So a bit ago, people, including me, were recommending the Crests to you guys. The lead singer Johnny Maestro is one of those guys who transitioned from 1950s doo-wop to this later-1960s incarnation with the Brooklyn Bridge. I have been in love with this man's voice from the Crests til his passing. Thank you SO much. So glad you swerved out into left field for this one, Amber!!

The magical voice is the late Johnny Maestro. He was also the lead singer of “the Crests” and sang the hit “16 Candles” do-wop song in 1959. His voice was young then but powerful. This was late 60’s.

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap is a band you might enjoy from the 60s. "Young Girl", "Lady Willpower" - GP had a voice very similar to this guy and the music style is very close.

I have every CD I could find of The Crests. I met them when I was 9. One Hit Wonder, Larry Hall (Sandy), was my older brother’s best friend and Larry had The Crests and other 50’s groups over for parties at the house he bought near us in Orange County, CA. My favorite song by them is ‘The Angels Listened In’ because they sang it on American Bandstand. Larry sang ‘Sandy’, and Santo and Johnny performed their HUGE hit ‘Sleep Walk’. I’ll NEVER forget it!

I went to school with the younger brother of Rob Leonard from Sha Na Na. He and Rob had all these doo-wop records in their house. I would recommend Harri listen to Kenny Vance's "Looking For An Echo" but it's probably way out of left field for him.

The Ed Sullivan Show was THE show to get on to be seen back in the day. ES himself was a writer and man-about-town who was up on all the happening acts in NYC at the time. Anyone on ES would get a lot of attention and it was a career maker. Much more than today where everybody is online and acts have a lot of venues to be seen on. Back in the day there was only three TV channels. Period.

Johnny Maestro had been around for a long time going back to the Crests with their great hit 16 Candles and the Del Satins. Some other great early hits were The Angels Listened In and Step by Step. You could say his roots were in the doo-wop era of the late 1950's. John Mastrangelo was a Lower East Side kid. In 1960 he left the Crest and formed The Brooklyn Bridge and the rest is history. I was lucky enough to meet him more than a few times while I was DJ'ing back then. His voice live was exactly the same as his recorded sessions. Just amazing.

1968. Lead singer is Johnny Maestro who was the lead singer of a group called the Crests who had a hit with Sixteen Candles (another song you might want to listen to). Brooklyn Bridge was a bit of a comeback for him, but it didn't go far. Ed Sullivan had a variety show and a lot of performers worked to get on the show because of the wide Sunday night audience. Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and so many more appeared on that show and the theater it was produced from is now named for Ed.

I remember this playing on the radio as a kid. They had another song I liked more called "Welcome Me Love". Reminds me of other pop songs of my youth. Stuff like "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" from Edison Lighthouse and "Count Me In" and "This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Another band with one female member is Kenny Rogers' old band The First Edition. They had a big hit with "Just Dropped in to See What Condition My Condition Was In". If you want a good story song, try " Patches" by Clarence Carter.

Growing up Ed Sullivan was a big part of our Sunday evenings. We had 5 channels total, so not like today. ES was a variety hour with different acts. ES often brought in bands for his young audience like Brooklyn Bridge. ES was also where we had our first look at the Beatles when they came here in 1963. This was such a great choice. 1969… I have known this song since I was in 9th grade in 1969. As a 16 year old, I loved it. My heart broke for the guy. I still love it, but l am now 68-year-old I had different attitude until I googled the story behind the song. “The Worst That Could Happen” came from the prolific songwriting pen of Jimmy Webb, who was inspired by the actual experience of having a former flame marry someone else.” Something else I read made sense because I thought I heard the horns having an awesome note in your video . This is what I read as well Maestro doesn’t finish the line with a “to me” this last time, as he’s replaced by some brass blaring out “The Wedding March.” In this context, those triumphant notes are like daggers. I was born in 1980 and by the early 90s I was listening to my own music such as Metallica, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, etc... however, I grew up listening to all of the music from the 50's, 60's and 70's as that was my parent's generation of music. As I got a little older and into my early to mid 20s... I've come to the conclusion that the music from the late 50s into the early 70s, especially the 60s was and is the best era of all time for music! Just pick nearly any random song from the 60s and there's about a 95% chance that it will not disappoint you!

I love all genres of music, but I have to agree with you...music from the 50s, 60s and 70's was the best ! I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and by the time I was 21 in 1980, music had just begun to change. And by the late 80's, I was glad that I had recorded all the great songs I grew up with onto cassettes. I estimate at least a total of 500 songs. Unfortunately, DVDs replaced most of the songs I once had, but at a huge cost.

One of my favorite stories about Johnny Maestro (Mastrangelo) who was from Brooklyn is when he came home as a teen with contracts to be signed. “A singing contract?” Sal Mastrangelo, his father, shook his head, turning from one page to the next. “How can you sing? You barely talk.” Maestro was called the Perry Como of rock and roll because he was so laid back.

Singer Johnny Maestro was in a couple of bands in the 50s as well. While with The Crests, he shared vocal duties with a young woman named Patricia Vandross. She had a little brother named Luther. Patricia ended up having to quit the band though when they started getting opportunities to tour some clubs etc. Her mother did not want her on the road with guys that age as she was only 15 at the time. The Crests were also one of the very first interracial bands of the day.

Thinking about it that whole era, the "Showtune" style you might expect more out of broadway musicals than say pop music was much more public than today it seemed like. Btw, for holloween I "carefully' recommend 'Time Warp' off the Rocky Horror Picture Show or Warren Zevon "Werewolves of London" .... although if the girls are put to bed early and you keep it low... the song that follows 'Time Warp' is Satirical -(meant to be laugh out loud funny)- and utterly weird but it's still my favorite of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Pre-screening would BE appropriate, NSFW content to it. ;-)

Oh, this one is a tearjerker, for sure. A man is torn between loving a woman and knowing that he isn't the best choice for her because he doesn't want to get married. This was a big issue back in the late 60's, as co-habiting was becoming a thing. And the man knows that this woman won't be content to live together. She wants the ring, the gown, the whole thing and he can't or won't give it to her. The great Jimmy Webb wrote this gem, by the way.

This is one of my favorite songs. Loved his voice and the story the song told. I could be wrong, but I think you guys are the only ones that have reacted to this song on You Tube. Kudos to the person that recommended it to you, because it was a great one! This song came out around 1968 or 1969. Yeah, the fashions started getting a little out there . . . the ruffles on men were in vogue. And most likely "when that girl got married" the groom was wearing a ruffled shirt under his tuxedo with a big huge bow tie.

Johnny maestro was the best doo wopp singer. His voice was amazing. He performed to very end of his life. Passing at the age of 70 2010. His voice never faild him. Rip mr maestro of singing. This sure takes me back. It was a great song. A very big hit. Thanks for playing it. The reason so many artist had great voices back then was because the technology was simple. The mics were simple and it didn’t matter what you looked like just so you have genuine talent. We mostly just heard them on the radio we didn’t see them too often.

All right guys since you did this reaction to Mr Johnny Maestro I have to say that it is a shame that the Rock & Roll Hall of fame for some insane reason has passed over him. He had a ton of hit songs with the Crests and with the Brooklyn Bridge. And not even to mention his contributions to Acapella. Maybe you can do some promotion for him.

Yes, Jay Black was singing when he was almost 80 years old still and sounded great... He was classically trained and had a powerful voice with great control... I really hope to hear Jay Black and the Americans soon... Cara Mia...

Others may have told you about this in the many comments, but in case not, you should look up "Step By Step" by The Crests. Johnny Maestro of Brooklyn Bridge was their lead singer, and that was one of their hits, along with their signature hit "16 Candles." The Crests was quite an integrated group for the day; Maestro the Italian, with the backup singers being Black and Hispanic. It's a great vocal harmony, great showmanship, and they dressed like classy gentlemen. Again, I really enjoy your channel!

WOW! I forgot how good that song was, how much I loved it. Great choice! As for Ed Sullivan, he was the host of a weekly, hour-long variety series that aired at 8pm Sunday nights, eastern time, from June of 1948 - the very beginning of broadcast television - to March 28, 1971. Just about everyone watched the show throughout the country. He introduced all kinds of performers, from all sorts of genres, & always had something for every member of the family. Elvis became a star on the Ed Sullivan Show. The country was introduced to The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show -- 73 million people in 1964 watched their first appearance!! You've reacted to at least a few songs that were taken from the artists' appearances on the show. The Beatles song you played for your daughters to react to, Twist And Shout (if I remember correctly) was from The Ed Sullivan Show. BTW - Twist And Shout was originally, & brilliantly done originally by The Isley Brothers, another group of three biological brothers you would both definitely enjoy. The Beatles version was a cover. In that era, a performer knew they "made it" if they got on The Ed Sullivan Show. That was where most of us got to see our favorite performers while we were growing up. The show held the same allure for our parents & grandparents, & beyond. Can you guys even picture what I'm saying? The whole family gathered around one TV, all watching together, hearing & seeing the best singers, musicians, comedians, jugglers, dancers, animal acts, magicians, etc, etc, etc. Those were the days, my friend, for quality family time.

This Jimmy Webb song was originally recorded by the Fifth Dimension (The Magic Garden Album) with Billy Davis Jr. singing the lead. Because the record company decided that Billy's (wife to be) Marilyn McCoo was going to be the lead voice of the group, they did not release the song as a single.
