Today we don t need legionaries or stuff like these,(rome had also a republican period and other politics ,it s a long story-) the imperialism era is done, it's useless even a powerful army, the world is changed drastically, but if we have to consider armies today, I d say italy is a first world country with a good millitary, well equiped and trained soldiers, but we don t have nukes because our republic has forbidden nuclear weapons.

The Monna Lisa was gifted to the king of France by Leonardo Da Vinci himself (he was living by his court working for him at the time). It's a french piece of art more than it is italian. Italy had chances to get it but never even tried for this reason.

He died in France, leaving what he had with him to his patron. For the same reason after Napoleon was defeated in 1815 a delegation of italian art experts led by the famous sculptor Antonio Canova and escorted by prussian soldiers headed to Paris in order to individuate and retrieve the italian works of art stolen by Napoleon and bring them back to their original context: the Monna Lisa, as immensely famous as it is, was left where it was and can still be seen today. There is no doubt the Monna Lisa is one of the most emblematic pieces of italian art, but it belongs where Da Vinci left it. I'm italian myself as I suspect you are, and I'm perfectly fine with it being at the Louvre as long as it is correctly maintained and exposed. Edit: after checking I saw the picture was not given directly to the king by Da Vinci but bought by the latter after the former died. Still, being part of da Vinci's set of works in the moment he was serving under king Francis I, it's fair to admit that France makes the most sense as a place for it to be kept.
