He also mentioned apples and cheese, which are sometimes combined in apple pie here in the US. I've even had and apple, cheddar and jalapeno pie. Aside from that, I've seen fruit and cheese served together as part of a multi-course meal in France. I've seen fruit and cheese paired as part of a fondue in Switzerland. I could keep going, but the point is, fruit and cheese are paired together all the time. Not sure why pineapple and cheese would be different. Oh, also, Philadelphia makes a pineapple and cream cheese spread that goes on bagels. And it's pretty tasty.

I agree- just because some food has its origin in another country doesn't mean that if another country takes it and modifies it to their taste that is somehow isn't good. Sure you can say it is not real Italian style pizza but I don't know anybody was ever making that claim to begin with.

Gotta remember the heritage of pizza in the US is from Italians and it's developed culturally within the states. We had a lot of Italian immigrants here in West Virginia and that's how we got the pepperoni roll as our state food. It was developed by an Italian for miners to easily carry their lunch into the mines. We have our local chain "The Pizza Place" that's been here for decades that was started and still own by Italian immigrants to WV. Greasy it may be but it's hands down the best in town with thick and thin crust. Lot's of German, Irish and Italian heritage in WV.
@danu_emrys5 ай бұрын
Where I used to get deep dish the crust around the edge was not so wide and the fillings weren't sunken into the center, it was flat across the top. They also served it in the cast iron skillet that they had baked it in, they wore oven mitts and placed a cork board under it to protect the table when they delivered it and made sure to warn you every time that it was hot.

I always give Italians a hard time cause of how prideful they seem to be, especially when it comes to judging their Italian American relatives! Our families were forced to migrate here due to war and famine, and they used anything they could to make something that reminded them of home. Sure, deep dish isn’t “traditional”, but it was invented out of necessity and nostalgia. Italy’s beautiful and we’ll always know they invented so much of what we’ve recreated, but it doesn’t make our version of”lesser”.

The actual Hawaiian Pizzas tend to be something of an abomination...but pineapple on pizza can be rather good. Unfortunately, to me, most pizza places have a sauce that's to sweet for pineapple My favorite is a honey bbq sauce with pineapple, bacon, jalapeno, and red onion (sometimes with chicken as well...and a few times, when places have it, pulled pork).

About that Pompeii "Pizza": (quoted from AP News) "… They noted that key ingredients needed to make Italy's iconic dish - tomatoes and mozzarella - were not available when the fresco was painted some 2,000 years ago. Tomatoes were only introduced to Europe from the Americas a few centuries ago, and some histories have it that the discovery of mozzarella led directly to the invention of pizza in nearby Naples in the 1700s. The image is instead believed to be a focaccia covered with fruit, including pomegranate and possibly dates, finished with spices or a type of pesto, experts said. In the fresco, it is served on a silver plate and a wine chalice stands next to it." You're welcome, Mr. Z, you can rest easy
