The crown Jewel and turning point in Itachi's life and I believe the whole series actually, is when his father had resolved and accepted the decision his son was about to make while admonishing him. While the "ACT" itself was heinous, the symbolism it represents is ever more poignant than ever. The Uchiha clan represented the "passions of the will" if it gets excess along with its full-on hypocrisy and contradiction. Itachi represented the honing of thee "passions" along with the full acceptance of this phenomenon and the bias it comes with. One always has to win out, all Danzo did was just speed up the process. Phenomenal writing and storytelling by Kishi.

I feel like Itachi being a good guy is one of the biggest plot twists in Naruto. The insanely feared way he was firstly introduced, a killer, a traitor, a psychopath. King Kylie i thought of a few points that may or may not make you think other wise 1. If he didn’t kill all of them, that would’ve created even worse things. The Uchiha knew the Leaf were not completely with them, so they would’ve assumed it was the Leaf, creating an all out war of Uchiha vs The Leaf. Sure, Itachi might have killed a few hundred Uchiha, but he probably saved thousands of people in the long run. It was needed to be done once Shisui died. 2. If that got out that Itachi did it not out of spite, but because the Leaf told him too. People in the leaf would panic because who knows if they might get killed next, and then probably people would revolt because they killed people from their village to over throw the higher ups in the leaf. 3. Itachi was completely against killing his clan. He thought of a few ways, none of them would work except Shisui casting Kotoamatsukami against the entire clan. That was the plan, and then all of a sudden Shisui is dead. Itachi probably thought if he kept refusing that plan, he himself would die. But he couldn’t die a noble death because if he died it wouldn’t have mattered. They would’ve just found another person to kill the clan so that would’ve done nothing.

Kisame was a bad guy. There's no way around that. Yet, I feel like he redeemed himself somehow. Maybe because Kisame isn't so different from other ninja. @DistantFlow Sasuke did kill Itachi. Don't get stuck on technicalities. It made Sasuke's rage bigger, he killed for a reason which could have been avoided had the village just played nicely. This proofs that power is indeed everything and those with power controls who lives and who dies. The hidden leaf village will forever be the eternal paradox, Madara was right in alot of ways but we learn quickly that his own distrust caused the uchiha downfall. Sasuke and Itachi were just in the middle of it all, with no way to control or save anyone. Not even themselves.

He knew he would not live long and will soon die and so it was better to give Sasuke the credit of killing him , so that the village would acknowledge him. And even The Name of Uchiha clan would survive. Itachi died because he was ill and he overused his powers. Even in the last moments he was not attacked by Sasuke.(As he wasn't capable of doing that as he was fully exhausted) And even Itachi had to free him with curse mark of Orochimaru .
