He wrote to the shop and Geoff dropped off a personally signed picture and left it at the hospital reception ( as he had to get back to London ). Imagine my reaction to receive this act of kindness….My mood changed, I recovered and finally got to thank Geoff personally at his theatre event when he did a sports evening at Cheltenham Town Hall. Where VAR should really be most helpful is in offside decisions. It was always an impossible task for the linesman to simultaneously watch the player with the ball AND the back line and in the time taken to turn one's head an attacker can gain a couple of yards on a defender. It's amazing people got it right as often as they did, but it's crazy when TV viewers know far better what's going on on the pitch than the officials do. However, they've ruined the whole process by reducing it to microscopic differences - a finger tip or toe. If any decision is not clear almost immediately then play on. Another option would be to allow each club a certain number of appeals per half and per match (they'd have their own people watching the game, to know when something unfair occurs) and play goes on unless there's a formal appeal. A similar error is being made over handball, to the point where nobody knows anymore what is and what isn't handball. Since controlling the ball on one's chest needs a margin of error, the shoulder has to be okay and the upper arm, if it's close to the chest, should also be legit, while the elbow down is handball.

I was so annoyed with Roger Hunt, the player nearest the bouncing ball, because instead of smashing it in (and eliminating any possible doubts) he turned around with his hands in the air to celebrate. Speaking of which, is Geoff going to talk about how he allowed the ball (from Mullery, I think) to go between him and the goalpost in Mexico - I now see he dodged that one. England were 2-0 up and dominating the game and it would've finished W. Germany off to have scored that third. Then we'd have faced Italy in the SF and Brazil in the final! It was a better team than in 1966 imho, but beating that Brazilian team may have been an impossible task.

You have got a problem. The ball was just over the line and it was known back then, but you have to see the high definition movie film from ground level looking straight along the line and not from an angle, which does exist but has rarely been shown in documentaries. You cannot make a decision based on the fuzzy black and white TV pictures that are always shown, as the image is just not clear enough. Rattin had only himself to blame because he couldn't stop arguing with the referee. I would agree that England were not the best team in 1966, however they deserved to win the final on the day, and any idea that tournament was fixed in their favour is frankly ludicrous and doesn’t bear scrutiny. The host nation at a World Cup has always had an advantage, not only playing in front of the home crowd but also the pressure it puts on referees. I doubt whether West Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978 would have won the World Cup had they not staged it. By the way there was no toe poke by Charlton.
