4:07 - "Boom!" "ok." I've seen these types of firecrackers once or twice & wondered what they are. Now that I've had the pleasure of seeing them made lovingly by hand, I understand. Damn that's a lot of work to be over so quickly! I'm sure I'd enjoy making them, though! Lighting them, too, of course! Wow! I think I'll join PGI so I can make stuff like this.

why dont people who make fireworks just use masking tape??

tape will not store well or last in a humid environment, string gives a secure mechanical connection that will not fail when done with care and attention. Part of fireworks is learning the traditional methods and techniques used in the past, and what makes for a workmanlike finish. You take pride in your work and eschew shortcuts like tape and stick to paper, string and paste. An old fireworker once told me they could judge a shell and the 'mechanic' who made it by just looking at the leader, the quality of the match used.
