Wow. Valentina is so easy to follow and understand. My dad was Irish American and mom was born in Caserta, Naples Italy. Came to USA when 17 in 1939. She never taught us kids, but would always speak Italian on phone calls to relatives. Anyway, here is a chance to speak a little of mom's mother tongue to respect her heritage and the cultural gifts she gave to us. We love you and miss you, Angelina Migliozzi. Great work, Valentina. Thank you.

Linguini followed by Ravioli then Gemelli followed by Orzo. By the Swiss Italian Border Region more near the German Language speaking area we have Maultaschen. A fresh pasta dough rolled out about twice the size or more of a Ravioli and stuffed with ground meat and or finely chopped vegetables and simmered in a broth. It is more of a hearty soup main dish. Maultaschen as a concept meal extends through Austria and southern Germany.

How do you feel about the American mispronunciation of 'risotto', 'gnicchi' etc sweeping the world? They pronounce any Romance language word with an 'o' within the word incorrectly. For instance, 'risotto' is said as if it's 'rizowtow' - the 'o' as it's pronounced in 'row' or 'toe'. This elongation and Americanisation of words drives me crazy! The American domination of media, especially on the internet, is resulting in young people learning to mispronounce languages without even realising it. America seems to seek to influence and dominate the world in everything but now they're successfully infiltrating the language and culture of Europe and South America. Thank goodness for people like you. Well done and keep up the good work!
@ItalianTeacherValentina2 жыл бұрын
Ciao Mag, thanks for your comment and appreciation! The mispronunciation of the "o" that you point out is definitely true, that's something I explain to all my students right away as it can have an huge impact even in the meaning of words (think of "poi" vs "puoi", as an example). It's great that you have noticed it on your own, you must have a great ear! I don't find it extremely upsetting just because I've noticed these two facts from my experience as an Italian and as a teacher: 1. As an Italian, I have to unfortunately admit we have a huge responsibility in this "Americanization" of our language. We have always incorporeted a lot of foreign words (esp. from English) but in the last few years this is - in my opinion - getting out of control. Not only we incorporate a lot of Eglish words (esp. from technology) but a sad trend I witness every day, esp. in social media and also on tv and magazines, is that Italians nowadays use English even when we do have words and expressions in Italian. Most Italians feel this makes them more cool. I do sometimes fear we are losing our language and we are not appreciating its beauty enough. The reasons in my opinion are really complex, and have a lot to do with Italian history (e.g. being dominated for so many centuries) and of course the role of Italy and technology in today's world. Please let me know if you'd find a video on this topic interesting. 2. As a teacher, and teaching a lot of people from the US, I can tell you that - at least for people who are learning the language - as soon as you correct them, they are really willing not to make the mistake anymore and start correcting other people too! :D You have no idea how many of my students correct waiters on the pronunciation of bruschetta and similar (btw, I hope you didn't miss my video on that, I think you may like it!). And the same students are the most disappointed ones when I have to tell them that, for a specific word, we use the Eglish and don't have an Italian version. Maybe this is just how things go in human history, languages and cultures do change, but I'll try to do my best to share the beauty of my language and country with all people who want to know about it and appreciate and love it so much. YOU are the ones who will keep the Italian language alive in my opinion! :)

I love art, so for me it is important to pronounce the names of artists/ paintors/architects or other important names mentioned in history books, etc. correctly. Also the names of famous buildings/archeological structures. Because religion plays a big role in italian culture and there are more churches than hospitals in Italy (at least that's what it seemed to me) , I think people's names are also important to pronounce correctly.
@ItalianTeacherValentina Жыл бұрын
Ahah I never thought about the churches from that perspective but yes, I can confirm we do have way more churches than hospitals (not that we lack hospitals, but we do have a ton of churches 😄😄)

This whole business of pronouncing foreign words correctly is a bogus issue for psycho-social linguists, which stems from linguistic naivete of amateurs. It's impossible and unwarranted to demand that native speakers pronounce foreign words like natives of other languages instead of uttering them in a way that is established in their own language. Pronouncing Italian or Spanish names/words like native Italians or Mexicans do is not only impossible for most people but it sounds affected and even ludicrous if done consistently because it is deviating from the sound structure of the native speaker's tongue. The happy medium, for example, is to anglicize foreign words in accordance with the sound structure of English but still try to be close to the original pronunciation. Thus some rube pronouncing spaghetti as spay-GHETTI would be unacceptable but the way this word is pronounced in the English-speaking world by almost everybody is perfectly OK. The irony of these demands for "correct" pronunciation is that such individuals don't make similar requests for foreigners to pronounce English words/names exactly the way Americans or British people do. By that token, shouldn't Germans say LUNN-duhn instead lawn-DAWN, and shouldn't the French say Oesterreich instead of L'Autriche?
