I love itachi but he’s definitely no hero. He killed so many innocent people, and yes I am fully aware he was very young and manipulated into doing so but he could never be labeled a hero for all the lives that have been lost due to his hand. Itachi is a morally gray character in its essence.

The Uchiha Clan Coup d'état had become imminent after shisui Uchiha incident. Killing Danzo who was second-in command would make it seem as though Uchiha Clan plotted to kill him and would lead to bloody civil war. If what Danzo did to Shisui becomes known, the Uchiha Clan would confirm their violent Coup d'état or their insurrection against Hidden Leaf. Shisui tells Itachi to protect the Leaf Village and Honor/Reputation of Uchiha Clan now that Uchiha Clan Coup d'état had become inevitable. Itachi tells his Clan members not to pursue their violent Coup d'état as they are literally falling into Danzo's trap. But it falls into Deaf ears. Once the Coup d'état becomes confirmed, Itachi is left with 2 Choices: 1) let a small yet powerful Clan as the Uchiha instigate full-scale bloody civil-war which would lead to enormous bloodshed to Leaf Village and annihilation of Uchiha Clan(including Sasuke and Itachi himself). This would lead to trigger of 4th Great Ninja War and would result in other shinobi nations invading an extremely vulnerable Leaf Village causing global bloodshed including demise of Leaf Village. The second choice is what Danzo and Konoha Council force Itachi to do without knowledge of Hiruzen Sarutobi(Third Hokage): Prevent the full-scale civil war and enormous bloodshed of Leaf Village and outbreak of 4th Great Ninja War causing global bloodshed and could also save Sasuke through this. But the cost is to massacre remaining members of his small yet influential Clan. Majority of Clan members are supporters of violent Coup d'état and thus their death is warranted but some Uchiha Clan members who are relatively innocent are also to be slaughtered. Itachi does not want to do it but knows the alternative is leagues worse. He accepts his fate and knows that he has no choice but to even kill those some innocent Uchiha Clan members in order to prevent the leagues worse Alternative as he is Selfless Heroic person deep down. Then the third Hokage unaware of Danzo's cruel plan to massacre the entire clan including few innocent Uchiha Clan members apologises to Itachi of his weakness as Third Hokage in dealing issues as serious as this with leadership. Itachi even takes the blame of all this and informs Hiruzen that he is going to infiltrate Akatsuki as a spy to protect the Village from inside and keep them away from Konoha which he did until his death. The fact that he had no choice and still saved countless lives across shinobi world and hidden leaf and prevented a global bloodshed does not make Itachi happy. In fact, he is still worried that he had to kill few innocent Uchiha Clan members in the process and faced intense grief and trauma. He stays Alive so that he could die at Sasuke's hands so that Sasuke could be hailed as the man who avenged the Uchiha Clan and Hero of Hidden Leaf. Without taking any credit of selfless heroism and suffering for the greater good, he wanted to die as a criminal and as a traitor. His character is quintessential example of selfless heroic character that he is to save countless lives but who had to kill some innocent Uchiha Clan members with no choice at his disposal at that time. Yet he still is haunted by it every single day. Yet there are members who still abuse him and call him a villain and and call him evil. It's sick how a person such as Selfless and Heroic as Itachi is being hated by some disgusting and wicked people.
