Have you watched Maou Yuusha before? A love story between the Demon King and the Hero. It is one of my favorite classic fantasy romance stories. It gives off a similar feeling to Freiren but on a shorter span since it only has 1 season. As for a story that has an opposite spin to Freiren but with the same level of storytelling as Freiren, I would recommend Somali and the Forest Spirit.

So _Frieren_ hits me in two different ways. I'm a huge nerd for storytelling, so the series has been a treat and a learning experience. At the same time, _Frieren_ has been cathartic after losing several people in the last couple of years. I didn't realize how bad I was until I broke down during EP1. But that's the beauty of this series. It shows you that life can go on. I feel like I am in a better place than I was. Also cannot wait for Season 2.
@captainnerd64523 күн бұрын
I get the same cathartic feeling, I lost my brother who was 86 a couple of months before I found the manga and broke down reading it. Also had it hit even harder watching the anime. I'm 66 and I've lost so many family and friends in the past few years, and even though my parents have been gone for decades, their loss has never truly healed completely. Age and loss and how to deal with that, as I'm nearer to my own end than I used to be, has been something I've been working on.

great point that frieren makes you cry not from shock value or trauma. it makes you cry because it's just beautiful I think the wirbel x frieren conversation is a great metaphor for the show itself. This anime is just like the stories about the small deeds of Himmel the Hero in random villages instead of the stories about slaying dragons or powerful demons. It's not a big battle shounen with high stakes and insane moments all the time, instead it's a story about life and relationships and all the little things. This is why I think this show resonated with so many people. thanks for the reactions. can't wait for season 2

You'll see when Frieren says her farewells to the girls she says "See you later" which is what she always says to people she knows will be around to meet her again. The only time we've seen her say goodbye afaik is to the old dwarf that was going senile. She could tell she wouldn't see him again so she said "Goodbye". It's kinda touching that Frieren always intends to see people again even if it is years of even decades down the line. As Himmel said "tearful goodbyes aren't our style"

I love the scene with Lernen. He thinks he has to do something special, to go down in history, for Serie to remember him. But it is the small things she will remember. Like Frieren who remembers Himmels favorite flower or him saying a quick goodbye. It is those small moments that create a true bond.
@Much_Ado3 күн бұрын
it's not just about Serie being willing to remember him, it's about having people in general remember Series through the students she took on. @@Harrybarnawhat? No, he couldn't see the fluctuations in her mana. I don't know why you even got this idea. But later in the show you'll know how incredibly skilled Serie is with her mana concealment. Lernen couldn't see anything at all.

We have experienced the show with Frieren's pacing. The director showed us how she perceives time. So in the end when Himmel turned his glance backwards he was not saying the line to Frieren alone but to us as well. Not only this but the last scene with Himmel turning his back with the cape is the same we see in his funeral. Only after this scene Frieren started crying realizing that they won't see each other again, so she won't be embarrassed . She remembered the "embarrassing line " on Himme's funeral. Add to this her initial reaction to Eisen request to her to see Himmel - "I don't want to particularly see him right now" most probably cause she would be embarrassed after she cried at his funeral. The director Keiichirou Saitou is genius in it's purest meaning of the word!
@DarwinAwardWinner3 күн бұрын
I think you're spot on with saying it's about human connection. As I watched your reaction to this episode, I realized that this episode (after finishing up the exam) is just hitting that same theme in about five different ways. We have multiple examples of people who made, or who could have made, major contributions to history, and the show is saying something very clear about which kinds of contributions that are remembered. Flamme's plan to kill the demon king is basically forgotten, while her flower spell is remembered by Frieren and Serie, as well as everyone Frieren has shown it to. Himmel defeated the demon king, and he also helped people out in small ways along his journey. He admitted that helping out the locals "won't change the world", but then we hear from Wirbel that it was literally those small acts that did change the world, not his defeat of the demon king. Lernen is a powerful battle mage who wants Serie to remember him as the one who defeated Frieren. But Frieren knows that Serie will remember him regardless, because even if Serie herself doesn't understand how or why, she feels a connection to every one of her students. Denken is a powerful battle mage, but the only reason he's here is because he wants to honor that one human connection that was cut tragically sort. Even the scene with Stark saying goodbye to the townspeople hits on this theme. In this story, even if people are nominally remembered for great deeds like killing the demon king, the reason people actually remember them is because of those human (and elven/dwarven) connections and the small acts they performed to make those connections. Going beyond this episode, the demons tie into this theme nicely as well. Basically, you could say that their "fatal flaw" is a complete, fundamental inability to form those kinds of human connections. They're basically the negative example for what happens in when you don't have such connections.

There is wonderful video essay called "When you tell an entire story in 9 minutes". It explains how Frieren is written and why it has no fillers. The writing follows something called "bracketed ideas". The show is structured in a way that it builds its setups very meticulously and preemptively which allows for the pay-off to be very satisfying and not artificially shoehorned afterwards. Not only this but the pay-offs does not end up there. They continues being explored and having impact in other episodes which add nuances to the themes, character and the world. And this is why there are no fillers in this show. Because everything - from Fern and Stark catching fish, to Frieren saying random quote like "I am used to loosing things" have meaning in the whole picture. Another thing is that the show is grounded and realistic. A lot of people fall into the trap of the anime tropes while watching it - expecting power levelling, flexing and screaming who is who, which lead to someone getting stronger etc. But here the struggles are internal. For example very few people noticed how throughout the series Fern was shown several times to pass very nervously between ridges on wooden logs. This represents her lack of confidence in herself. The relationships are very human like, instead of being hyperbolic and on the nose. Every action has consequences in the world the show is developed. For example Frieren saying "I know" to Fern in ep.17 when holding her hand for 2nd time. We were shown preemptively how Frieren still see Fern as a kid, it showed why Fern felt embarrassed, it gave us their perspectives and also added Stark's one and the origin of holding the hand. So when Frieren said this quote it was build comprehensively. There was no need of 5 mins of verbal explanation or internal dialog who feels what. We saw how the setup and payoffs were build in front of us. This is something which is hard to find in other animes. And I watched over 500 of them.

As someone who's been watching anime since childhood, Frieren has been a breath of fresh air. The anime strikes you with an affective catharsis one moment, then gently makes you laugh with a light joke while you're still wiping away tears in your eyes, the next. It perfectly encapsulates the idea of how even though our past experiences have a role in shaping who we are today, we are not forever defined by or bound to who we were or what we did or didn't do back when, and through reflection and and will it is never too late to learn from those past experiences and change your nature.

A great journey with you and Frieren: Flexie, it's been so delightful to see your reactions and insights on the show! Hope season 2 wait won't be too long, maybe end of this next year 😢 In the meantime I really recommend reading the manga it has the same lovely vibes and you won't be regretting having look ahead when you see it adapted to anime, on the contrary you can savor details more in depth.

Wasn't a big fan of reactions, nor did I get what the big hype about that show with the elf granny was...now I get it. Midway I started watching the full episodes from the start. And even though I knew what was coming - or maybe because of it- I cried again. Along with you. Thank you. Your insight also helped me to get a better grip on the show, and details I might missed. Now, as is customary *insert joke about having to wait a mere X years for season two here*

PS: I coudln't agree more - it might seem like a 'filler' if you were to describe it to people who don't know. But everything was done with purpose... damn, now I need to lower my standards after watching Frieren, otherwise I wouldn't be able to enjoy other show not up to that standard. But then again, there are other show that shine more with an interesting ideo, different genre, or simply a kind of thrill and suspense that a 'relatively slow paced' show like frieren doesn't have (and perhaps didn't even need). Frieren is the kind of soul food I really lacked in the last years. I doubt I'll stop rewatching or checking other peoples reaction to it.

Frieren inspired one of the most heartfelt songs I've ever written. I read the first volume on a whim, during a time in my life where a couple people in my life had died recently. I hadn't even really cried over it yet. I got to the point where she puts the flower crown on Himmel's statue, set the book down and just wept. It's time we have, and time we share It's time we've lost, and time we cared In time we'll laugh, in time we'll cry It's times small moments that shape my life Thank you for your time Frieren really reminds you appreciate the people in your life.

Thanks for sharing your entire journey - you are a special reactor and your thoughts and empathy shined throughout the series. I don't really watch other anime but if there is something that catches my interest I'd love to watch your thoughts. I cant wait to see season 2 with you. Rewatching this series with you at the helm was awesome and you definitely made me appreciate some things more in the rewatch.

There were tons of questions you had in your reactions during this season and I wanted to answer them badly but I was so afraid to spoil things so it was hard to be patient and not answering. Wow, now I can take a break. :P. I started from anime, after season1, I couldn't wait, so I started to read it on on-line manga, but that didn't satisfy me, so I bought all the manga published at this moment. Reading the manga version is a Joy too, I can look back to where ever I want, so it helps to follow foreshadows, but the most significant differences are, manga doesn't make me cry but Anime does. See "knowing" something is very different to "experiencing" something. especially the music they put at the perfect timing, it always get me. especially "Anytime Anywhere" touches so much anytime anywhere. I've become so used to crying with it that not only am I no longer embarrassed, but I can proudly say, "Oh, so You haven't seen Frielen yet." to my friends with a gentle smile.

I noticed a fun little detail about Fern choosing the laundry spell. The only time she almost died during the show was when Lügner did his surprise attack. He was only able to track her and surprise her because she had his blood on her clothes. So Fern almost died because of dirty clothes. It makes sense that she would choose a laundry spell

It was a pleasure re-watching this show with you, thanks for checking it out. I read that the director of the anime read the first chapter of the manga and was so emotionally struck by it that he focused on trying to recreate those feelings in the anime, to great success. I think the anime even improved on a few scenes and storylines here and there. That director is coming back for Season 2, and having read ahead in the manga, I can nearly guarantee we've got an incredible season coming up. Excited!

I picked Frieren up on a whim, because I love classic fantasy and I love Dnd. And while all the great things people talk about are true, for me it is a reflection of how Dnd can feel. You just spend time with your friends, doing random stuff, going shopping, having talks about fear by a fire, and then exploring a dungeon and you're not allowed to go down the stairs until you've seen all the rooms! There could be loot! And on your way to defeat the demon king you do random side quests, because we all need gold and it'd be rude to ignore the old lady with her crates. But also Frieren just helped me slow down. I have ADD, and I struggle with watching anime (even with subtitles) without doing anything on my phone. But Frieren managed to make me appreciated its slowness and its mundane moments and it's beautiful.

24:00 That is such a real point. We basically had half of a season of "beach episodes" and other types of filler episodes in general, and I would have watched 3 seasons of the same thing. I think that it works because the show doesn't have a typical plot, but our plot is to know the characters and follow Frieren in her rediscovery of her journey. Therefore, all the "filler episodes" are actually advancing the plot for us in very subtle but effective ways. In other shows, filler episodes are completely disconnected from what makes the show tick, and thus they always feel boring and irrelevant.

Can't wait for second season! What a masterpiece of a show. I teared up at Himmel walking towards the light. Couldn't help but remember his funeral, and Frieren sobbing at that same image, probably remembering that same phrase too, realizing they won't ever meet again (Until Flamme saved the day ofc). About what else to watch, you already covered almost all my favorites this year, so I wouldn't know what to recommend. My top 5 would be Frieren > Dandadan > Oshi no Ko > Apothecary Diaries > Dungeon Meshi.

The 2nd season of the anime is currently in production by MADHOUSE. Look forward to it !☺ And I recommend this anime,"Natsume's Book of Friends" (Natsume Yūjin-chou) . A sad yet warm story about high school students and apparitions living in the countryside.

the interviews are so good, Serie smiling ear to ear while hearing Wirbel saying magic is a tool for killng is quite scary, you know she processed like a million killing spells while smiling. Also can we talk about how Land goes to meet the strongest mage who ever lived and first thing he does is trying to troll her? Not only that, when he gets called out he doubles down on the troll 🤣 Serie kinda enjoyed it tho, cheeky youngsters are up her alley it seems, meanwhile Ubel just gets the psycopath pass :D

Many people say that the storytelling of this anime is wonderful, but in fact, all of it is in the original comic books, and the words are 99.9% the same. Therefore, the original author should be praised. However, in the anime adaptation, there were some slight additions and developments to adjust the time and explain the scenes, and they have been highly praised by comic readers. For example, in the final episode, the evening before Fern meet Serie, Richter sees Fern shocked at her broken wand in front of his shop, and asks her, "Aren't you Frieren's disciple?", and Fern hesitates and doesn't answer. This scene added, and her wand repaired with effort of Frieren, Fern says to Serie "I am Frieren's disciple" definetely.

I have loved watching this reaction series, in part because your reactions have been so similar to mine. I, too, am obsessed. So many things are called masterpieces but this almost redefines the term. There isn't a single weak episode, weak scene or weak character. The only things I have seen that come close (series or film, anime or not) are Your Name and Violet Evergarden, and I think this beats them both. How on Earth can you pick a favourite episode or character? It's like choosing between your children!

"There are no side characters, everyone is important." - One of the greatest things about Freiren is that its consistant within itself about the messages it sets out. Thats a huge theme in Freiren, that everyone is important. Doesn't matter if they are a king, a lord, a shop keeper, a little kid... everyone is important. Even if they aren't important to you, they are to someone. A Frieren does a great job of showing that with by making even small characters important somehow.

Thanks for watching up to episode 28! Now that you've seen this far, I'll give you an earful. In fact, there is a reaction in the first episode that only those who have seen the 28th episode will notice! There are others if you look for them, but I think this is the easiest one to understand, so I hope you will take a look at it.

Every time I watch this ending, I'm in tears. If there was never to be a second season, I'd say it would be the perfect sendoff. But then again, it _would_ be embarrassing if there were. Reaction channels really exploded in the last few years (for obvious and some non-obvious reasons). I think Frieren was the truly the breakwater show of them all, and I specifically went out of my way to watch every reactions I could. I think it'll be a real stampede when S2 starts. With S1, not everyone got on the train on time, but I think a lot of people will push that content hard now. It'll be many weeks of me watching the episode, then within a few days rewatch it again twenty times via these channels.

Frieren is the only anime I’ve ever watched that I’d call perfect. Even when I want to nitpick, I can’t find a single flaw. It’s a pure work of genius, a once in a generation masterpiece. “That DIDN’T rely on trauma” I think everyone got PTSD from the Shibuya Incident 😅.

Your intro made me tear up 😢😢 Thanks Himmel..... err, I mean, Flexie!! 😅😅 It's been an incredible journey!! Thank you so much for sharing it with me and the rest of the community 💞💞 Can't wait for Season 2!!!!! Edit: For a recommendation, I would like to suggest to you "Fruits Basket" (2019) - this is the newer reboot which concludes the story (and not the original which is left unfinished and is not needed to enjoy the newer one). When I describe Frieren to people I describe it as Fruits Basket + Lord of the Rings. So, if you take out all the fantasy and D&D elements of of Frieren, that's what you can expect from Fruits Basket - an emotional and powerful story with amazing characters and life lessons. I know you'd love it, Flexie!!

It's a Google translation, so I'm sorry if it's weird.
