight or qte on some occasions, how could Hakim let that happened to us when in some occasions, it is proved to believe Hakim watching us all the time so we doe he didn't care and Rose lose her parent forever? what is this? Finally, he don't care about Rose, and I mean zero care, when Cody & May about to and finished take care of Cutie the book didn't warned or scolds them on their action. Not only that he seems to praise it as they are "collaborating" so yeah in my opinion this ending show what's coming to him. I bet they change because it's way too dark bit they probably gonna went with it almost to the final draft but decided to drop it, it'd have made more sense than the ending we got honestly and with the level like that it probably the second coming of legendary scene after Cutie's death. Overalls game is great and deserve for its award but my criticism is remain that the ending at May's passion which is just suddenly to be about singing and Hakim who never pays for his sin that's all that is to it.

I believe this is moreso he was trying to get them to listen and work together first before the whole therapy parts start. And him reviving them was probably happening the whole game, he just does it visually for the Rainbow Road part as part of the reference to Mario Kart that segment was.

i think this ending is nice and all, but it takes away from the story. it makes dr. hakim look like the bad guy, when really he was just trying to help mend cody and may's relationship, and that didn't even seem like it worked. they still lacked romantic attraction as opposed to the original ending where they broke the spell with a heartfelt kiss. in this ending it seems like they just say "oh no it's not her fault it's ours, we only thought about ourselves!! lets go fix it!!" instead of actually making up. i know the point is to focus on the fact they only thought about themselves, but children are not a part of marriages, and while you do need to consider your children when discussing divorce it's more important to think about the couple and why they want to divorce. this ending just feels odd in that sense, it's like the game is telling you that focusing on children is the way to go, when that's really not how it works. the couple will still face conflict with each other and they will not be happy. children do not guarantee a joyous, romantic, and healthy marriage. again, i know this ending needed work and was only a draft, but it still was not the right ending. we would have been left with "but what happens to cody and may?? do they love each other again?" because we didn't get to see a kiss or anything symbolizing romance.

After having played through the game twice I have to say I'm glad they scrapped this. I don't think it works tonally with the rest of the game at all. And having Dr. Hakim go from a love expert, to fraud back to being vindicated in the space of 2 minutes is such a pointless and confusing character arc to introduce so late on. Conceptionally I get why they tested it out; as it helps to amplify Rose's mental health and why she would run away. But we already know from the very start of the story that she's upset by their arguing, making this level somewhat redundant story-telling wise.

Yeah, no, I don't like this one. I prefer the real ending. I didn't like how they found out that Dr. Hakim is fake like this, and they pushed him down the stairs. It was much better when Rose told them about how she got the book. It was quite funny. In this ending, when they pushed him, their redemption arc from the clock chapter up to May's passion chapter went down the drain. In this alternate ending, the family's sentimental moment in the bus stop didn't hit as hard as it did in the original, canon version. The concept about playing a level about Rose's trauma of her parents fighting is a pretty good concept, but not as a final level. Maybe if they put it after the elephant castle, after she cried, then it would've worked better.

I’m not 100% against the darker tone of that section per se (divorce with children involved isn’t a happy thing after all) and it could have been a really poignant point of the story, but I prefer the ending we have over what I saw here. I really didn’t like their attempt at a “Dr Hakim reveal” and his finding of self-confidence within himself, im glad they cut that out, that was so dumb and awful. He was a great one-dimensional character; he’s the heart of the story and humanizing him the way they did here was bad. In short, thanks to the editor; you cut some real dog-shit story from a great game!

its cool and all , but this ending is a bit.. bad for me lol glad they went the other end this implies some bad things -being self published is not worth and youre a farse -in a heart together, you need to work together not because you want but because youre stuck in a relationship -they fought way worse than shown before, a very toxic house that the kid really shouldnt live in -they acted like at the start, dont feel like progression, and ended together to selfless for the kid, not a good way to think in the long run -technically, when working together in the heart part, they were helping the kid run away from home , from the monster they were/are althought if the original idea was that the love book was a fraud like i thought it would be , the bad message in the end where its blaming them for their divorce makes sense, therapy with a specialist is the best idea 😅
