Looks like the star you were seeing was Sirius, which is the brightest star in the sky. The reason it was blinking or pulsing in different colors is due to light of different wavelengths (or colors) being refracted in different ways through the turbulent layers of the atmosphere lower down. You can tell it is Sirius because you can see the constellation Orion up to the right from it, and the characteristic 3 stars in Orion’s Belt points roughly at Sirius.

I can still remember the early 1980's when several European airlines were flying to Japan across the North Pole and via Anchorage. Lufthansa's 747-200 were even equipped with special polar protection suits for the crew to put on in case of an emergency landing or ditching in that icey region. Today, that sounds pretty weird, but back in those days it was a more adventurous flight than it is today. But the unique views out of the aircraft's windows were the same spectacular ones like in this video. At this point the adventure still remains the same like 40 years ago.

I remember when I was a kid in the eighties, Finnair used the same polar route with DC-10-30ER, N345HC, to avoid costly Russian airspace tariffs and mandatory stop at Soviet Union which were required at that time. It was also the very first first true non-stop flight service between Europe and Japan and foundation of Finnair's success in Europe-Asia traffic for small country and airline. N345HC was supposed to enter at service as OH-LHC but ended for US company Wells Fargo and was long term leased. Lease also required that Finnair pilots had to have FAA licences instead of europeans. ER-option from McDonnell Douglas was extremely important for Finnair, but it also prevented Finnair to come one of few customers for Boeing 747SP which was also in the table as one of options at that time.

Truly enjoyed this trans-Arctic flightpath video. I was down below in 1971, talking to flights which were passing overhead at 74N. There were five weather stations along the route. We were the westernmost site, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea. There was no commercial satcom back then, so we all relied on HF radio. Well done on setting your camera properly to avoid the screens flickering! That is more difficult than many appreciate as LEDs are notoriously difficult to set shutter speed for. This obviously makes viewing far more of a pleasurable experience. As a Japan resident, whilst nothing in comparison to what the Ukrainians are going through, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has made flights back to Europe a real nuisance. Coupled with the flight experience of flying thanks to Covid-19, it has become more hassle than I wish to endure. At some point, I must return to Wales to see family that I haven't seen now for almost 10 years. Thankfully, Japan has this autumn finally relaxed regulations which has lightened the burden of travel stress greatly.

A small price to pay.. on the other hand I wouldn't want to fly over there in any case. If you have to emergency land there you wouldn't know if they allow you to fly again or are you kept as a bargain chip or whatever.

V enjoyable. You lucked out on the night time constellations, the full moon, a wee taste of the Northern lights and got to fly over the Pole - “there should be a long pole” - vert dry lol. Watching the pilots at work - consummate professionals. Your channel is way ahead of the competition - professional, elegant, no ego and, thankfully, no over-bearing soundtrack - just the natural sounds of aviation and some relaxing beats & narration in the background 👍. Really enjoyed the Greenland series too. Keep up the good work.

This is a great video - many years ago I remember an episode of Ice Pilots NWT where they did a job taking equipment to CFB Alert at pretty much the northernmost island of Canada in one of their Lockheed Electras and they actually had to navigate south because it was north of "magnetic north". This was one hell of a trip. This was even more epic. I would seriously consider doing this because how many people have flown over the Arctic ocean.

Great video! I flew from Seoul via Tokyo to Amsterdam with KLM in 1975 when I was a baby. Lol, my parents still have the receipts (€551 for a single flight). Later in my 20's I flew several times a year to Tokyo but always over Russia. I enjoyed these flights as you had a fantastic view over vast snow landscapes.

What a great video ! It takes us to a place of wander, how aviation has enabled us to make these journeys, which not so long ago, were virtually impossible. The polar communications (HF, ACARS, CPDLC) is such a great topic. HF remains a very trustworthy medium, and you covered on all the fun topics of this magical route... eg. Northern Lights, SELCAL, Navigation North South, etc. A magical video - and thank you very much again!!

If you were asking about the brightest celestial object visible at 20:46, this is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. At 20:50, you see a part of the Orion constellation. The three stars forming a line are Orion's belt and they point directly to Sirius. Variations in brightness and color are due to atmospheric turbulence, this effect is called "astronomical seeing".

Singapore Airways used to fly over the North Pole from SGN-EWR. I image with both Russian airspace closed and rising tensions with China, Singapore flies the great circle route through Alaska and Canada. This is a flight though I want to do someday in the near future. Fly over the North Pole. Thanks for show casing that Finn Air does this route! Great video.

European airlines still regularly fly through China, to get to Japan and beyond. Tensions rose recently was due to the pushing of "limits" on both sides. Only Russian Airspace is off limits, the SIN to EWR diversion to alaska is because of this. SGN is Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City btw.
