One of the problems with the spellcasting interface is if you hover over the CHA save or DEX save to see what's contributing to that, it shows you the modifiers that caster would have if they were resisting their own spell. For example, the Dex Save tool tip on ice knife, or sacred flame will show you what that Wizard or Cleric will have to resist their own spell, rather than what a enemy target would be resisting. This means if you look at different spells which target different ability scores from the same class, you'll see different DCs for each of them The spell book numbers are correct, just don't get confused when you hover over the spell save tool tips in the spells.

I posted a question about this on reddit about 10 hours before this was uploaded, so I was a) hoping to find the answer and b) feeling a little targeted... The multiclass confusion comes in with items and ATTACK ROLLS. According to the BG3 wiki, when you cast a spell from a scroll, it will use your latest taken NEW class for the spell DC, so Sorc>Wiz>Sorc will use Int, and Sorc>Wiz>Dru>Wiz>Sorc will use Wis. Casting from scrolls isn't really a huge issue for 95% of builds but the way it's apparently implemented is confusing, to say the least. The Attack Roll is what I asked about last night, because I started a Gale Honour run and things suddenly went to crap at level 3 when I multiclassed into Sorc. Aside from the obvious Metamagic, I took Sorc for utility spells that always needed to be prepared, like Shield, so there's nothing offensive in the Sorc spell book except for what Shovel has doodled in the margins. My understanding was that the Attack Roll was based on the Class that knows the spell. It's a pretty standard explanation that Shadowheart's infamous Igmiss comes from her being a Half-Elf which uses Int, and it makes a lot of sense. If you pick Searing Ray on your Sorc, the spell will always use Cha; if you pick it on your Wiz, Searing Ray will always use Int. It makes sense, and this is what's shown in the pop-up... until you get to the second pop-up. Last night, I learned Searing Ray from a scroll. When hovering over the spell, it lists Int for the DC and Int as the spellcasting ability. When hovering over the Attack Roll, however, it lists Cha for the Attack Roll. ALL OF MY WIZARD SPELLS NOW USE CHA FOR THEIR ATTACK ROLL, and I can't hit the broadside of a barn hosting an ogre orgy. Instead of the base +5 bonus I get from Int, I'm only getting the +2 bonus from Cha. Gale suddenly feels like Shadowheart. I'm still a bit away from lvl 4 to see how/if it changes again but right now I'm screwed. I should add that the only reason I noticed this was because I was trying to figure out why I was suddenly not hitting anything. I've multiclassed like this plenty of times, throwing a level of Wiz onto a Bard, for example, and this is the first time I've noticed a sudden dip in performance from spells that were previously hitting just fine, so it could be a bug introduced in Patch 5 but people have been confused about this stuff for a while. You can see this in the video at 8:31. Bone Chill in a Sorc spell book using Int for the Attack Roll, on a character that you said last took a level in Wizard (or was that later?). [Also, your videos are still starting mid-word]

@italianspartacus, I usually like your videos because you have a really nice presentation and are great to listen to. I really hope you remake this one though because it has so much incorrect information. - Casting stat for scrolls and items 100% does change when you multiclass to your newest class - Advantage/disadvantage is not +2/-2, it is roll two dice and use the highest/lowest result - Casting does not use your highest stat, it uses the stat you got the spell from. There is also a bug where if you take a spell as a spontaneous caster like sorcerer, it will not even show up in your prepared caster slot. For example I just tested with 8CHA, 12WIS, 16INT. I leveled as Wizard, Sorcerer, Druid. I took Ice knife and Chromatic Orb as sorcerer. Ice knife no longer appears in the wizard list or druid list and chromatic orb does not appear in the wizard list. Both spells cast using CHA despite that being my lowest stat. - If you take a cantrip from two different casting classes it also does not use your highest stat, you get an option when casting to choose.
@kevinbarnard355
@kevinbarnard355 10 ай бұрын
He never said advantage gives you +2. He said having high ground or the enemy having high ground gives a +2 or -2 to your attack roll. I wouldn't say it's a bug that you can't choose those spells if you already have them known from a different class. The game warns you in the level up screen that you already know that spell. However, it does mistakenly tell you that you'll have access to both when it involves spells from spontaneous casting classes like Sorcerer. It works fine if you multiclass from different prepared casters. If you use the spell swapping option at level up to remove a spell known from bard, etc, then your wizard/cleric will be able to prepare that spell now if it's on their list as well. However, you do get to chose which ability you attack with if the spell is prepared or a cantrip on 2 different lists.

@kevinbarnard355

There is an issue when talking about spell casting modifiers and multiclassing spell casters. A spontaneous caster's known spells overrides and removes the option of other casters from having access to that spell. If a sorcerer knows Ice Bolt, they can't prepare it as a Druid or Wizard, and it will always use CHA, even if that's the lowest stat. If you are dealing with 2 prepared casters like Druid and Wizard, you can prepare it in both classes, and the game will let you select which stat you will use to cast it from (WIS or INT in this case). This likely extends to any "Always prepared" spells from subclass features. Racial spells and cantrips are separate and will always use the ability modifier that the feature says. That means a meph tiefling Druid can cast flame blade with their charisma once per long rest, and once per level 2 spell slot with their Wisdom. There are some times where multiclassing confuses the game. I just tested a Druid MC into Wizard and it forced him to use INT to attack with flame blade, even though it's not available to the Wizard class. As others have suggested, it's likely related to which class you started more recently.

Couple of clarifications here, since the system is super confusing I've spent a lot of time researching the mechanics in depth: 1) There are two types of spells, ones that make Spell Attack Rolls and ones that force the enemy to make a saving throw against your Spell Save DC. They are technically not the same thing (AC is not considered a saving throw), but functionally they are pretty similar as they scale off the same ability modifier. 2) Magic Missile and Cloud of Daggers are bad examples for explaining these mechanics, as they are actually exceptions that have a 100% chance to hit, and therefore don't trigger an attack roll or a saving throw. 3) When you multiclass, your spellcasting modifier for scrolls/items is actually the LAST unique spellcaster class you multiclassed into, not the first one - I've personally tested this as of patch 4. This means that its possible for your hit chance with scrolls to get worse when you level up if you dip into a spellcasting class with a lower modifier. Very annoying, hope Larian patches this to always pick the highest one instead 4) Beware of tooltips in your spellbook/inventory, the calculations for spell save DC and ability modifiers for those can sometimes not match what happens in combat, especially when multiclassing. Even the hit% shown when hovering a spell can sometimes be wrong. The only source of truth is the combat log after you have cast a spell :(

Yeah, the wrong modifier being displayed along with the wrong % is very ennoying. But let's say I start as a Cleric and have command in my prepared spells, and then go 4 bard. The Command spell is gonna use the cleric modifier (WIS) since is one of my cleric spells, right?

Did this change? I just respecced as Lvl 1 Storm Sorc, Lvl 2 Tempest Cleric, Lvl 3 Wizard, Lvl 4 Cleric, Lvls 5-12 Sorc. Most of my damage spells are coming from Wizard, so I have 20 INT. However, Markoheshkir using Bolts of Doom casts Chain Lightning and Lightning Bolt using one of the lower attack roll modifiers - I'm assuming Charisma. But according to how I understood, it should be using INT because Wizard was the last unique spellcaster.

Yeah, I hope a later update improves explanations in general and makes descriptions less mystical for many things, or have an option to enable it. When it comes to damage, not only magical but weapons as well, a real consistent output table and detailed combat log with all conditional terms (the basic implementation is already in the game) and why a passive isn't or is applied would be nice. I think it has too many performance hits to track this continually as it's implemented right now or something because it can't be difficult to deliver a detailed output. The differences in game difficulty level and so make this harder as well.

I ran into this problem too, multiclassing my lore bard with a cleric. I used withers to respec, but this time, I chose *bard* for level one instead of *cleric* for level one, and it totally fixed the problem. My spells hit alot more consistently after that.

Scrolls use the casting stat of your most recently taken new class. Martials are weird. Monks use WIS, Barbarian uses CHA, Fighter uses nothing and doesnt change it unless you take 3 fighter and pick Eldritch Knight then it is INT, Rogue is like Fighter where it is nothing unless you pick Eldritch Trickster and then it is INT. Rogue has an exception where if you start at level 1 rogue then it will be INT until you change it with another class. Basically a straight fighter should never use scrolls that have damage or saves, but everyone else can with varying success depending on your stats.

But I'm also really happy to know that class order when multiclassing isn't actually a thing. Just based off how you want to play and holds no bearing on spell effectiveness. Before now i was thinking id need to respec cuz i didn't start in the right class. NOW I'm just wondering if i should go full wizard or if i want to throw sorcerer into the mix, how much would i want to take? Or would it be better to go tempest cleric? Leaning toward red dragonic sorc for the buff to fire spells or maybe instead a ice dragon for those buffs since i like both those lines of elemental spells. Full wizard also looks good tho

There is something off about the spellcasting mechanics and I'm not sure if it is a bug that just affects me. In the DC for each spell is not the same when hover over it compared to the DC shown at the top of the spellbook. The spell bonus is adding on from the its respective saving throw class. For instance, Both Gale and Astarion at lvl4 have the spell grease. But the DC for astarion's grease is higher at 13 vs gale at 10 because Astarion dexterity is higher at 14 vs gale at 10. This does not make any sense whatsoever

The casting stat doesnt affect the damage unless the spell says to add your spell casting modifier to the damage. Think of your spell casting modifier as your accuracy. A 20 INT wizard will hit more often with a fireball than a 16 CHA Draconic Fire Sorcerer, but the Draconic Fire Sorcerer will do more damage when it does hit. A 20CHA Sorcerer and 20INT Wizard will have the same accuracy though.

Sneak attack scales with Rogue levels and you need a Finesse Weapon for it - it uses STR or DEX depending on which stat is higher. 1) If you're using a bound weapon, it uses CHA for the damage instead of DEX or STR. 2) if your bound weapon is NOT a Finesse Weapon, you get the CHA bonus, but CANNOT use Sneak Attack.

The way the spellcasting ability modfifier is chosen is pretty awful for sorcerer multiclasses, been running a storm sorcerer with a tempest cleric dip and discovered I have to sacrifice consitution save proficiency and conversational skills on my party face sorc so items and continuous spells like call lightning don't break

So that means that if an EK has spells that aren't shared with my sorcerer spells, they will still use int instead of charisma?

I’m sorry, I’m just having a hard time understanding. So if I go 11 sorcerer with 20 CHA and 1 wizard with 12 INT. I did not take chain lighting with my sorcerer but learned it with a scroll from wizard. The chain lightning will strictly go off my int spell DC?

I had heard that item spell save modifiers were taken from your most recently taken caster class, not your first? So, if you wanted CHA to give you your modifiers with items, you should take a class that casts using CHA last? If this is wrong, great. Just asking for clarification.

Your first class
@OakandIV
@OakandIV 11 ай бұрын
@@italianspartacus so I just tested this with a scroll of burning hands. The caster’s first class was Cleric. His second Sorcerer. His third Wizard. The save was made vs INT. So, I might be missing something, but it looks like spells cast from item get saved against using your last caster class taken, not your first.
@kentoshin
@kentoshin 11 ай бұрын
Its definitely the last unique class, not the first class. I've tested this personally as of patch 4, its possible for your spell save DC for items to go down if you take a multiclass into a casting class with a lower modifier
@common_undead
@common_undead 11 ай бұрын
@@kentoshin ^^ This is precisely correct. Items and scrolls use the spell save dc and attack roll of the last unique class you multiclassed into. So if for example you're building a 10 storm sorc/2 tempest domain cleric build and you take sorcerer level 1 and then cleric at any point later, spells from markoheshkir will use wisdom for the attack roll and save dc.
@andybodle7560
@andybodle7560 11 ай бұрын
Clarification: last caster class you *took a level in*, or last caster class you multiclassed into? Say you start as sorcerer, then go cleric, but add more sorcerer levels later. Will items use CHA or WIS now?
@mletto157
@mletto157 8 ай бұрын
How does this work with spells granted from items? Like when you use Markoheshkir with Bolts of Doom you get Lightning Bolt & Chain Lightning. I'm currently playing as a multi-class Storm Sorc/Tempest Cleric/Wizard. Most of my levels are Sorc to get more sorc points, but most of my spells are cast as Wizard using INT modifier. Except for some reason it looks like the lightning spells from Bolts of Doom are using CHA as the modifier, even though it is quite a bit lower than my INT. I would like it to use my INT. Any ideas?

Thanks for shareing this party setup with us! Very interesting compilation. But... Something is slightly obscured here... I believe we do still miss an answer, why the hair was fallen off and finally missed in the early twenties... don't we?! 🙂 As a main bard, let me tell u a little story... Actually beating honour mode with my "Gun-Bard" main. That is a DEX-based Bow-Bard via College of Swords. Mainly attacks done by slashing flourish (bow). At Bard3 I already gained double attacks on 1 target! Bard5 to 6 got me an additional attack and short rest refreshes, what keept my mind always cool and calm. On Bard8 i felt done and did go over to fighter2 to get my heartbeat counted by "Action Surge". After that, i figured out that the spell sparkling stuff from wizard could be very funny, so that I learned a Haste-scroll. In the End I felt that i could do some more very useful "Command's" so that I picked Warlock1, because I am still the leader of the pack. For my "perfect suggestions" and and a very smooth click-friendly run, i did run as Dark Urge to have some conversation exitements paired with a few butcher-feelings. That early Dark Urge stealthy cloak, made by finesponed silk... very handy. After i rescued the Zentharim by killing the Wargs.. i am lost... or did i have sneaky watched the slaughtery and killed the survivors... can't remember really well. Bloody hell! Anyway, I really needed the strongest Bow (by calculation) in the game: the ultimate "Titanstring Bow" from Brem in the Hideout down below the Waukeen's Rest, after that quest with the - hopefully still closed - chest. Then i could drink a few early STR potions from Auntie Ethel inside the Druid Grove and pew pew the enemies without sharpshooter, while alerted since lvl4. always at first sight. That felt really exalted, like I have to be, right?! After I sneaked the way trough the Goblin Camp, passed the Selune Outpost, grabbed some Sussur Flowers behind the Myconid Village, and made the way on top into the Arcane Tower deep down below in the Underdark, i finally broke off the Club of Hillgiant Strength from the pouffe, because i already was potioned. While my ability and skill setup is max DEX and STR (by Club) now, i handled high Constitution and Wisdom to have high saving throws at all and already at lvl6 my Main - Conversation - Stealth - Lockpicker - DPS - Controlspell - Hasted - Longstriderd - Heavybearer - Bard feels great just with a simple potion of Bloodlust for heavy fights. As a Githyanki by nature, with a B-Penis (who could play the Ukulele, but sadly had to choose the violin), I am already a Stranger out here in Baldur's Gate, so nobody would wonder, that I used my hellish cheeky skills, to close the gab in Intelligence by using my astral Knowledge, to be convenient in nature as needed, thou. Honestly moded, i was extraordinary free and had no restrictions, what the other band members whould be... Can you believe?!

So if I want to make OP sorceror who knows all spells… I should make 11 sorcerer 1 wizard and have high intelligence and low charisma? I can take the tech spells as sorcerer and damage spells as wizard (from scrolls)? Meta magic with high rolls on int?
@shadowfurydono
@shadowfurydono 11 ай бұрын
Or low int high charisma with tech spells from wizard and damage spells from sorc? Which is better?
@ItzGenesis
@ItzGenesis 11 ай бұрын
It depends from where you got the spells you are gonna do damage/make the enemies make saving throws with. For example: if i learn ray of frost with a sorcerer level up, the damage and likelyhood it would hit the enemy are both based on charisma, because i got that skill from sorcerer and sorcerer is charisma based. Or if you lets say, learned ray of frost with the wizard level up or thru scrolls (which wizards can do), that damage and hit chance will scale with int. So on a 11sorc 1wizard build, you usually just want wizard for some utility spells, spells that dont require an attack to hit or the enemy to do a saving throw, since the majority of your damage and control spells are gonna come from sorcerer, its better you focus on charisma.

How does Str & Dex affect damage and other aspects?
@xavierdoesntmatter
@xavierdoesntmatter 11 ай бұрын
Str and Dex don't affect really anything about spells, including damage. There are certain spells that use those stats for saving throws though. Like dex is normally the stat that affects spells with area of effects because you're dodging the spell.
@Biggiesmallz33
@Biggiesmallz33 11 ай бұрын
Ok thanks.. What about the affects on martial weapons?
@xavierdoesntmatter
@xavierdoesntmatter 11 ай бұрын
@@Biggiesmallz33 That could be a 5-10 minute video because there is a few potential things that deviate from the norms. In general str gives a bonus to hit with martial and a bonus to damage. In general dex gives a bonus to hit and damage with ranged weapons like bows/crossbows In general str gives a bonus to hit and damage with throwing weapons like axes There are times these rules can be broken like if you have a finesse style weapon (rapiers and daggers usually) which will use your dex IF it's higher than str otherwise uses strength. This is great for dex heavy rogues/rangers. Warlocks with pact of blade get to throw out strength and dex when it comes to melee weapons because binding the weapon makes it use cha instead. I think monks sometimes have a way to use wis instead of str but I don't normally play monks so don't quote me on that.
@xavierdoesntmatter
@xavierdoesntmatter 11 ай бұрын
@@Biggiesmallz33 Also something to note is that I'm pretty sure this version does the 1.5 times strength bonus when using a 2 handed weapon or a versitile weapon but nothing in off hand. In that case if you have a +4 from strength you could get +6 instead.
