His character is an adoptee, raised in Italy, so he is culturally Italian, ethnically Korean. So he gets frustrated with the cultural differences. Very relatable for Korean adoptees and a lot of other gyopos probably. Like we aren't considered Korean by Koreans, we're foreigners despite being born here and at one point having citizenship here. We're often expected to understand the culture though, unlike other foreigners who are not of Korean descent. It's weird and complicated. I'm enjoying the show as I was raised Italian-American and now am living in Seoul, so there are lots of little things that are relatable.

I'm not surprised he cannot roll the 'r' sound well. The Korean language technically does not have an 'r' letter. It has the letter ㄹ which can be spoken as an 'l' or an 'r' depending on where the letter ends up in the word and even then it has a very different sound to the Italian 'r'.
@Melinioum3 жыл бұрын
They have the 'r' letter (ㄹ) but they just use it on words differently, I know that because I'm learning Korea and the letter that they don't have is the 'L' so my Korean teacher when she wanted to write my name she use it 2 ㄹ just to make the 'L' letter. 😁👍👍
@mariaellul22303 жыл бұрын
@@Melinioum The consonant ㄹ is technically not an r. It does not have the typical 'r' sound and definitely not an Italian 'r'. I have been studying Korean for two years and am fluent in Italian. I have been speaking Italian since I was a child. The 'r' sound of the consonant ㄹ only comes out when it is in between two vowels, hence why your teacher had to double the ㄹ consonant so that your name can be read properly in the ㄹ format. The ㄹ practically always has an 'l' sound anywhere else in the sentence. Take for example the word 하늘. When in a sentence it becomes 하늘에, it takes a very soft 'r' sound that is quite unlike English 'r' and extremely different to the Italian 'r'. Or for example words like 라디오, it may be borrowed from English but the word radio is still spoken with an 'l' not an 'r'. This consonant is neither a blanket l or r, and you should not assume it to be as either or. The sounds are similar but not exactly an r or l.
@mabelfernandez96033 жыл бұрын
Then what about ramen (noodles) pronounced lamen and Harabuji (grand father) pronounced as it is. Seems they can't pronounce the 'r' at the beginning of a word but can when it is in a word.
@mariaellul22303 жыл бұрын
@@mabelfernandez9603 The ㄹ in 할아버지 is between two vowels so it is spoken as an 'r' but as I pointed out, quite different then an Italian r. When the ㄹ is anywhere else, meaning either in the beginning or start of the word, or doubled up it is spoken as an 'l'. Examples such as: 라면, 술, 하늘 etc. This is why I said you cannot say that ㄹ is an 'r' because its sound is very limited. It is also not a traditional 'l' sound, it is usually much softer. The consonant ㄹ in itself is a little complicated until you get the hang of its sound depending on its place but it gets easier 😊

As a language teacher, I will say that, in general, if your native language is from a different language family than the one you're learning, sometimes sounds that don't exist in your native language (like the rolled R) are really hard to learn. Since Korean is so far from Italian, and he learned as an adult (and pretty quickly), it was probably hard for him. I don't speak Italian, but a friend of mine is a native speaker. She was pretty impressed, just like you two were. It was so nice to hear you say, "If I were to speak Korean..." And heck! Even languages from the same language families have difficult sounds. I am a native English speaker who speaks German. The "ä, ö," and "ü" sounds are still sometimes tough for me to make after almost 25 years! And my German students really struggle with the "th" sound. I give Song Joon-Ki a lot of credit for taking this role on.

Yes! I agree! I’m a native Spanish speaker and I’ve been learning French for the past two years and believe, there are sounds that I still struggle to pronounce, because they don’t exist in Spanish, but that are extremely important for the correct understanding of the French language.

I am half Italian and half Filipino, the actor (I don't know him) speaks Italian like my Mom - same accent! And she's been living in Italy for more than 30 years. Well done - they way he pronounces some words makes him sound from Sardinia - especially when he tries hard to pronounce our double letters. Foreigners have the tendency to emphasise the accent towards the final syllables of Italian words. Overall, not bad.

Decisamente, i tempi di produzione in Asia sono molto più stretti - considera che producono serie e film uno dopo l’altro decine di volte all’anno. First you guys sre watchings just the bits without the context. When he says Korea di merda “ Fucking Korea” he says that because he just landed in Korea and he was robbed. So it makes sense. Than, his pronunciation is slow because he is not a native so is normal for him to slow down and try to say things properly. Also, when the italian guy said that all Italian speak with a lot of gestures, i think Vincenzo here gives more a profound depiction of his character being a Mafia man so he speaks slow and grounded. So, not all Italians speak so actively especially if you have a certain position and character. Overall i loved his acting in Italian. Gave him a sense of the character.

There are lots of "r" in Italian words and to think that JoongKi rolled the "r" perfectly on these words are so amazing

It's not that they confused the L and R .. it's because they don't have a definite L or R as in English R or L .they have a letter that corresponds to either L or R ,but they don't pronounce it as R or L. It sounds like "AL" or "HAL" it's like they combined L and R .

Honestly I don’t care if he got every word or pronunciation correctly. I admire him for his efforts in picking up Italian in such a short period of time, let alone memorizing the lines and acting them out. He surely had an accent - he is supposed to have an accent as he had never learned Italian before. I’d be surprised if he didn’t have one. Thanks for this entertaining video without going too harsh on Joong Ki :D

I'm Korean. Koreans love Italy and Italians as well. Thanks for enjoying the K I drama. Korean-Italian drama.

I really like the video. My husband also asked me, how his Italian was, and I totally agree with you. (I'm not native either but I studied it at school and my grand-grandfather was Italian)

For korean people is really very difficult to pronounce “R” or “V” like we do, because in korean language they do not have this nouns. They say “L” instead of “R” and “P” instead of “V”. So to say even a doubled R is close to impossible 😅 not only pronounciation but also the melody of speech is so different! I was so excited and curious with this movie because I couldnt imagine how he would speak Italian. Jong did such an amazing job!

Song Joon g ki you've done a very good job speaking Italian. The low , calm voice seems to be very emblematic of the consigliere in Italian mafia movies. Well done. I wonder, did you actually go to Malta too?
