Hey ITalk. Thanks for tackling one of the most misunderstood situations in baseball. But you missed the most critical factor that dictates salary calculations for Arb 4-6 and it's pre Arb 3, the last year of minimum salary. A MLB player's performance in year 3 determines year 4 to 6. Year 3 prodictivity is so crucial because year 5 & 6 is a multipliar of year 4 which solely based on year 3. Agents & GMs know this and almost everyone outside has no idea. Now you know.
@nathanreynolds64593 күн бұрын
^^ This. I like ITalk's videos but he needs to understand both sides of the story before instantly siding with the player.
@brianchu33173 күн бұрын
I learned something. Also there are respectful ways for the teams to present their cases in arbitration like using performance metrics that equate to value. Analytical data that is widely accepted. That said, I agree with ITalk that where the difference is relatively small between both sides then just give the damn player what he asked for to avoid damaging the relationship.
@JK45073 күн бұрын
ITalk - compensation for Year 4-6 (Arb 1 - 3) is so misunderstood. The owners & players agreed to this weird arbitration scheme. No one but agents & GMs are fully aware of all its implications. I told you already...kick ass in Year 3!
@edomarpez18402 күн бұрын
But if yrs 5 & 6 is only a multiplier of yr 4, then why do the teams need to argue and bring up points to pay less? If that's the case (it's only a multiplier of yr 4) then there should be no arbitrations from either side since the formula is already agreed upon
@JK45072 күн бұрын
@edomarpez1840 The player's salary for Year 4-6, the last 3 years of team control (Arb 1-3) are literally arbitrated (not calculated like Year 1-3, that's always minimum). That's what the player's union & owners agreed to. My point is that the Year 4 negotiated compensation is solely based on Year 3 performance. If you have a great Year 3, you maximize your earnings from Year 4 to Year 5 to Year 6 like Juan Soto ($17M, $23M $31M for Year 4-6). If Soto had a less than great Year 3, his last 3 years might have looked like this: $6M, $8M, $11M.

Red Sox owner is worth $6 billion. The Red Sox franchise value is $4.5 billion, while the its market value is a little over $2 billion. $500k for Duran is roughly Zero-point-two percent of the market value alone (basically a 5th of a single percentage point). What they're trying to stiff him out of can go into their market value over 4100 times. They wouldn't lose SH!T by paying him that money. It's just a power play designed to put a player in their "place." EDIT: For fun, the Red Sox's owner could pay 12,000 people $500k and still have a little bit left over to retire on.

My understanding for the squabbling over what is small amounts of money for these baseball teams/owners is that present income is a predictor for future income - by reducing the amount they pay the player in arbitration now they "could" save money in the future when it comes time to pay out that large contract. I don't agree with their process - I am personally affected by it (because most businesses in America run the same way and attempt to keep payroll low to bolster their profits on the backs of workers).

There is another reason as to why Kyle Tuckker hasn't received what he wants in arbitration. They could also be negotiating a long term contract extension. All team owners, and GM's have the opportunity to negotiate long term with their arbitration eligible players until the arbitration deadline. That's the entire reason of arbitration. The opportunity to keep a goood player for another season without paying the big dollers yet. Its also the main reason why players are pissed off when they dont receive what they want for that one year of service. Players who want to know if their future playing days are secure. When the team can't agree on a long term asking price, and then they want to be cheap on the 1 yr deal. That should piss off every player. Especially, when they deserve it. These players sacrifice damn near everything. Being with their families, their physical health because of the long season. It's ridiculous. Great video iTalk!

The 2 most awkward ones have to be the Angels with Luis Rengifo and the Dodgers with Alex Vesia. Rengifo asked for $5.95M and the team countered at $5.8M. You seriously can't bridge a gap of $150K, or about 20% of the league minimum? This is so laughable a difference in the great scheme of baseball salaries. And then the Dodgers -- the literal Dodgers, paying $700M for Ohtani -- and going to argue over $300K ($2.35M vs $2.05M) with Vesia, one of their best bullpen arms. Their payroll is just shy of $300 million, is it really worth the time and paperwork to fight over .1% of that?
@thecriticalthinker12 сағат бұрын
I'm not sure I agree with you on this. I get that players should be compensated for their talent but if teams just give players what they want, then every player is going to want an adjustment. Suddenly, 500k here, 250k there, adds up to an extra 20 to 30 mil that the team could have used on additional talent. Again, I'm not saying that players shouldn't be paid but that's what contracts are for. It's the player and his agent's responsibility to ensure that they get their market value when the time comes.

Just another day in FSG's stingy reign. As a fan of Liverpool Football Club who are owned by FSG, we see this every single time, every single season. Owners will simply not address the squad issues by recruitments. It is always penny pinching and the same old "we will wait for the right opportunity" crap we are fed. Yes the club improved drastically under their ownership in last 15yrs.. But we are a great team in 2024-25 needing *just* the push to be regular title winners. We are capable of that. Just address the contract situations of star players, 1 or 2 great signings, and we are there with the very best. But the stingy FSG is not doing it. So, as newbie baseball fan, I am not surprised that they are handling Duran like this. I am sorry guys, with Duran isn't getting the money he wants.. even if he asking for extra $10 💀
@Notalent13373 күн бұрын
So it's worth pointing out that the way Arbitration works, Arb 1 is by far the most important arbitration to fight. Duran getting 3.5 or 4 seems minor...and it is, but 3.5 means he'll probably get 9 on Arb 2 and 22-24 on Arb 3 if he doesn't get hurt at some point or regress, meanwhile 4 means he'll probably get 12 on arb 2 and 26-28 on arb 3. So they aren't fighting over half a million, their fighting over about 10 million. Honestly, even then I think it's stupid, if they intend to keep Duran for the long term, but I don't think they do. I think they're gonna trade Duran next year or maybe even this year if they get a good enough offer. Duran isn't in their window to compete.

I don’t think putting all the blame on teams is fair as they’re doing their best to value the player to the specific dollar (undervaluing is going to give you a better chance of losing and paying what the player submits so can really be counterintuitive) both parties prefer to avoid arbitration and teams offer contracts to avoid arbitration that are going to be the value that they submit. Arbitration also scales up in cost pretty aggressively so 500k Arb 1 might be the difference in millions by the time a player is set to be a free agent so “penny pinching” isn’t a fair description when they have a staff of people calculating what someone’s value is… maybe MLBPA can work out a deal where if the two offers are within 10% then the player wins by default and the arbitration process ends right there without the back and forth

Arb meetings arent that big of a deal most of the time. In a lot of arb meetings it has to do with players missing time because of injury or not playing enough over the course of the season. So take like Alex Vesia for example, the Dodgers want to pay him less because hes had availability issues same with Tucker who's injured a lot. Now some arb meetings are as you said, but the most of the meetings are down to missing time or not playing at the level they want to pay for, for a period of time. Some players get super hot near the end of the year, and then want a ton of arb money. The team then says, OK, what about the first half of the year? At the end of the day too, sometimes these players value themselves (rightfully so) higher than their value might be. Thats why arb exists. For Durant, I bet you, the Red Sox will say he diminished his value, and the value and integrity of the team because he said a homophobic slur. I get what you are saying but it comes across from someone who sounds like you don't understand how long term value effects business. Arb numbers will only go up from here, so of course a team wants to take advantage of getting a player at a value price. They can't just give into every demand because they the team loses all leverage. Arb is great because both sides get to argue their value when players don't have enough history to determine a long term value.

Duran had the most AB in the league and missed only 2 games because of conduct (calling someone a name). He should be paid reasonably not dimed a nickel.
@ooo_Kim_Chi_ooo2 күн бұрын
@@MeakH1 He also made a comment that went beyond baseball and potentially ruined his name and the Red Sox. There are repercussions to being a homophobe to fans and the Red Sox could contend in arb that his actions lowered his value and the potential value of the team.
@MeakH12 күн бұрын
@@ooo_Kim_Chi_ooo his comment boosted jersey sales. This didn't affect the Team by any chance (Other than losses and wins in the season). To which these games Duran missed is not enough to debate that the Team would make it to the playoffs or perform worse.

It's crazy to me how many ppl don't understand how the business end works. Arbitration, dfa's, free agency!
@JK45073 күн бұрын
There's a huge black hole of ignorance regarding arbitration. Year 3 performance determines Year 4 (Arb 1). Year 5 (Arb 2) can be 2x the comp of the previous year. Same for Year 6 (Arb 3). If you are an MLB player, just know this... Only Year 3 (not Year 1 or 2) dictates your compensation for Year 4-6.

What's the confusion here? Baseball is a business, simple as that. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about right or wrong here. Teams just don't want to give a player an extra 500k because there could potentially be two more years where that player would ask for more and more. If teams do give a player more money during their arbitration years, then his teammates would want to do the same. Players have the right to sign 10-15 yr contracts knowing they'll be complete garbage the last few years. Owners have the right to shortchange these young guys. If players want to change this system, owner might ask to put a max contract duration in the bargaining agreement in return. There is always going to be a give and take with the salary system.

Sure that's all fine and good but pissing off a really good player over a negligible amount of money relatively speaking makes no sense long term.
@noylakers9755Күн бұрын
@@tommyfu9271 You know of many stars not resign with their original team because he got screwed over 500k in arbitration? The vast majority accept that this is the system in place. They just let their agents handle it.

@@noylakers9755 hard to say exactly but something like pissing off Burns over 500k seems really short sited to me in the grand scheme of things. That's a rounding error these days.

Is this the same guy that made a slur to a fan? Or was that someone else? If players really did things that the team wants to bring up in arbitration they should. Everyone gets evaluated. Comes with every job. No one does everything perfectly. Foul Territory podcast talked about how the players Union sometimes wanting to go to arbitration to set a precedent for future players. Arbitration is not always a negative thing. It’s necessary.

@jdsthird3 күн бұрын
@ All I hear is an excuse. Doesn’t erase the slur. A 20 year old using a term that meant something else 70 years ago makes zero sense. He should just own it, apologize, take his medicine and move on. We don’t know if he’s used similar language around teammates. That would be handled in house not in the media and press. Let them handle their business. He will win or lose in arbitration and life goes on. Keep calm and carry on.
@joeblow51063 күн бұрын
Oh no a slur! Oh no. He should never work again.

@ Don’t be silly. He’s a big boy and can take his medicine. Stop treating him like some precious gem stone. He’s human. We all make mistakes and part of life is learning from them. All actions have consequences and the team can deal with it as they see fit. He’s fortunate to make millions playing baseball. Stop the drama. Life goes on. Keep calm and carry on.

If iTalk (sorry, dude, can't remember your name) is incredulous of the Red Sox being miserly with Jarren Duran, don't be. This is John Henry trying to be consistent with he who has become over the last half-dozen years. Scrooge McDuck clipping coupons out of the grocery ads in the paper, looking for nickels & dimes on the sidewalk as he walks down streets in his bathrobe. Or at least it feels that way. The 2nd Act of Henry's story has certainly been an interesting character arc. Though the Sox finally seemed to have cracked open the checkbook this off season (or at least fake it with some leaked stories), the Duran story sounds like John Henry suddenly remembered who he is. Good luck, Breslow.

It’s not really as simple as most fans think it is. If you give into a players want, you’re setting precedent not just for your club, but the whole league. Look at what happened this past year. Shohei just set a new standard for top player contracts, now Soto wants better. Would Soto have been asking for 700+ if Ohtani didn’t get it? Or would he be asking for higher than judges contract? Every contract for every player sets a precedent and every time an owner gives into a players demand, it affects every other club.
