If not for injuries Nomar definitely would been a hall of famer and no future Red Sox player would ever the number 5. I think nail in the coffin in his Red Sox tenure was the extra inning classic in 2004 when Jeter dove into the stands caught the foul ball while Nomar sat. The Nomar trade though shocking, that improved the team defense with Cabrera who has better range and Doug Mienkiewicz a gold glove 1st baseman.

Nomar had an incredible peak and was a very likeable personality. However, the image of him sulking on the Boston bench during one of the most memorable regular season Yankees/Red Sox games of all-time in 2004 while Jeter is making signature plays diving into the stands served as a symbolic fork in the road for both men.

I was on the left field line, close to the Green Monster, so I got a great look at it. He was definitely better than Jeter when he was healthy. It's such a shame that his wrist and other injuries derailed a surefire Hall of Fame career. Jeter was lucky he was only injured severely just once. He was also lucky to win 5 rings. He had a few great seasons. I think his .372 average in 2000 was the highest for a righty since Joe DiMaggio in 1939. Come to think of it, he was a very similar hitter to DiMaggio, for a few years. It’s too bad that he is remembered so much for the injuries, and for the trade that ended up spurring the Red Sox to glory in 2004. Orlando Cabrera ended up providing some needed spark to that team, along with the best shortstop defense the Sox have ever had. Great video. It really captures Nomar pretty well.

Don't forget Rico Petrocelli, who made a mark at shortstop for the Boston Red Sox in the 1960s. Petrocelli and Garciaparra had similar career arcs to a degree although Garciaparra was a far better hitter and won two AL batting title. Both, however, saw their prime-time careers end pretty early. I have a different view than I once had though on the topic of career length. When I see a top player who never had a prime year after his early 30s, I take that as proof that he was not cheating. Some have fallen over the cliff at 30. Youth ends. Don't blame the athlete for being mortal.

It's funny how you mention the Jeter defense controversy at the beginning. Know who Jeter-lite is? Correct. Jose Altuve. Well below average defense but makes the flashy plays, and can hit the ball.

In my honest opinion, Jeter is not the number one and I am not a Yankees fan at all and Garciapara would definitely be 1 I mean they were I think the two best shortstop I have ever seen play the game of baseball in my lifetime and I am 46 years old. I was a shortstop. I was a picture as well but those two guys did things that, I tried to mimic and do like they did but yeah that’s a hard one dude you this is a very good question. I love Nomar but I also love Jeter. It’s so hard to pick from those two. Very awesome video man very awesome video made me think made me think back to a lot of game a lot of special things they both did and I want to wish you a very merry Christmas to you and your family. God bless you guysand happy birthday Jesus

Don’t forget, Nomar destroyed a bunch of kids in backyard baseball 2003. Very impressive. Wasn’t league MVP though, that went to Pablo Sanchez.

You said 2009 was Jeters last good year? In 2012 he led the league in hits and batted .316. He was also an all star that year and got mvp votes. That was years after Nomar was off the field. Not sure how you overlooked the 2012 season.
