The pilots of the ITA A330 should’ve absolutely returned the plane back to JFK when they became aware of what had happened. Anything that can cause danger to the safety of passengers and crew, even if it’s unlikely to occur, should be dealt with right away. Also, it seems odd that there was such a slow response to this if the 330 was already in the air once they had gotten notified. I had something a little like this happen to me when I was at LAX going to LHR on a Virgin Atlantic A350 and the jet-bridge hit the engine when it was pulling away. Luckily the pilots actually got notified instead of them finding out as we were in the air 😂.

The first thing is to complement the Air France pilots for immediately reporting the incident as it was abundantly clear that they had safety paramount in their minds. The ITA plane should most definitely have returned to JFK for immediate inspection. Whilst the plane completed its journey safely, by ignoring ATCs information, they chose to take a risk which potentially could have endangered their passengers and their own lives. As for ATC, I understand that they need to fully understand the information given to them, I felt that they were far too slow to understand the clear message of the Air France pilot and should have immediately requested the ITA plane to hold whilst they ascertained the information. Since they are in control of the planes on the ground, I feel that the JFK ATC was grossly negligent.

There is *no* *way* the flight crew didn't feel something while they were taxiing... but I guess they could have thought it was a bump in the taxiway. Either way, with the aircraft only being on the ground for 2 days following the incident, it was probably only [minor] damage to the winglet, which is easily replaced. If the AF plane has been sat in JFK for 2 weeks, you'd have thought the damage to their tail was fairly extensive... That being said, a tail cone replacement is a quick fix too, as long as you have the part

An A330-200 is at the very least 120 tons, and it obviously was heavier since that is operating empty weight (so no fuel even), I doubt the ITA crew would feel much of anything with a winglet hit. The main lifting part of the wing sure, but I would bet the winglet (at least I would do it like this) is even weaker on purpose to be both lighter and not damage the wing in case it hits something. This does make me wonder how did the Air France crew even notice the issue, maybe cabin crew informed them?
@simu312 жыл бұрын
@@Kalvinjj Maybe. I wasn't on board so I can only speculate. I'm pretty sure the A330neo (and A350) winglets are made of carbon fiber, I can't remember if the A330ceo are made of the same stuff, but if they are made of carbon fiber, they're fairly solid. What I can say is, a heavy aircraft, including a fully loaded A330, you can feel every imperfection in the taxiway as it trundles along, so even if they did feel something, it could have been written off as another divot in the taxiway. I would also suggest, as the 777 is STILL at JFK two weeks later, the damage must be pretty bad, which would explain how the AF pilots would have felt the impact.
@simu312 жыл бұрын
@@Kalvinjj come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I've seen a video of an A330 wing tip (so the winglet) slice into another aircraft's fuselage without showing any major damage to it. I seem to have a vague memory of seeing that.
@Kalvinjj2 жыл бұрын
@@simu31 The Air France aircraft might have gotten hit on some important components, such that the maintenance to it wasn't trivial, maybe not big damage, but serious damage. Replacing just a winglet vs. some slats is one likely case, I would also like to know more, if anything else just to satiate this curiosity. Sure the winglet isn't weak by any means, but it really doesn't have high pressures on it like the main wing structure, as it doesn't produce lift (it does of course handle all the drag related to it at near the speed of sound, so definitely not paper), the wing tip it's attached to tho definitely has some strength to it, hit it closer to the base and the damage might be quite severe. I remember seeing it on a video being ripped pretty badly from another aicraft's wing (I think a 787 or what was it).
