Idk if anyone suggested it yet but, you can put the defensive walls around to prevent pals from falling in the water. I made a base near the small cove fast travel and put a defensive wall up around the base lining n had 2 of those huge stone doors that have ore rocks right outside. I got tired of my pals wondering off when they taking a break if they not in the hot springs.

You can also raise the foundation a little bit higher so that the rocks that are higher in elevation will cover it completely and will get you a more plane base and more space to build

Lol my personal base looks like 3 windows 1 floor 1 roof no door ots wide open with 1 bed amd 3 big chests outside alone 1 window

Here's a tip: If you wanna build a "walkway", make sure to point your mouse as far as possible, and you'll see the stone platforms kinda sink into the ground.
