One of the interesting things about learning a new language is learning a new way of thinking. This video teaches five different words in Spanish that all get translated into "was" in my native English. There is an old saying in American English that the Eskimo has over 100 words for snow and they all mean something different. So learning Spanish teaches us new ways of thinking about the past. Great and for me at least it "was" a much thought provoking video.

That's why some say that speaking a second language is like having a second soul, definitively a language tells a lot about people's idiosyncrasy, in that sense English is a more practical and pragmatic language than Spanish just like the people who speak it. If the question is asked: como fue la fiesta? The questioner is generally asking for a short description of the party such as , it was great,it was bad. If the question is asked: como era la fiesta? The questioner is asking for a great deal more information such as how was the food, who attended, how was the music, etc. both era and fue may be used depending on the amount of detail the questioner wants.

I’m a native Spanish speaker and the sentence “¿cómo fue la fiesta?” sounds very strange to my ear. I would say “¿cómo estuvo la fiesta?” or “¿qué tal estuvo la fiesta?” If I used the construction “cómo era la fiesta” is because I’m probably telling a dream I just had related to a party or a get -together, and somebody asked me “¿como era la fiesta?” specifying how was the party in my dream. Only in that context this sentence can sound natural.

Thanks so much for this, it's very useful. It will take a bit of work for me as I find trying to decide what qualifies for which version a bit tricky. For instance, if I want to say that the episode of a TV series I just watched was great, would I use fue, as it is a particular moment? Or is it an object that can change depending on the episode therefore I should use estaba? Sorry if I am getting this totally wrong 🙄😁
@LearnSpanishLearnSpanish4 жыл бұрын
You are asking the right questions. Firstly, you can eliminate estaba, because you want to mention the qualities of the object (episode) - so adjectives like interesante, fenomenal, divertido etc don't get used with estaba (estar). The one exception to that would be if you want to say 'it was OK' in which case "estaba bien". So that leaves era and fue. As mentioned in the video if you opt for 'era' when unsure, you will mostly be right because there is a degree of interchangeability. In the the example you give, it could easily be either because there is some perspective involved. Are you describing the 'event' you experienced (fue) or are you ascribing a quality to the episode (era)? So, basically both would be perfectly correct!

Going the other way for Spanish people learning English, imagine how difficult it must be for them to wrap their head around how English has just one word for ‘to be’ in the imperfect and preterit tenses for inherent qualities and states. As a Spanish learner, once you grasp the notion that ‘to be’ really does have two distinct meanings, which Spanish separates as ser and estar, you’ll have made a big leap forward.
@seuntimilehin33812 ай бұрын
Unless i misunderstood your comment how exactly would it be hard? Wouldn't it make it easier to learn English if there's only one word for to be in the imperfect and preterit tenses for inherent qualities and states? In the same way, English only has one word for estuve, fue era and estuvo
@blueface456Ай бұрын
English is easy to pick up on because you will hear the same words over and over. But spanish has a different way to say one word. He was she was I was the word was pops up every time. But in spanish the word "was" is pronounced 40 different ways. That makes it difficult to catch on to. But vice versa,having only one way to say it makes it easy to catch on. English is hard if you plan on getting a degree in college. But if all you want to do is talk, then it's easy.

So estaba is used to describe a temporary condition in the past the same way está is used to describe a temporary condition in the present (other conjugations as well, in both past and present). I would use estuvo to describe a temporary condition in the past that had a specific time reference and was completed in the past. For example: Él estuvo en la biblioteca ayer desde las dos hasta las tres en la tarde. I don’t think estaba used in this context would be correct because it’s normally used without reference to a starting or ending time.

@LearnSpanishLearnSpanish2 жыл бұрын
Era interesante is fine. Era would be used here because what the film was like is not a event but the occasion (trip to see a film) is like an even. Another example: the beach was nice - la playa era bonito. And my trip there was fun - mi excursión a la playa fue divertida.
