At the start of AC Rogue, you can actually trigger an alternate cutscene where Shay Cormac takes an air attack on his assassin friend Liam O'Brien. All you have to do is skip the main path the game suggests and sneak up on him from behind instead of going for the air attack, if I remember correctly. 😉

Neither side is good or bad, this was explained in one of the games(for the life of me, I can't remember which). They simply have different ideals and values. Both have also done amazing things for humanity, where the Templars caused 2 revolutions(reinventing democratcy) and the assassin's ended many bad people for the betterment of humanity. In truth they are actually very alike. Both orders belive in a vision to help humanity. However their methods to achieving it, are what makes them different. One supports order and control, they belive to keep humanity safe, everything must be controlled. The other belives in chaos and freedom. They belive, that even though humanity should be safe, they must have the freedom to choose. With this knowledge, it makes sense they will sometimes seem similar. The pillars of Earth, was considered a possible weapon, to remove some unwanted opposition(the other order). Which both orders consider necessarry to complete their vision for humanity.

Because in this game, the Assassins particularly Achilles, are becoming desperate to win against the Templars that they're becoming no better than what they thought them to be. 3, Rogue and Unity do blur the lines between Assassins and Templars.

In AC2, if you explore the Auditore family tomb, you discover that Italian Templars, when interrogating Ezio’s ancestor, took turns raping his wife until she stopped screaming, and then threw her naked body into the ocean. In AC Rogue the Templar mourned the Assassin’s wife and son in silence for what he has to do. I love Ezio trilogy but the American AC games are just better when it comes to portraying the Templar-Assassin conflict with nuance and complexity. Templars aren’t cartoonish villains who enjoy inflicting suffering on others for no reason, they are fundamentally people who want to perfect the human society, just with a different philosophy.

If you look around you will see some of the assassins moving around out of sight to avoid Shay seeing them which shows that after his outburst against Achilles when he return from the precursor temple Achilles set up precautions cause he felt Shay was gonna turn on them which further shows how corrupt Achilles branch of the assassin order had become cause they prepped to kill one of their own based on a suspicion caused by him having a normal reaction to Achilles wanting to open more temples that would cause disasters and kill thousands of innocent people

Pretty sure that Odyssey and Valhalla are bad even when you ARE playing as a dude tho, so the writing and design should be blamed for making a mediocre game, not the gender of characters.
