Well, actually, as an Italian native speaker, I should let you know that 'È una bella gatta da pelare' ( 'I have a cat to skin' - or more correct 'I have a cat to shave') isn't used to say 'I have things to do', but is an idiom close to the English 'It's a tough nut to crack'. We use it to point out that a thing, action, or situation is quite hard to accomplish, or that we're dealing with a problem that is difficult to solve. Sometimes we use it in reference to people with challenging and decisive personalities, with whom it is not always easy to deal or difficult to understand. I realize it sounds weird, but try skinning a cat: it will scratch your eyes out first LOL

Frying certain fish is healthy and can provide nutrients. Whipping cats is essentially torturing them, as its dealing damage to them while they're still alive. There's no reason to do this. Skinning something is a long, bloody and somewhat difficult process. Depending on the animal, feet, claws and tails are removed before the skinning process. Sometimes this _is_ done while the animal is alive, making this an outright monstrous thing to thing. While skinning can be done to prepare the meat for cooking, it can also be used for clothing or decoration, which is much more gruesome and unnecessary.

If you literally translate the frase from today’s Italian than yes it means to skin, but probably in the original dialect it means just to shave, so it refers to the fact that usually cats are not happy to have their fur removed and they will fight back so the task is not simple.

In American English we don't say we have other cats to skin, but we do say "there's more than one way to skin a cat" when we mean a problem can be solved in more than one way. The "cat" in this case is actually a catfish though; they have skin, not scales. And there really are several ways you can fillet them. So it's less horrifying than it seems. Italian here! Fun fact: the actual verb we use in this expression is "pelare", which is usually referred to vegetables like potatoes and carrots. I think a more accurate verb to say "skin a cat" would be "scuoiare", but thank god we don't say it in this situation😂.
